The Adventures of Robin Hood, a review by Dragonfire

The Adventures of Robin Hood

My Thoughts

Since I have enjoyed the other Robin Hood movies that I've seen, and I read some good things about this one, I decided to go ahead and pick it up when I saw the Blu-ray for $10.  I'm really glad I decided to get it.

The basic story is the same some of the other Robin Hood movies I've seen, though there are differences.  There is no mention of Robin going off to fight in the Crusades.  He decides to stand up for the people that Prince John is attempting to oppress.  Maid Marian travels to Nottingham with Prince John and it seems like she is supporting him at least for a while.  She clearly doesn't approve of Robin and seems to look down on the people that Prince John is treating so badly.  The Sheriff of Nottingham is around, though he doesn't do as much in this version.  A bigger villain is Sir Guy Gisbourne, a nobleman living in Nottingham who supports Prince John.  I don't remember that character being in the other versions I've seen, but I could be remembering wrong.

There is a good amount of action to the movie with Robin using his bow and arrow several times and getting into sword fights.  The fight scenes are done well and look good.  Some of the action looks speeding up a little bit, which makes those scenes look a little odd, but they are still very entertaining.  The look of the movie makes it clear it is an older movie, but it has held up well.  The costumes for Robin and his men are kind of silly, especially with the bright colors.  It seems like those bright colors - especially the red that Will Scarlett wears - would make it harder for them to hide in Sherwood Forest.  Some aspects of the plot are a bit serious and other things are more silly, like how Robin and the men who follow him interact with each other.  They have a tendency to start laughing at stuff that really isn't that funny at times.

The relationship is there between Maid Marian and Robin, though there isn't a lot of attention given to it.  He seems more interested at first while she clearly looks down on him.  After she spends a short amount of time with him, she changes her mind about him and it isn't long after that before she decides she is in love with him.  The two of them are shown kissing once or twice and that is it.

The characters are fine, though some of them are under developed.  Most of Robin's men are just sort of there without anything specific being shared about them.  Robin is pretty much the same as he is in other versions, though a bit more light hearted.  That makes sense since the movie is more light hearted overall.  The cast all does well with their parts.

The picture quality is wonderful and the colors look amazing.  The Blu-ray has a lot of extras on it, including a Bugs Bunny and a Daffy Duck cartoon tied to Robin Hood.  I still haven't watched all of them.  The extras I did watch are interesting.

Overall I really enjoyed this movie and am glad that I decided to add this version to my movie collection.

Springtime in the Rockies, a review by Danae Cassandra

Springtime in the Rockies
Year of Release: 1937
Directed By: Joseph Kane
Starring: Gene Autry, Smiley Burnette, Polly Rowles
Genre: Western, Musical

Overview:
Ranch owner Sandra, fresh from animal husbandry school, brings a flock of sheep into cattle country. The local ranchers don't like it, and ranch foreman Gene must deal with it.

My Thoughts:
Not completely terrible, but this film sure is sexist.  Gene and the other ranchers sure know better than those educated women from out east.  Those gals will fall for anything and forgive the men for treating them like little twits.  After all, Gene sure is handsome and romantic.

Still, like I said, it's not a completely terrible B-western.  It's short, the plot moves along briskly, and Gene sings several times.  Only recommended though, if you appreciate westerns of this age and type.

I watched this on YouTube, where the whole film is available free.

Bechdel Test: Pass
Mako Mori Test: Fail

Overall: 2/5

Ghost Whisperer Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Disc 5:

17. The Walk In
The corpse of a former high school quarterback is possessed by another ghost, a wheel-chair bound boy who wants topass as a popular kid at their reunion

My Thoughts:
This was a fun episode. A ghost taken over a dead body... giving us a zombie. A really interesting concept.

18. Children of Ghosts
Melinda turns to a dog whisperer for help when Homer the dog returns. And a teenage girl haunted by a threatening spirit comes to stay with Melinda and Jim.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode. The girl's life is really turned upside down when she finds out the truth about herself. I couldn't imagine having to go through something like that.

19. Delia's First Ghost
As Delia starts dating other men, her son Ned is haunted by a ghost, but Melinda's not sure how to handle the situation without telling Delia about her abilities.

My Thoughts:
This is a pretty good episode... although a bit on the standard side. It was about time Melinda would have to tell Delia about herself.... at least this time they mixed up how she took the info. It took longer then normal for acceptance.

Disc 6:

20. The Collector
Melinda meets Gabriel, a man with similar abilities. and discovers his connection to Professor Payne's wife.Later, she learns he has a different plan for the dead.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode... by here we are really getting to the meat of the season long arc. I really like how they showed how someone could take advantage of having an ability like Melinda has. Made for an interesting episode.

21. The Prophet
A Prophet Ghost shows visions of disaster to Melinda, who grows concerned for Delia's safety. And Melinda's fellow Ghost Whisperer is back.

My Thoughts:
The first part of the two part season finale. Definitely enjoyed it... but it wasn't spectacular. Possibly because it was only the first half of the story.

22. The Gathering
Melinda and Professor Payne desperately try to figure out the mythological clues left by the Prophet Ghost, who predicted that the spirit world is getting stronger.

My Thoughts:
Definitely the better half of the season finale. Even though I have seen these episodes before (twice before to be exact)... I still felt the excitement of the ending of this season.

Over-All Season 2 Thoughts:
Really a good season of Ghost Whisperer. This season is a bit darker then the first... which heightened the enjoyment for me over-all. But as good as I felt this season ended. I thought the first season had the stronger season finale. And that is saying something as I really enjoyed this one.

Well... that brings my Ghost Whisperer marathon to an end... as the third season is not on DVD yet. I do look forward to getting it when it does come out though.
