Daughters of Darkness, a review by Danae Cassandra

Daughters of Darkness
Year of Release: 1971
Directed By: Harry Kumel
Starring: John Karlen, Delphine Seyrig, Danielle Ouimet, Andrea Rau
Genre: Horror

Overview:My Thoughts:
This was a beautiful, stylish film.  The shot of the Countess and Valerie standing at the top of the hill, where the Countess extends her cape and envelops Valerie is simply magnificent.  This is an exercise in artistry, in a Gothic aesthetic, a triumph of art direction.  It's also a very, very slow moving film.  There's very little vampire lore, very little action, very little blood.  There's also quite a bit of mystery, and some of it never explained.  A lot is left to the viewer to infer.

It reminded me a lot of A Virgin Among the Living Dead, which was equally beautiful, unexplained, and featured a lot of artistic nudity.  I'd definitely be willing to watch it again, but I can't give it an unqualified recommendation.  The characters aren't engaging, the plot is thin, and the pace is extremely slow.  It could be extremely dull to the wrong viewer.  I'd almost tell someone to watch Last Year at Marienbad first (which isn't a horror movie, of course), and then if they enjoyed that try this.  Definitely for the art house crowd.

Lissi und der wilde Kaiser, a review by Tom

Title: Lissi und der wilde Kaiser
Year: 2007
Director: Michael Bully Herbig
Rating: FSK-6
Length: 81 Min.
Video: Widescreen 2.35
Audio: German: Dolby Digital 5.1 , German: DTS 5.1 , German: Other
Subtitles: German

Stars:
Michael Bully Herbig
Christian Tramitz
Rick Kavanian
Lotte Ledl
Waldemar Kobus
Badesalz

My Thoughts:
This movie is the director's third movie based on a regular skit from his TV comedy show "Bullyparade". The first was a parody of the Winnetou movies and Western in general. The second a parody of Star Trek and Science Fiction movies in general.
This one now is a parody of the Sissi movies. It is the first one done as a CGI animated film instead of live-action. It stars the voices of director Michael 'Bully' Herbig (Sissi) and Christian Tramitz (Franz) who both played these roles in live-action skits on the 'Bullyparade'. Bully has said as a joke in interviews, that he decided to do this movie as an animated film, because Christian Tramitz didn't want to do the kissing scene with Bully :)
The movie is much better than I had feared when I first heard about this undertaking. The animation is top (especially because such movies are rare in German productions). I especially liked the facial expression of Lissi. They were modeled after Bully himself. I often forgot that this is animated and not really Bully himself.
Also the jokes were better than expected. I especially liked the movie references (e.g. the King Kong one).

Audio:English: Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, Spanish: Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, French: Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround, Commentary: Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo, Commentary: Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo

Plot:
The Saga continues with the Emmy-winning 'Star Wars: Clone Wars', available for the first time on DVD. This animated micro-series, directed by Genndy Tartakovsky, captures George Lucas' vision in a dynamic animated style that is a visual delight for all ages. 'Star Wars: Clone Wars Volume One' reveals the epic adventures that bridge the story arc between 'Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones' and 'Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith'. Follow the valiant Jedi Knights and the brave soldiers of the Republic's clone army as they battle againts the droid forces of the Separatists, led by the evil Sith Lord, Count Dooku. Witness the battles that made galactic heroes out of Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and along the way get a first look at the new menace from 'Episode III', General Grievous. This is a must-have for any 'Star Wars' DVD collection.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
1.01 Chapter 1

This is the first Clone Wars TV series. Never saw the newer one. This series put me off completely from the modern Star Wars. There is only one true Star Wars, and that is the original trilogy.
