Foreign Correspondent, a review by AntaresForeign Correspondent (1940) 3/5 - This is a strange little film from Hitchcock, as it appears like he's trying too hard to please an American audience, in this, his first American made film. There are moments that are inspired, the umbrella chase, the scene inside the windmill and the survivors of the crash floating on the wing in the middle of the Atlantic, but there are also very cringe inducing moments too. The instant love affair and marriage proposal between the two stars of the film, the scene outside the windmill when they lose the car they are chasing and the countless attempts at humor that come and go. Hitchcock, to me, always struggled with comedy in his films. A bit too much of the wink-wink, aren't I cheeky kind of stuff that when you get right down to it, isn't funny. I watched this on TCM and before the film started, Robert Osborne was saying how this film has kind of been forgotten because of the success of Rebecca, which was released the same year. When the film was finished, I felt that it's been forgotten because it's a film that misfires repeatedly. Just as it seems to be running on all cylinders, some small thing occurs that just doesn't work and it stalls the film for a few seconds. It's not a bad film, but it's something I wouldn't make plans to watch again. Based on a true story, colorfully reported in a British newspaper at the time, this sex film is now highly regarded and can be seen as a true reflectionof the change in moral standarts that arrived with the seventies. My Thoughts: As written in the synopsis this is the story of two teenagers from the british countryside seeking adventure in the big city. Carol won a beauty contest and count on this fact to succeed in London. Obviously things do not go as planned when they find themselves empty handed. The synopsis suggests that it is a drama with a "writing for television" vibes, although this is not the case and the whole is rather amusing due to the naivety of the two protagonists. Robin Askwith gives the kind of performance you expect from him (if you enjoyed the Confessions of ... serie you will also appreciate him here). Janet Lynn is excellent in the title role, she plays the naive unashamed young girl in a perfectly credible way. This film has its share of nudity (as usual Robin Askwith presents his backside, which is always interesting for the ladies) which is not a surprise ... the contrary would have been. The story don't go in the direction that one might think and our players will do pretty well instead. My Thoughts: After the pilot I was not sure if this series will get above an okay series for me. As a matter of fact it took the whole first disc to convince me otherwise. But after the first few episodes I was hooked. I like how they integrate the music into the storylines. And I like the music choices for the most part. Also Jane Lynch is playing a great nemesis for the glee club as the coach of the chearleading team. I couldn't resist ordering the second season now, even though I usually wait until the price drops to about half of what it currently is. It's great that the Blu-ray has on each disc direct access to the songs (even with a play all feature).
