Masters of the Universe, a review by RossRoy

Masters of the Universe
WHAT THEY SAY
Planet Eternia and the Castle of Greyskull are under threat from the evil Skeletor, who wants to take over the planet. A group of Freedom Fighters led by the heroic He-Man are accidentally transported to Earth by a mysterious Cosmic Key which holds the power to make Skeletor all-powerful. Once on Earth, He-Man joins alliances with two teenagers as they attempt to find the key and return home.

MY THOUGHTS
I thought I had never seen this movie before. But something felt really familiar right from the start. Some scenes were too familiar to be just a coincidence. And then it hit me, when you see Man-At-Arms, Gwildor and Teela eating at the chicken restaurant! Yes, I had seen this movie before!

Anyway... I don't know what to say really. I didn't strike me as particularly good, but I wasn't bored with it. It was fun and entertaining, but gosh are the effects second-rate! But, I thought Frank Langella did a great job as Skeletor. It's obvious the whole movie is kind of limited, but Langella did a great job with what he had to work with.

So yeah, the movie's got a lot going for it - blatant plot holes, cheesy effects, bad acting, steroid-induced muscles - yeah, its got it all! ;)

Vampires: Out for Blood, a review by addicted2dvd

Vampires: Out for Blood
In the dark throbbing world of underground raves, people are vanishing without a trace and Detective Hank Holten (Kevin Dillon) is the only one who knows the terrible truth. Vampires. As Hank delves deeper into this bloody case, the horrors he witnesses take a toll on his sanity. Once bitten by a master vampire, Hank becomes the hunter intent on destroying these lethal creatures before they claim more victims.

My Thoughts:
While watching this one I was checking out some online reviews for it... and discovered that it is not a very liked movie. I was kind of surprised by this... even though it is not one of the best vampire movies I ever seen... I definitely enjoyed it. I first saw this movie on cable... I think on the USA channel... or maybe it was on the Sci-Fi channel... don't remember for sure. But I remember thinking then how much I enjoyed it... and was happy when it was announced for release. Since buying it I watched it around 4 or 5 times since. So I definitely feel it is worth the time to put into the movie. But after seeing a bunch of the online reviews I would say maybe you should rent it fist... after all... I know I tend to be more forgiving then most people when it comes to horror movies. It also helps that I am a big fan of genre actor Lance Henriksen... who plays the Police Captain.

Warner Home Video (United Kingdom)
Length:889 min.
Video:Anamorphic Widescreen 1.78

Plot:
Dark, brooding, pulsing with bloodlust and transcendent with romance, The Vampire Diaries - which started as a series of must-read novels by L.J. Smith - has become a must-watch television hit. Season One offers unforgettable characters, living and undead. They are vampire brothers Stefan and Damon, one good and one evil; Elena, a double for the beauty both brothers loved some 150 years earlier; plus Jeremy, Bonnie, Matt and more denizens of Mystic Falls, VA. All are caught up in a spellbinding web of secrets, passion and terror.

Extras:
  • Commentary
  • Deleted Scenes
  • Featurettes
  • Outtakes

My Thoughts:
"Dawson's Creek" goes vampire. This is about the basic premise. It even is created by the same guy. At first glance, it looks like a Twilight TV series (although I have seen Twilight, I only can go on my impression on it). But it is based on a 1991 trilogy of books (pre-dating Twilight). But it was obviously made to cash in on Twilight's success.
Overall I enjoyed this series. Even though you do not really feel this series is something special, you cannot help to continue watching it.
This season's cliffhanger makes me want to continue with season 2. Although I am unhappy with a character's death in the finale

There is something which really bothers me, which doesn't really have to do with this series. Recently Microsoft pushes their product placement. That on itself doesn't bother me. Apple has done it for years. I first noticed in when I recently watched the ninth season of Smallville, where instead of seeing Apple logos on all notebooks we suddenly see Windows logos and the Watchtower computer all running with a fresh install of Windows 7. Then I saw Room in Rome, where they really pushed Microsoft Bing and a Google Earth like application. And in this series, all the characters are using the search engine Bing. So far so good. But one scene did go too far and pulled me out of the series. One character proclaimed, that she "binged" it, with the camera closing in the Bing website, so that you knew what the hell she was talking about. It was quite obvious that they are trying to bring this verb into the vocabularly of the viewers to compete with the success of "to google".
