Marion Bridge, a review by goodguy

   Marion Bridge (CA 2002)
Written by: Daniel McIvor
Directed by: Wiebke von Carolsfeld
Starring: Molly Parker, Rebecca Jenkins, Stacy Smith
DVD: R1-US Film Movement (2005)

My rating:

Cover blurb: In the midst of struggling to overcome her self-destructive behavior, the youngest of three sisters, Agnes (Molly Parker), returns to her hometown in Nova Scotia determined to confront the past. Her arrival sets in motion a chain of events that allows a family of women to each in their own way re-connect with the world and each other. The film speaks volumes about siblings and parental relationships with a beautiful realized tale of loss, healing and humor.

The basic story of Marion Bridge is a bit like in those Lifetime movies of the week, but it is done right here. In fact, Carolsfeld's approach is so subtle and low-key that you might mistake it for boring, but it has the most startling effect in a confrontation near the end. Molly Parker is one of my favorite actresses, and she is great here as always. As a bonus, a very young Ellen Page can be seen here in a small but crucial role.

Miss Congeniality, a review by Dragonfire

Legs waxed. Lips glossed. Gun ready. FBI Agent Gracie Hart is going undercover as a hopeful eager to be the next Miss United States. But Gracie doesn't have a beauty-pageant bone in her body.

Sandra Bullock gets physical in 'Miss Congeniality', bringing her powerhouse talent for physical comedy to the role of an operative posing as a pageant contestant in order to ferret out a terrorist targeting the event. Michael Caine deliciously plays the frustrated consultant hired to turn the FBI's Dirty Harriet into a poised beauty. And Benjamin Bratt, Candice Bergen, William Shatner and Ernie Hudson also score points for hilarity in this box-office smash. From big laughs to sly quips, 'Miss' hits.

My Thoughts

I love this movie and have watched it many times.  This was actually one of the first DVDs I got.  This type of comedy is what Sandra Bullock does best and it would be nice if she did it more often.  How Gracie was trying to fit in at the pageant was really funny.  Vic, the guy who was helping her act like a pageant contestant, was really funny.  There was also a bit of action added in and the end of the pageant was hilarious.  Unfortunately, the sequel wasn't that great.

Sliders Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 1

1. PILOT (Double Length Episode)
A physics accident sends student Quinn Mallory and his trio of companions on an interdimensional roller-coaster ride to an apocalyptic San Francisco. After a narrow escape from an icy death, the Sliders find themselves in a Soviet-ruled U.S., where their only hope of escape is to free an imprisoned revolutionary.

My Thoughts:
This is a very good story. I enjoyed every second of it. It is a good introduction to all the characters. And the ending is well thought out where you think everything is going to be fine... then everything is turned upside down in a shocking and emotional way.

My Rating:

2. FEVER
When Wade is infected with a deadly virus on an Earth wracked by an epidemic, Rembrandt and Arturo race to find a cure and free Quinn from a Gestapo-like health agency.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode... I enjoyed a lot. This one shows that something that is simple and taken for granted can be life changing in one of the alternate universes.

My Rating:

3. LAST DAYS
The salvation of a world facing destruction by an asteroid rests in the hands of Arturo and an overzealous young scientist. Meanwhile, Quinn and Wade begin to face their feelings for each other.

My Thoughts:
Another episode I enjoyed a lot. I always enjoyed the disaster type movies with such storylines... and they did a good job converting it to a TV episode. This episode completes the first disc. The extras on this disc includes previews and a commentary on the pilot episode.
