Galaxy Quest , a review by Dragonfire

Galaxy Quest My Thoughts I love this movie and was in the mood to see it again.  I have seen some of the Star Trek tv shows and movies, so I know a little about the characters, but I don't know everything.  I have heard of the conventions that fans have.  I thought that aspect of the movie, with how ...obsessed some of the fans were, is very realistic.  It is clear to me, even with my limited Trek knowledge, that Galaxy Quest is intended to be a show like Star Trek, except the show never got turned into a series of movies.  The cast is all stuck being associated with these roles and some of them, like Alexander, hate that.  The plot is like Three Amigos with the aliens believing that the episodes of the tv show are historical documents and the actors are a real crew of a space ship that has deal with all sort of bad aliens.  Even though the plot is similar to the earlier movie, there is enough different for the movie to be really fun and entertaining.  The story is developed enough to be interesting and entertaining.  So much that happens in really funny.   The characters really make the movie and the acting is wonderful.  I love Alan Rickman in his part of a classically trained actor who feels trapped by being associated with this role.  Tony Shalhoub is really good as Fred.  He is so calm when the others are freaking out, like after they have been transported onto the ship or after their first encounter with Seris when they are fleeing and the ship is in such bad shape..there's Fred all calm telling Jason that the ship can't take it.  There is just so much that I enjoy about this movie. I loved this one when I first saw it and I still feel the same way.  It is really fun and entertaining and the cast is great in their roles. I did post a review on Epinions a few years ago. To Catch a Thief, a review by Jon

To Catch a Thief (1955) ****

I remembered To Catch a Thief as as underwhelming, but watching it again I found it to be far more enjoyable. It's light and unassuming, with little to mark it out technically, but very well played and quite fun. The romance is more obvious than usual and is fundamentally in place earlier than Hitchcock's usual man-wrongfully-accused-on-the-run-falls-in-love setup.

The man in question this time is the brilliant Cary Grant, one of Hitch's most dependable leading men. Here he has a chance to show off his cat-like grace properly as a cat-burglar. He was the best actor to never play Bond and once again, I have to wonder how much influence Hitchcock had on the choices made in the early years of that franchise. Certainly the plot could easily be suited to an average Bond entry, complete with infiltrating high society using a false name and a scene set in a casino (very funny too, in Hitchcock's typically cheeky style!). Grace Kelly complements Grant and does enough as a slightly spoilt rich kid, but adds a little sassiness that only she could pull off. The scene where she is convinced of Grant's guilt is brilliantly staged.

That follows the famous fireworks moment and it is one of the films highlights. While the fireworks themselves are a bit limp, it's the staging in the room, both lighting and acting, that really impress. The climax also impresses with Grant hiding in the shadows of a rooftop, but overall there's nothing flashy, just beautiful landscapes to wonder at. The last time I saw it, I rather dismissed it as a holiday brochure, but it has far more substance than that. Not enough to be amongst the Master's best, but a very enjoyable way to pass a couple of hours.

Alien Nation: Dark Horizon
The fate of the entire planet is on the line when Ahpossno, a ruthless Overseer, is sent to Earth to return the Tenctonese to slavery, and the casualties hit close to home for Francisco when a Purist group develops a virus designed to kill all Newcomers. Picking up right where the series left off, 'Dark Horizon' provides the stunning answers to several key unanswered questions.

My Thoughts:
I really liked how they did this reunion movie... Mainly because it takes over right where the series left off. And that is something that this series needed as it left off with a huge cliffhanger when the series was canceled. I am so glad that all the Alien Nation movies came out on DVD as I have never seen the reunion movies before. So it was great for me to see how they tied everything up from the series. I only watched the one movie in this set so far... but  I must say it looks like they really did a good job with this release. Audio/video quality is good... a nice selection of extras... though I would have liked to seen a trailer/TV spot for this one before I watched it... unfortunately there was none on the DVD.
