7th Heaven, a review by Antares7th Heaven (1927) 83/100 - Bette Davis... Joan Crawford... Greta Garbo... Norma Shearer... Katharine Hepburn, y'all got nothing on Janet Gaynor. Every film I watch with this amazing actress is a revelation. It's sad too, because she was one of the lucky ones who made the transition from silent to sound and maintained a following and great acting work, yet chose to walk away from it all. But it's really her silent work where her chameleon like talents are truly showcased. There are an abundance of scenes in this film where she runs the gamut of emotions in only a few short frames and she just radiates. The only fault I can find with the film itself, has to lie with the abrupt introduction of France's entry into World War I. It comes out of nowhere, and it kind of throws a monkey wrench into what was, up to that point, a hauntingly beautiful, romance film. From that point, Borzage lays on the melodrama rather thickly, like he's laying tar across a large roof. I wish he had just stuck with the story in the apartment and Chico and Diane's awakening love for each other. It's in those moments where the film really sings out. Chico... Diane... HEAVEN!!!!! What the color coding means... He kind of sleepwalks his way through the role, and I felt his presence halted the screenplay when he appeared. There's also a weird action scene in a bathhouse where Ichi defends himself against a dozen naked yakuza. And while the use of water buckets is quite well placed, the scene seems to be just there for shock and giggles. It's definitely a middle of the road offering in the series, but Toho is starting to get it right. Hopefully, the last four films will progress more towards the better Daiei renderings. Loaded with fantastic extras, this collection contains all seven butt-kicking seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer on 39 discs. So jump into your favorite demon-filled episodes whenever you like, or watch all the high-voltage vampire action from the beginning! Episodes:
Stars: Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers Nicholas Brendon as Xander Harris Alyson Hannigan as Willow Rosenberg Anthony Stewart Head as Giles Charisma Carpenter as Cordelia Chase David Boreanaz as Angel Seth Green as Oz Emma Caulfield as Anya Amber Benson as Tara Michelle Trachtenberg as Dawn Summers James Marsters as Spike My Thoughts: The Show:Earlier this month a friend gave me this complete series set... replacing my original release (digipak) season sets. This was perfect timing as I really got in the mood to watch this series again when I watched the Halloween episodes last month. So getting this set was the perfect excuse to watch the series again... after all... I had to make sure all the discs worked right? It has been 5 years since I last re-watched the entire series. And I must say... I really enjoyed every minute of revisiting the series. While i enjoyed this series from start to end... my favorite season has to be the second when we had Evil Angel as the "Big Bad" for the season. My least favorite season has to be season 4.... where Buffy starts college... they add in the Initiative and Adam was the "Big Bad". The only good thing to come out of this season was the introduction of Tara. I remember at the time there was many people that had a problem with the final season where we meet a bunch of the "Potential Slayers" and The First is the final "Big Bad" of the series. At the time I was concerned as well... but as it turned out I enjoyed the season quite a bit... and thought the finale was a very good ending to the series. With that said I would love to see a Reunion Movie air to catch us up on the surviving characters of the series. Sure... we got a season 8 comics... which I have the motion comics DVD of... but I would still love to see more. Preferably with the original cast if possible. The Packaging: I wanted to say a little something about the packaging here as well. I like it much better then the original bulky digipaks I had. But it still could have been better. The packaging for this is the 7 re-release keep cases inside a box with a slip cover over it. Which you would think would save a lot of shelf space... but because of an odd choice on how the keep cases are housed it saves very little... if any shelf space. Another downer for this release is that it does not include the extra bonus DVD that the "Chosen Collection" came with. Final Thoughts: Over-all it has been a fun two to three weeks revisiting this series. I am thrilled to have upgraded to this complete series set as I really don't care for the digipaks the original season sets were released in. Even though they are the same discs, I do like this packaging better. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete Series on November 23rd, 2012) |
