The Ghostdancers, a review by addicted2dvd

Weekend Movie Marathon
Ghosts/Hauntings
Anything to do with ghosts/hauntings is probably my second favorite horror sub-genre. This type of movie is great to watch alone in a dark room... and if you are really lucky there will be a storm outside. This weekend I decided to watch...

The Ghostdancers: After Dark Horrorfest
After a drunken night of dancing on graves, a group of friends are haunted by three havoc-minded ghosts bent on revenge.

My Thoughts:
After the initial scene's action the story slowed down quite a bit till the scene in the graveyard where they dance on the graves.  But once that scene was done the movie definitely picked up! I feel that this is a very good ghost story. I wouldn't say the best I ever seen... but definitely enjoyable.  There was even a couple things that I really didn't see coming... which is always a good thing! The release has a nice collection of extras including trailers for other releases from the After Dark Horrorfest, Deleted Scenes, Featurettes, Storyboard Comparison, and a commentary. This is one that I feel comfortable recommending to any horror fan.

My Rating:
Out of a possible 5:

SpaceCamp, a review by Danae Cassandra

SpaceCamp
Year of Release: 1986
Directed By:  Harry Winer
Starring: Kate Capshaw, Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston, Larry B. Scott, Joaquin Phoenix, Tate Donovan, Tom Skerritt
Genre: Adventure, Science-Fiction, Disaster

Overview:
Zero gravity meets zero fear in this cosmic comedy-adventure about a summer camp where regular kids check in...and real astronauts check out! Starring Kate Capshaw, Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston, Larry B. Scott, Leaf Phoenix and Tate Donovan, SpaceCamp is a wild and wonderful thrill-ride packed with "special effects...spectacular moments" (Film Journal) and a "gripping climax" (Time Out Film Guide) that's out of this world!

For five typical teens, NASA's space camp promises to be a fun way to blow off the summer. But when a space shuttle exercise misfires, they find themselves launched into orbit, facing the adventure of a lifetime. Now, the only way back to Earth is to take command of the ship and control of their destinies, before time – and oxygen – runs out!

My Thoughts:
I'd forgotten how enjoyable this film is.  I have fond memories of it from childhood, and it's still an entertaining watch.  I still get a warm fuzzy from "Jinx and Max best friends forever." Part of me cringes at the message being sent with the overachiever girl being wrong about a crucial thing and then freezing in decision making though.  Try to imagine the roles of Kevin & Kathryn gender reversed and you see the problem.  I did like the other girl, though, the one who appears to be a bubblehead but is really super-smart.  That quibble aside, it's still a whole-hearted recommendation from me for a fun, kid-friendly movie.

Bechdel Test: Pass

Overall: 3/5

Tom's Buffy and Angel Marathon, a review by Tom

09. What's My Line Pt. 1 (1997-11-17)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Howard Gordon (Writer), Marti Noxon (Writer)
Director: David Solomon
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), David Boreanaz (Angel), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Seth Green (Oz), James Marsters (Spike), Eric Saiet (Dalton), Kelly Connell (Norman Pfister), Bianca Lawson (Kendra), Saverio Guerra (Willy the Snitch), Juliet Landau (Drusilla), Armin Shimerman (Principal Snyder), Michael Rothhaar (Suitman), P. B. Hutton (Mrs. Kalish)

An episode I always liked. The introduction of Kendra and thus a second slayer (which paves the way for Faith :) ). Bringing Oz and Willow closer. I always felt that from this episode on, Buffy started its rise to greatness.

Rating:

10. What's My Line Pt. 2 (1997-11-24)
Writer: Joss Whedon (Created By), Marti Noxon (Writer)
Director: David Semel
Cast: Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers), Nicholas Brendon (Xander Harris), Alyson Hannigan (Willow Rosenberg), Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase), David Boreanaz (Angel), Anthony Stewart Head (Giles), Seth Green (Oz), Saverio Guerra (Willy the Snitch), Kelly Connell (Norman Pfister), Bianca Lawson (Kendra), James Marsters (Spike), Juliet Landau (Drusilla), Danny Strong (Hostage Kid)

This episode turns the table for Dru and Spike. Now she's the strong one, and he will be bound to a wheelchair for awhile.
