Mary Reilly, a review by Rich

Title: Mary Reilly

Movie Count:17
TV Ep. Count:13

Runtime:108
Certificate:R
Year:1996
Genres:Horror, Suspense/Thriller

Plot:The classic horror story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde gets a chilling new twist when seen through the eyes of Dr. Jekyll's devoted maid, MARY REILLY.
JULIA ROBERTS, JOHN MALKOVICH and the writer and director of DANGEROUS LIAISONS take terror to a new level as the immortal conflict between good and evil is played out in the soul of one man. Equally attracted to her kind employer, Dr.Jekyll, and his mysterious assistant, Mr. Hyde, Mary Reilly must confront her own dangerous desires if she is to survive humanity's greatest evil.

My Review:
Interesting viewpoint on the age old classic of Jekyll and Hyde, only the high calibre of the support cast (George Cole and Kathy Bates) dragged this from being too mundane. Why this would have a horror genre is beyond me, it is purely a drama with a couple of gruesome attachments.
The backdrops and direction give it an authentic feel, only spoilt by Roberts intermittent attempts at pulling off an Irish accent (it might even have been an attempt at cockney!). The introduction of romance in the story gave it a new twist, but strayed too far away from Stevensons original for my liking.
An okay film to pass the time, but not one to recommend as a purchase.
My Rating
Out of a Possible 5

My Thoughts:
This is one I somehow never seen before... or at least don't remember ever seeing before. It is not a terrible movie... but I definitely seen better. The storyline seemed to be a good idea but they could have followed through better. I found that I didn't care for most the characters as much as I should have and the basic plot I seen many times before. Granted this film is up over 30 years old so this one did it before many of the others. But that is just comes with the fact of not seeing it when it was first released. It is worth the time put in to watch it... but don't expect too much from it.

"Due South" marathon, a review by Tom

2.18 Flashback (1996-09-19)
Writer: Paul Haggis (Created By), Peter Mohan (Writer), Michael Teversham (Writer)
Director: Gilbert Shilton
Cast: Paul Gross (Constable Benton Fraser), David Marciano (Detective Ray Vecchio), Beau Starr (Lt. Harding Welsh), Tony Craig (Detective Jack Huey), Catherine Bruhier (Elaine), Daniel Kash (Detective Louis Gardino), Ramona Milano (Francesca Vecchio), Camilla Scott (Inspector Margaret Thatcher), Sandra Nelson (Sheila), Tony Rosato (Clifford), Kristin Lehman (Rhonda), Gordon Pinsent (Fraser Sr.), Eleanor Davies (Karen), Karen Glave (Darlene), Ho Chow (The Doctor)

Considering that this is a clip show episode, where half of the episode consists of footage of other episodes, it was quite enjoyful. The selected clips were good. But it is sad, that the series finale (originally the series was cancelled after season 2, but was resurrected a year later) is a clip show.
