Time Traveller, a review by Tom
Stars: Riisa Naka as Akari Akinobu Nakao as Ryota Narumi Yasuda as Kazuko Masanobu Katsumura as Goro Kanji Ishimaru as Kazuo Plot: Japan, 2010. High-spirited student Hasegawa Akari (Naka Riisa) finds she's succeeded in getting into Shotoku University's pharmacy department where her mother, Yoshiyama Kazuko (Yasuda Narumi), is a professor. Kazuko has a reputation for being mildly eccentric from her hobby of collecting coins from 1972; but her real secret is a liquid she's developed that can make its drinker travel back through time. When an old friend, delivery man Goro (Katsumura Masanobu), gives her some old photos he's found, her memories of her first love, junior high school classmate Fukamachi Kazuo, are re-restrengthened and she determines more than ever to travel back to find him. When Kazuko is suddenly hospitalised by a car accident, Akari offers to go in her place and give Kazuo a message. However, by mistake Akari ends up not at Setagaya Junior High in April 1972 but at Shotoku University's science lab in February 1974. Trying to track Kazuo down, Akari ends up staying with scifi geek-cum-amateur filmmaker Mizorogi Ryota (Nakao Akiyoshi), who believes her story that she's from the future. But Kazuo proves difficult to track down, for reasons Akari is gradually to discover. Extras:
My Thoughts: This is kind of a sequel to the original "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" novel. Like the great anime was. Only this time it's the daughter of the girl from the novel who makes a time jump, not the niece. Also there is only one time jump, when she travels back to 1974. This movie is more like a sequel than the anime was. The anime was more like a spin-off.I enjoyed this movie, although not as much as I did the anime. Fun fact though is, that the same person who voiced the main character in the anime also stars in this live-action movie as the girl travelling through time. Rating: (From Tom's Time-Travel Movie Reviews on February 20th, 2011) She Hate Me, a review by RichShe Hate Me When biotech exec Jack (Anthony Mackie, 8 Mile) blows the whistle on his greedy drug-conglomerate bosses (Woody Harrelson, Natural Born Killers and Ellen Barkin, Sea of Love) over an insider-trading scandal, he gets more than he bargained for. Once this playa is played, he finds himself hitting rock bottom when an old flame, Fatina (Kerry Washington, Save the Last Dance) blows back into his life with the ultimate job offer: father her child, no strings attached. Teaming up to turn the tables on corporate culture, he sets up shop as a stud-for-hire at 10 G's a pop for a bevy of wealthy lesbians. When Jack delivers the goods, even his ex's glamazon gal pals can't resist his considerable...charms. Torn between love and money, Jack chases his American Dream all the way to the bank. But things heat up when Jack impregnates the Mafia daughter (Monica Bellucci, The Matrix Reloaded) of a notorious boss (John Turturro, Secret Window), triggering the FBI to expose Jack's cash-cow scheme. A Spike Lee film again about minorities (lesbians), but ended up more like a male fantasy! It is a bizarre mix of sexual politics and big business, and at times you have to wonder whether a message is trying to come through the film in subliminal form. After half an hour or so, as the lead finds a new occupation in life having sex with beautiful lesbians to impregnate them (at times quite graphic) for $10k a time, it feels a bit pervy. Throw in cartoon sperm (not literally), an artsy feel at times, and certainly a few erotic scenes. Then near the end it all gets a bit strange and emotional as he is involved in a menage-a-trois with the main lesbian couple, and Dad to the 2 kids they have had from his seed. It must be humiliating for a real lesbian if they saw this film, as it basically says that a handsome man with big 'equipment' would immediately make them go like a train and realise what they are missing! And the ending scenes are truly cringe-worthy. Saying all of the above, it was still watchable in an odd way, and I especially recommend this to Tom for his lesbian marathon. **Monica Bellucci mini-marathon (From Riches Random Reviews on August 24th, 2009) Tom's TV Pilots marathon, a review by Tom
Plot: Hideki Motosuwa is a poor country guy who just moved to the city to further his study. One day on his way home from work, he discovers a 'Persocom', a maiden-shaped robot laying in the dumpster, discarded and wrapped up in bandages. Chobits 1.01 Chii erwacht In the world of Chobits, PCs are now computers which are looking like people. When I first saw this series, I expected the premise to be more interesting. Even though it is a good anime. Rating: (From Tom's TV Pilots marathon on March 31st, 2011) |
