Planet of the Vampires, a review by Jimmy

Title : Planet of the Vampires (1965)

Overview
A band of space travellers has just intercepted a distress call from a distant world! Is it a desperate cry for help... or something far more sinister? After landing on the shadowy planet, the crew s attacked by a horde of disembodied aliens with a diabolical plan: to conquer the universe by controlling the crew's minds and stealing their souls - proving that even in outer space, possession is 9/10 of the law!

My Impression
I'm a big fan of Mario Bava the director of this movie and I've bought it because of him. What a deception! This movie is so slow moving that I've fell asleep while watching it (that's why I've watched only one movie this afternoon). Nothing happen, no action, no vampires, ....Sure the visual is beautifull, but this is not enough.

Now maybe the problem is the american version of this film, my oppinion could have been different with the original italian movie : Terrore nello spazio (Terror in space). The original movie version is only 2 minutes longuer, but maybe the editing or the dialogue are different. I'm not sure if I really want to try it, but I can't believe that Mario Bava had directed a movie boring like this one.

My thoughts about Dark Shadows:
After hearing the news of Christopher Lee's passing I thought it would be a good idea to see if I had anything unwatched with Mr. Lee. I had  - of course - no major roles of his in my unwatched pile, but I did have a couple of films where he had small roles, so I chose Dark Shadows. As it turned out, his contribution to this film is hardly more than a cameo, but even so he makes a great impression.

As for the rest of the film, I thought it was OK, but certainly not one of Tim Burton's best films. I am not familiar with the long running TV series that this film is based on, so I have no opinion as to how well it emulates the style of the show. The script didn't impress me all that much, and much of the cast seemed wasted in their roles.

I'm not a big Depp fan, and I'm not quite sure how to evaluate his performance. I do like Michelle Pfeiffer, but I felt she was underused. And it felt like Victoria (Bella Heathcote) got lost in the script.

Still, the film had its moments, so it wasn't a total waste of time.
I rate this title

Doctor Who
Season 1.01 An Unearthly Child
Writer: Anthony Coburn (Writer)
Director: Waris Hussein
Cast: William Hartnell (Dr. Who), William Russell (Ian Chesterton), Jacqueline Hill (Barbara Wright), Carole Ann Ford (Susan Foreman)

This first episode of the classic Doctor Who series is a nice introduction to the characters and the series. I enjoyed this first part. The following three episodes which makes up the first Doctor Who storyline were quite boring though.
