My Thoughts:

Thought I would check out Edge Of Darkness which is Mel Gibson's latest and it has been a long time coming. Mel is violent, profane, abusive, says exactly what's on his mind.... all that and the movie hasn't even started!

Jokes aside, in spite of all his troubles in the tabloids, Mel can still act and very much commands presence on screen. He is starting to show the wear and tear of life with stark, craggy features that suited him perfectly for this role as a grieving father who is investigating the murder of his daughter in a nothing to lose fashion.

This was riveting and despite how long Gibson had been out of the game he can still cut the mustard in action/thriller roles. Several WOW moments and constant thrills that hurtle you towards a traumatic ending make this a great watch. Ray Winstone was also great as the dapper 'fixer' whose own ironic dilemma makes his end move so poetic.

Gibson's still got it. I'd love to see more movies out of him. Even more so I'd like to see some more directorial efforts from him. C'mon Mel... get your shit together...  :drunk:

The Grapes Of Wrath, a review by KinkyCyborg

The Grapes Of Wrath

My Thoughts:

Screen adaptation of the classic John Steinbeck novel. The movie is a classic as well.

Telling the story of desolate sharecroppers in the dustbowl of Oklahoma who set out for California with the promise of work and better times. Upon reaching the land of 'milk and honey' they quickly and painfully discover that the milk is sour and the honeypot is full of flies. :(

This is a powerful movie of extremes. We see both the worst of inhumanity in people and the pinnacle of compassion in others.

A very young, gangly Henry Fonda play the contemptuous Tom Joad, a man who can barely contain his rage at the cruelty and hardships he and his family must endure. His performance was excellent but as good as he was the true star of this film was Jane Darwell as Ma Joad, the pure embodiment of hope and spirit... she's the glue that keeps the family together and keeps them going. Her closing words to end the film were truly inspirational and she was most deserving of the Best Supporting Actress Oscar she received in 1940 for this role.

For any man, woman or child who has ever bitched and complained about how hard they have it... they should watch this movie.

My PILOT Marathon, a review by Rich

Title: New Tricks: Series 1

Certificate:M
Year:2003

Plot:Superintendent Sandra Pullman, whose brilliant career is sidelined after a hostage rescue goes disastrously wrong ("you shoot one dog...") has been put in charge of a new department - The Unsolved Crime and Open Case Squad (UCOS). However she is soon dismayed to discover that her unit is to be manned by former detectives who have long since hung up their badges.
Pullman's recruits - grieving widower Jack Halford, once her mentor in the murder squad; the compulsive obsessive ex-Inspector Brian Lane and ex-Sergeant Gerry Standing, one of the top thief-takers of his time, who left the force amid rumours of corruption - might have years of experience, but they know little of modern police methods. Can she create a crack team out of this trio of eccentric dinosaurs who are quickly discovering the rules of the game are no longer what they used to be?

Pilot
When Roddy Wringer is released on appeal after serving twenty years for the murder of a nightclub hostess - a crime he always claimed he did not commit - his case gets reinvestigated by UCOS - The Unsolved case squad. The squad is to be made up of some of the best retired officers available
The squad gets headed up by Det Supt Pullman, who is moved after shooting a dog in a hostage rescue gone wrong. With Jack Halford she sets out to build her team and investigate the case.

My Review:
New Tricks began as a one-off episode, first shown in March 2003, which gained enough viewers for a series.

The best way to finish this months pilot marathon, the best of the best saved til last.
