Shoot the Moon, a review by James*Now TomGaines-ified to Pete's format, with a cellophane twist. Shoot the Moon Available individually or as part of:Title: Shoot the Moon Year: 1982 Director: Alan Parker Rating: R Length: 124 Min. Media Type: DVD Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1 Audio: English: Dolby Digital Mono, Commentary: Dolby Digital Stereo Subtitles: English, French Stars: Albert Finney Diane Keaton Karen Allen Peter Weller Dana Hill Plot: George and Faith Dunlap have it all: financial success, adoring children, a gracious home. And yet they have nothing. Faith sums it up when she introduces herself to George's friends at a posh party: "I'm not his friend. I'm his wife." Albert Finney and Diane Keaton star in a poignant, unsparing story of a marriage in crisis written by Bo Goldman ('Scent of a Woman') and directed by Alan Parker ('Mississippi Burning'). The Dunlaps surely once loved each other. But George has a mistress, Faith drifts into an affair and silences between them are broken by too many wrong words. At once unique and universal, their story "contains a raw emotional power of the sort we rarely see in domestic dramas" (Roger Ebert, 'Chicago Sun-Times'). This movie came out the year I graduated from high school, too new in the adult world to connect or even have a desire to see a film like this. Now, 25 years and a lot of living later, I felt every minute of the pain on the screen. I can't say that it's a fun movie to watch. It's more of a catharsis. It leaves you with an overall emotional impact rather than one of enjoyment. Although I will say that it was enjoyable to watch Albert Finney and Diane Keaton for sure. They did a great job. The revelation for me in this cast though was Dana Hill. I remember her from years ago, and sadly as I looked things up on IMDb, I see that she passed away about 10 years ago at 32. It's a wonder to me that she wasn't nominated for awards for her performance here. She plays the oldest daughter and did such a great job portraying the pain and anguish that is felt by the children in divorce. Also in the cast of kids are Tina Yothers (Family Ties) and Tracy Gold (Growing Pains) when they were quite young. The DVD presents a good anamorphic transfer in the original mono sound with a commentary. It's a good movie, which I recommend, but it's more of an experience than entertainment. 7 on the cellophane scale. (From The Viewage of James aka m.cellophane on January 3rd, 2008) Hancock, a review by addicted2dvdTitle: Hancock: 2-Disc Unrated Special Edition Year: 2008 Director: Peter Berg Rating: Unrated Length: 102 Min. Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 2.40:1 Audio: English: Dolby Digital: 5.1, French: Dolby Digital: 5.1 Subtitles: English, French, Spanish Stars: Will Smith (1968) Charlize Theron Jason Bateman Jae Head Eddie Marsan David Mattey Plot:The Pursuit of Happyness, 2006) stars in this action-packed comedy as Hancock, a sarcastic, hard-living and misunderstood superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public. When Hancock grudgingly agrees to an extreme makeover from idealistic publicist Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman, JunoMonster) with similar powers to his and the key to his secret past. Extras: Scene Access Feature Trailers Featurettes Closed Captioned Digital Copy Theatrical and Unrated Versions My Thoughts: This is the second time for me to watch this movie. The first time I watched it... while I liked it... I wasn't completely thrilled with it. But that is because it just wasn't the movie I was expecting from the trailer. So I went into it today hoping I would like it more this time around. And I did enjoy more then I did the last time. I will say that it went downhill a little towards the end of the movie. But for the most part I really enjoyed it. I thought both Will Smith and Charlize Theron were good in it... but I have to admit I wasn't that impressed with Jason Bateman. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From My Alphabet Marathon Reviews on July 4th, 2010) Sliders Marathon, a review by addicted2dvdSeason 4: Disc 5 19. MY BROTHER'S KEEPER Quinn's body is not his own when the Sliders arrive in a world where his is expected to act as an organ donor for his injured double. My Thoughts: This is a very good episode. In this episode Malcolm Jamal Warner (The Cosby Show) gust stars as a clone... where in this world they create clones to harvest for people when transplants are needed. My Rating: 20. THE CHASM The serene town of Middletown hides a deadly secret of human sacrifice that threatens to claim Rembrandt and Maggie. My Thoughts: Another episode I enjoyed quite a bit. Though I must admit that the ending... what the chasm leads to was a little bit of a let down. But over all... was worth the watch. My Rating: 21. ROADS TAKEN An unusual slide forces Quinn and Maggie to prematurely age, and it's up to Rembrandt to find a cure before they are destroyed by life in a "bubble universe." My Thoughts: This is a good episode... but not one of my favorites. they try something a little new in this episode... by having their slide (well Quinn and Maggie's stress while in the slide) creating a world. My Rating: 22. REVELATIONS An aging sci-fi writer helps Quinn and Colin reunite with their birth parents, but the warm family reunion is not what it seems. My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this season finale. Quinn and Colin think they are finally home. I did have one problem with this episode. Every time before when they opened the vortex it was stationary. But this time they open it while being on the top of a moving train... and instead of the vortex staying still and them moving away from it... the vortex followed behind the train to let them jump in. I know... it is a sci-fi show and anything is possible... but it just wasn't being true to all the episodes before it. My Rating: (From Sliders Marathon on December 18th, 2009) |
