The Last Unicorn, a review by Danae Cassandra

The Last Unicorn
Year of Release: 1982
Directed By: Jules Bass, Arthur Rankin Jr.
Starring: Alan Arkin, Jeff Bridges, Mia Farrow, Tammy Grimes, Robert Klein, Angela Lansbury, Christopher Lee
Genre: Fantasy, Musical, Animation

Overview:The Last Unicorn will reignite the hearts of its fans and entrance all who enter.

My Thoughts:
I adore this film. I've loved it since I first saw it as a child and I love it still. Yes, there is a certain nostalgia factor to this, but there are things we love as children that don't hold up as adults (the Dungeons and Dragons cartoon comes to mind). This does. It speaks to me now just as much as it did in the 80's. It has wonderful songs provided by America, and characters that are unique. I love both the tragic love story, and the one that isn't ... and that those who end happily aren't the beautiful people. It's a story of love, heroism, selfishness and sacrifice. It's also pretty true to Beagle's book, which I would highly recommend as well.

For me, this is a nigh-perfect film, and a long-time personal favorite.  I know it isn't truly a 5-star film, but I don't see it as anything less.

Bechdel Test: Pass
Mako Mori Test: Pass

Overall: 5/5

Prometheus, a review by Dragonfire

Prometheus

Once I started to see trailers for Prometheus, I became interested in seeing the movie.  I heard that it was a prequel to Alien, and then that it wasn't really a prequel, but it takes place in the same universe.  I finally watched Alien for the first time the night before I saw this one.  I saw definite connections between the movies.

Two scientists, Elizabeth and Charlie, discover a cave painting.  Four years later, they are part of the crew of a space ship traveling to a distant planet where they hope to find answers about the creation of man.  When they reach their destination, a team goes out to explore a structure.  What they discover raises more questions and puts them in incredible danger.

I saw the movie in 3D because of the start times.  It was fine, but I don't think it was really necessary.

The Weyland Corporation is funding the trip, and there could be ulterior motives.  The ship, the Prometheus, looks more advanced than the ship in Alien in some ways, like in the bridge.  Other areas of the ship, like the dining area and air lock, look similar to the other ship.  Things in the structure resemble things from the first movie.  It seem clear to me that a few things are the same, creating a connection between the movies.  Things get resolved by the end of the movie while also leaving a few things open for the possibility of another movie.  There is violence in some scenes, and some disturbing things as well.  The movie wasn't as violent as I had thought it would be before seeing it though.  There is some tension to certain scenes and horror elements without it being a full on horror movie.  I think it works well and is a very good, entertaining movie, though some people may not think there are enough connections to Alien.  The effects are very well done, and give the movie an amazing look.

The characters are interesting, though some aren't developed that much.  Meredith is a representative of Weyland, along to make sure things go according to plan.  She is a bit cold and detached, and she tends to sort of lurk around.  Charlize Theron is good in the part.  Elizabeth is a strong, determined woman.  In some ways, she does remind me of Ripley, though the two aren't the same character.  There are some definite differences.  I think Elizabeth makes a good main character.

This is a very well done movie that is very entertaining. I'm glad I decided to see it, and that I watched Alien before it.  The movie is definitely worth seeing.

I did post a longer review at Epinions.

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

12. The Eyes Have It (2/5/95)
Flying blind. A sceming optometrist develops an ultraviolet-ray device that renders Superman sightless. Then Lois is kidnapped - and Superman feels powerless to help her.

My Thoughts:
This is a good episode. They made it entertaining to watch a blind Superman.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

13. The Phoenix (2/12/95)
With a little help from his friends, Lex Luthor returns from the dead. But he wants more than just life, much more - wealth, power and former bride-to-be Lois Lane.

My thoughts:
The return of Lex Luthor. This is also the (I believe) final episode that has Denise Crosby as a guest star... playing Luthor's doctor. An episode I enjoyed.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

14. Top Copy (2/19/95)
"Clark Kent is Superman!" A hotshot television journalist, who's also an assassin for Intergang, discovers Clark's secret identity...and reveals it on nationwide TV.

My Thoughts:
This is a very good episode that guest stars Racquel Welch as the reporter that discover's that Clark is Superman. Lois and Clark is still dancing around whether or not they should take their relation to the next level. I forgot how long it took for those 2 to get together. And that isn't even including the troubles they had getting to their wedding.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

15. Return of the Prankster (2/28/95)
The Prankster and the president. Armed with a ray that temporarily freezes people, the Prankster breaks out of jail. His diabolical goal: kidnap the president and hold him for ransom.

My Thoughts:
Bronson Pinchot is back as the Prankster. This is another fun episode. Looked like a lot of fun to me... being able to freeze people and then manipulate them anyway you wish. Once again Bronson Pinchot was great as the prankster.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5
