Meet the Parents, a review by samuelrichardscottMeet the Parents (2000) R2 United Kingdom Overview: Male nurse Greg Focker ('Ben Stiller') is poised to propose to his girlfriend Pam ('Teri Polo') during a weekend stay at her parents' home. But here's the catch...he needs to ask her father first. Alas, the fur flies as Jack Byrnes, Pam's cat-crazy, ex-CIA father, played hysterically by Academy Award winner Robert DeNiro, takes an immediate dislike to her less-than truthful beau. Greg's quest for approval gets seriously sidetracked as Murphy's Law takes over and a hilarious string of mishaps turns him into a master of disaster and total pariah in the eyes of the entire family... all except for his shell-shocked girlfriend, who can't believe she still loves her one-man wrecking crew. 'Meet the Parents', from the director of 'Austin Powers', is an uproarious blockbuster hit that bombards you with one laugh after another, as true love tries to conquer all, against all odds. My Thoughts: Ben Stiller? Great comedic actor. Robert De Niro? Legend. Teri Polo and Blythe Danner? Underrated and underused actresses. Meet the Parents? Enjoyable but overrated comedy from Jay Roach. I like all the cast involved with this movie and it did make me laugh a few times. Unfortunately, it only made me laugh out loud once and that was De Niro's "I have nipples Greg, can you milk me?" line. Don't get me wrong, it's an enjoyable film with plenty of reasonably funny moments but I can't help that with these comedic roles, De Niro has turned into a parody of his former self. I just am not that big a fan of him in this at all. Still, the movie is worth picking up, just don't believe the hype. 3/5 (From Never Ending Movie Marathon (short reviews) on June 21st, 2010) I Walked with a Zombie, a review by addicted2dvdTitle: I Walked with a Zombie Year: 1943 Director: Jacques Tourneur Rating: NR Length: 69 Min. Video: Full Frame 1.33:1 Audio: English: Dolby Digital Mono Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Stars: James Ellison Frances Dee Tom Conway Edith Barrett James Bell Plot: Take the gothic romance of Jane Eyre, reset it in the West Indies, add the direction of Jacques Tourneur (Cat People) and the overriding terror of the living dead and you have I Walked with a Zombie. Frances Dee plays the nurse who witnesses the strange power of voodoo. Extras: Scene Access Audio Commentary Trailers Closed Captioned My Thoughts: Another movie from my Val Lewton Horror Collection. Still being fairly new to the classic horrors I am still not used to the original style of zombies. When I think zombies I still think of the zombies that George Romero made so famous. That being said... I still enjoyed this movie... very much so. It has great atmosphere. I enjoyed the woman that played the nurse in this movie... Frances Dee. Checking DVD Profiler I find this is the only movie I have with her in it. Now with only 2 more movies (and 2 documentaries) left to watch in this set. I must say that the Val Lewton Horror Collection is shaping up to being my favorite purchase of this past year. Movie wise at least. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From Weekend Movie Marathon: Horror on December 27th, 2009) The One Where It All Began: The Pilot Marathon, a review by DJ DoenaWhat's the show about? Dr. House leads a team of diagnosticians who have specialized in rare and/or extraordinary cases. House himself is a misanthropic cripple who doesn't like to handle the patients personally, basically because "everybody lies". He bounces ideas off his team and together they find the disease but not always fast enough to actually save the patient. "Pilot" A young kindergarten teacher is brought to the hospital because she has lost the ability to speak and five different doctors have made five different diagnoses based on the same evidence. House's friend Dr. Wilson tricks House into accepting this patient and he and his team try to diagnose her illness. And the hospital boss Dr. Cuddy forces House to do clinic hours, too. My Opinion It's not lupus. Whatever it is, it's never lupus. The case of the week follows a fairly regular pattern. Patient comes in, something makes it interesting for House, they treat, they mistreat, they treat again, they nearly kill the patient and then something totally unrelated to the case gives House the solution. Case closed, patient (maybe still) alive. For me that's not the reason to watch this show. For me it's about House himself and his friend Wilson and Cuddy and his three doctors and how they interact and what they do besides treating the patient. And even though the case always follows the same pattern, the position of the players (even House's) is constantly changing and will change again when the show goes into its sixth season this fall.
