Rambo III, a review by Jon

Rambo 3 **
2 out of 5

As a straightforward action movie, they don't come much more fun that Rambo 3. The octane level is definitely set to high and his ruthless despatching of Rushkies is thrilling stuff. But it's all bollocks.

First Blood had a point, something to say. The sequel had more fun, was largely unnecessary, but held onto some dignity. Here, he is a full blown cartoon character. He's still beating up Russians, continuing from the previous outing, so at least there's half an idea continuing the thread and providing a link into someone else's war. It's all tenuous though and then goes completely OTT where he seemingly faces off against an entire battalion.

Good job the Taliban are there to help him.

Yes, it's also a bit dated due to current events. It hardly matters actually, but when the movie is already not very good, it's fun to be picky! I can recommend this as a double-bill with Charlie Wilson's War...

Elizabeth: The Golden Age, a review by goodguy

Elizabeth: The Golden Age (UK 2007)
Written by: William Nicholson, Michael Hirst
Directed by: Shekhar Kapur
Starring: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Clive Owen, Abbie Cornish, Samantha Morton
DVD: R2-DE Universal (2008)

My rating:

For the most part, the sequel has the same visual splendor as the first movie, but it is less balanced in both storytelling and direction. Too much melodrama, too Braveheart-y battlefield speeches, some superfluous action scenes. But even when Kapur missteps, he still manages to dazzle, as in the underwater shots of the burning Spanish Armada.

Cate Blanchett was a promising talent when the first movie was made and an established star at the time of the second one, which actually is befitting for her role. Clive Owen as Raleigh is solid as always and Abbie Cornish adorable. And kudos to Samantha Morton, who as Maria Stuart has only a few scenes, but what a powerful performance.

Bottom line: While not as great the first one, this is still a very enjoyable movie, well worth watching.

The X-Files Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

The X-Files: Season 1

4. Conduit
Original Air Date: October 1, 1993
When a young Iowa girl mysteriously vanishes without a trace, Mulder must confront his own feelings about his sister Samantha's dissapearance.

Guest Stars:
Carrie Snodgress as Darlene Morris
Michael Cavanaugh as Sheriff
Don Gibb as Kip
Joel Palmer as Kevin Morris
Charles Cioffi as Chief Blevins

My Thoughts:
After an excellent episode we are back to the whole UFO thing.  Though it is a good story... I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as Squeeze. Though I must admit... I did like how they did the effects in this movie. I liked how they did the biker/bartender's mutilated ear.

My Rating:
