The Three Stooges Collection: 1934-1936, a review by Antares

The Three Stooges Collection: 1934-1936

Year: 1934

Curly Howard (1903) as Curly

ReviewThe Three Stooges Collection: Volume One - 1934-1936Woman Haters, which was completely done in song and barely resembles anything familiar to most fans. It was in their second feature, Punch DrunksHoi Polloi, Pardon My Scotch, Disorder in the Court and Three Little Beers are just a few of the classics that Sony has painstakingly re-mastered for this release. For years, fans have had to deal with DVD versions culled from the public domain or copied from VHS transfers, each of which were loaded with grain, splits and damage. Now, for the first time since their original film releases, they can be viewed in the almost pristine presentation that greeted moviegoers during the Depression. I urge anyone who loves the Stooges to rush out and buy this DVD set.

Plot:
In 1963 in Yokohama, Umi is a 16 year old high school girl and lives in a house located on a hill overlooking the harbour. Every morning she raises a signal flag which is "a pray for everybody to get a safe trip" as her father died on his ship during the Korean war. Meanwhile the entire nation is going through a transformation to ready itself for the approaching Tokyo Olympic Games, and old buildings are being destroyed for new ones. The old crumbling Culture Club "Quartier Latin" building inside Umi's high school is also about to be swept over by the transformation. Shun is one of student leaders trying to protect the beloved building and they garner enthusiastic support from students. Then as Umi suggests, they begin their opposition by cleaning up the place. But this "clean up" will go further than they think...

My Thoughts:

A gentle romance film. Set in 1963 Umi lives in Yokohama but everywhere is getting ready for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Part of this preparation is the replacement of old and decrepit buildings with new up-to-date facilities. One of the buildings marked for demolition is the the Student Room at Umi's high school. A group of student leaders are trying to get the building saved and Umi gets involved with the activities after Shun, one of the student leaders, gets photographed with her. They progress trying to save the building and also start a budding romance. However the romance is halted with a twist in the relationship.

Rating:  I enjoyed this romance and give it a

"Due South" marathon, a review by RossRoy

Here is what I watched today:

Pilot Movie
Great start to the series. Establishes the Fraser/Vecchio dynamics quickly, and they hit it off well in terms of chemistry. The story is good too.

Free Willie
Good first actual episode. A few nice jokes (especially those about the color of Canadian money) and a good story.

Diefenbaker's Day Off
Great episode, I loved it. Nice little heartwarming story. Still wonder why they had the dog's name in the title when he had so little to do though.

Manhunt
Leslie Nielsen's in it! What more could you ask for? Granted it's in a more serious role, but he still manages to get a some laughs, and I always like it when they take funny actors and place them in serious roles.

They Eat Horses, Don't They?
Another solid episode if you ask me. Nice, if a little gross, story. And Vecchio's sister is back!

Pizzas and Promies
What a treat! Vecchio's sister is back for a second episode in a row! Unfortunately, I found this episode to be really slow to pick up. Once they get to the car dealership, the story picks up and gets better, but the beginning of the episode is rather dull. I give this a 4 because of Ramona Milano, else it'd be a 3.
