Scream 2, a review by samuelrichardscott

Scream 2 (1997) R2 United Kingdom

Overview:
Master director Wes Craven (Scream, Wishmaster) once again teams up with Kevin Williamson (writer of Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer) in this hip, fun and relentlessly scary follow-up to the hit thriller Scream!  Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell - Scream, The Craft) thought she had put the shocking Woodsboro murders behind her...until crazed copycat killer begins acting out a chilling, real-life horror sequel on her college campus!  As the bodies begin to pile up, ambitious reporter Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox - Scream, Ace Venture: Pet Detective, TV's Friends), deputy Dewey (David Arquette - Scream, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and other Woodsboro survivors find themselves trapped in an all-new nightmare where no one is safe - or above suspicion.
Even more terrifying and twistedly funny than the original, SCREAM 2 again defies the rules and delivers heartstopping surprises...giving you more of what made you scream in the first place!

My Thoughts:
The inevitable sequel to the fantastic first movie has survivor Sidney Prescott going to college where it appears a copycat killer is out to get her and her new friends all over again. Following what is essentially the same method, Scream 2 follows the 'genre' rules without as much parody and with a less witty, intelligent script. Don't get me wrong, the jokes are there, but haven't been added anywhere near as smoothly. Still, it moves along at a nice pace and again, has a better cast than your typical horror with Neve Campbell, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Heather Graham, Jada Pinkett and the Cox's. The movie is above average and is definately worthy of a place on the shelf along with the first, but expect something that is more faithful to slasher's without the cleverness. 3.5/5

My Thoughts:

Not bad although I wasn't stuck on Sting's performance as Dr. Frankenstein. He wasn't nearly brash or bold enough for a man with a God complex. Jennifer Beals was ok as The Bride although I found her inexplicably creepy.  :-\

I thought the much better sub-plot was the adventures of Victor the monster excellently played by Clancy Brown and his diminutive friend Rinaldo the circus midget. Their steadfast friendship in a cruel world was uplifting.

Cary Ewles makes an appearance as the prissy, pretty boy like he has in so many other movies. I was so glad to see him cut off his own leg in Saw.

This is a below average foray into the Frankenstein world as far as I'm concerned.

Plot:
Love is not a spectator sport.

High school is a hectic time of change for most... But for happy-go-lucky Yamato, it's gonna be a complete revolution! He's the new kid in class, having transferred to the big city to attend Aoba High, where he finds himself smitten with the local rising star of track and field. Yet two people could not be more different! And as Suzuka remains completely uninspired by Yamato's cheerfully irresponsible nature, things progress from bad to worse with record-breaking speed! So when the young man decides to step up his efforts and join the track team, his best might not measure up...

It's mixed signals and high school hormones with everyone running in circles! Throw in the antics of a handful of high school stereotypes, and Yamato's completely out of his league! When love is not a spectator sport, the only question is who will go the distance?

I have enjoyed watching this series. So much so, that I also read the manga. At least as far it was released in the English translation. They stopped releasing them shortly before the series was finished :(
