From acclaimed director Guillermo del Toro '(Blade II, Hellboy)' comes "one of the most exciting and visually impressive adult-audience fables since 'The Lord of the Rings' movies" (Richard Roeper, 'Ebert & Roeper'). Following a bloody civil war, young Ofelia enters a world of unimaginable cruelty when she moves in with her new stepfather, a tyrannical military officer. Armed only with her imagination, Ofelia discovers a mysterious labyrinth and meets a faun who sets her on a path to saving herself and her ailing mother. Soon, the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur, and before Ofelia can turn back, she finds herself at the center of the ferocious battle between Good and Evil.

My Thoughts:

While I knew this wasn't a kid's fairy tale I wasn't prepared for the brutality of this movie.... (great use of a wine flask when the Captain bashed in that kid's face!!)

Wonderful imagination and a bizarre cast of curious creatures! The integration of fantasy and war was nicely done although I was left somewhat bewildered at the end. Was it real? Or was it a world she created to escape the horrors around her? Leaving it for the viewer to decide is what makes this movie great.

Return of the Living Dead, a review by addicted2dvd

Title: Return of the Living Dead
Movie Count: 78
TV Ep Count: 38
Other  Count: 2
Time Started: 12:30pm
Plot:
On his first day on the job at an army surplus store, poor Freddy unwittingly releases nerve gas from a secret U.S. military canister, unleashing an unbelievable terror. The gas re-animates an army of corpses, who arise from their graves with a ravenous hunger...for human brains! And luckily for those carnivorous cadavers, there is a group of partying teens nearby, just waiting to be eaten!

My Thoughts:
This is one I enjoy... a good combination of horror and comedy. I really liked Linnea Quigley's character in this one. And thought it was a nice touch that they made it so her worse fear is realized in this movie. I just find this to be a fun movie all around.

My Rating

Doctor Who Marathon, a review by DJ Doena

Season 1

Rose

Synopsis: Spearhead from Space. Even back then the NC used window dummies, the Autons.

My Opinion: I don't really remember what I thought about all this when I first watched it but I am a fan of Farscape as well, so wacky sci-fi doesn't bother me.
Upon rewatch I still like the episode, it's a good (re)pilot. The characters are very well introduced (except maybe for Mickey) and can portray both the seriousness as well as the humour ("There's a strange man in my bed").

My guess is that Mickey was supposed to be a one-off character who was supposed to show why it was easy for Rose to leave it all behind and start travelling with the Doctor. Well, he grew out of it.

While I was slightly familiar with Eccleston (he played the invisible man on Heroes' first season) the only person I truly knew was Rose's mum (Camille Coduri) because she played John Goodman's love interest in a guilty pleasure favourite of mine: King Ralph (also starring: Peter O'Toole, John Hurt and Richard Griffiths).

In hindsight and through knowing more about Doctor Who as a show I love how they mix modern CGI special effects with their classic foes like the ridiculously looking Autons.
