Supergirl, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: Supergirl (1984)

Genre: Science Fiction
Director: Jeannot Szwarc
Rating: Unrated
Length: 2h05
Video: Widescreen
Audio: English and French
Subtitles: English, French and Spanish

Stars:
Helen Slater
Faye Dunaway
Maureen Teefy
Peter Cook
Hart Bochner

Plot:
Strength, flight, invincibility, heat vision, an unswerving sense of justice: they're all family traits. Kara, 'Superman''s cousin, also survived the cataclysm that destroyed their homeworld of 'Krypton'. And when she comes to Earth, she's 'Supergirl'!

Creative forces behind 'Superman The Movie' take another page from DC Comics lore with this fun-and effects-packed adventure about the 'Girl of Steel'. Helen Slater plays the title role, posing as Midvale prep-schooler 'Linda Lee', battling a sorceress (Faye Dunaway) for control of an alien power orb and enjoying an unexpected dating ritual called kissing. Peter O'Toole and Mia Farrow add more starpower to the ultrapowered excitement. All you in Midvale and beyond, have no fear: 'Supergirl' is here!

My Thoughts:
Pete had never reviewed this one and I've decided to do it myself. Evidently it doesn't really fit in neither of my 2 reviews topics so I've decided to place it here.

For me a super hero doesn't need to be completly serious and depressing (that's why I've no intention to watch the recent Batman). OK I want to have a little seriousness, but I want to have some enjoyment out of it. This one was not really a big hit since it cames just after the awfull piece of crap that was (and will always be) Superman 3. This kind of sad since this was the best thing in this franchise after the original (sorry but Superman 2 is bad, at least the theatrical version). I agree the vilain is cartoonish, but common it's Faye Dunaway so who cares (at 43 she was always great to look at). Talking of great to look at, Helen Slater what a great discovery from this movie. She can act and she sure look good (the outfit looks certainly better on her than on Christopher Reeves), too bad that she doesn't had a better career because this movie was a box office failure. Even Maureen Teefy an actress that I like was in this and for one time she doesn't sing (her singing voice is awfull). Peter O'Toole is good too in his little role. For the rest of the cast nothing really impressive and a lot of waste talent.

Maybe it's a little silly film, but it doesn't make a joke of the Superman franchise like all the others after the original. I don't count Superman Return that wasn't a joke but a whining boringfest.

I've watched the international version, I sure will like to watch the director cut but the Anchor Bay dvd is OOP since a long time...

Dave, a review by DJ Doena

January, 13th

Director: Ivan Reitman

Kevin Kline    ...    Dave Kovic / Bill Mitchell
Sigourney Weaver   ...    Ellen Mitchell
Frank Langella   ...    Bob Alexander
Kevin Dunn   ...    Alan Reed
Ving Rhames   ...    Duane Stevenson
Ben Kingsley   ...    Vice-President Nance
Charles Grodin   ...    Murray Blum

Synopsis: Dave Kovic is a simple man who works in an agency that gives people jobs. But he also looks exactly like the President of the United States. One day the Secret Service hires him for a public appearance because the real President Bill Mitchell has "more important" things to do. But when Mitchell falls into a coma due to a stroke the chief advisor Bob Alexander engages Dave to play the President for real.

My Opinion: This is a great fun flick about American politics with all its aspects (like the budget, running campaigns and so on) and Dave pretending to be the President and getting used to the job. I liked all the characters in their roles, from the First Lady to the bodyguard and of course the villain of the piece - Bob Alexander (Skeletor in Masters of the Universe) but the scenes between Dave and Ellen I like the most because then it shows how different a man Dave is from Bill.

01. When She Was Bad (1997-09-15)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Joss Whedon (Writer)
Director: Joss Whedon
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), David Boreanaz (Angel), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Kristine Sutherland (Joyce Summers), Robia La Morte (Jenny Calendar), Andrew J. Ferchland (The Anointed One), Dean Butler (Hank Summers), Brent Jennings (Absalom), Armin Shimerman (Principal Snyder), Tamara Brown (Tara)

In my opinion one of the weakest Buffy episodes. Highlight is the first scene with the almost kiss between Willow and Xander. Buffy behaves like a bitca without a real reason. So she feels down because of the Master. I can understand that she's depressed, but is that a reason for her behaviour in this episode? Sadly this trend continues in later seasons.

02. Some Assembly Required (1997-09-22)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Ty King (Writer)
Director: Bruce Seth Green
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), David Boreanaz (Angel), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Robia La Morte (Jenny Calendar), Angelo Spizirri (Chris Epps), Michael Bacall (Eric), Ingo Neuhaus (Daryl Epps), Melanie MacQueen (Mrs. Epps), Amanda Wilmshurst (Cheerleader)

Probably the low point of Buffy. After this episode the real fun begins. But this episode is just stupid.
The only good thing is Giles trying to ask out Jenny Calendar and their date later on.
Best line: (Angel to Buffy) "I saw fire and I thought you were here"
