The Red House
| Year: 1947 | 100 min. | United States

Lovers of film noir have long treasured this eerie gem, produced during what has come to be regarded as Hollywood's classic noir period (early-1940s to late-1950s). It is now available for the first time in stunning high-definition Blu-Ray.
Edward G. Robinson plays an aging farmer with a dark secret he's trying to keep hidden. He and his sister Ellen (Judith Anderson) have raised Meg (Allene Roberts) since she was a little girl, after her parents mysteriously disappeared. But now Meg is coming of age, and bringing a male friend from high school around to help with chores on the farm. The teens are warned against wandering into the nearby woods, where terryfying screams have been heard in the night emanating from an abandoned red house. But curiousity threatens to get the better of them.
Director Delmer Daves enjoyed a successful, 35-year career in Hollywood as a producer, director and writer (he adapted this particular story from a novel first serialized in The Saturday Evening Post in 1945). Better-known for tough westerns and war movies (including 3:10 To Yuma, Broken Arrow and Destination Tokyo), this was an interesting diversion for him. But credit is also due to cinematographer Bert Glannon, a veteran of numerous noir/crime titles (not to mention work with such acclaimed directors as John Ford and Cecil B. DeMille), who was responsible for executing the sort of unexpected camera angles and shadow lighting that would become the signature of a good film noir. Meanwhile, viewers will also want to watch for a young Julie London, appearing in one of her earliest film roles.

Nearly 30 top drivers take part in the excitement. Buckle up to race with the best.

And my acquisitions of yesterday:

They Came To Cordura
| Year: 1959 | 123 min. |

Called "an impressive and important film" by Variety, THEY CAME TO CORDURA was hailed by critics as "the most disturbing war picture since The Bridge on the River Kwai". A timeless story of courage and cowardice set against the backdrop of the 1916 war against Pancho Villa. The film stars Gary Cooper as Thomas Thorn, a career Army officer given the humiliating task of leading five Medal of Honor candidates to the military base of Cordura, Texas. Branded a coward during battle, Thorn hopes to learn what these men, each of whom performed heroically under fire, possess which he lacks. But as the grueling journey through the desert progresses, the "heroes" panic, attempting murder, mutiny and rape as the quest for survival reveals their true characters.

Rita Hayworth, in a dramatic departure from her glamour-girl roles, co-stars as the seventh member of the group, an American expatriate accused of aiding the Mexicans. At first contemptuous of Thorn, she gradually comes to appreciate his quiet integrity as he leads his mutinous charges through a desperate, action-packed odyssey. Filled with both exciting battle scenes and finely-tuned drama, their treacherous trek to the town of Cordura (which is also the Spanish word for courage) is a rugged and riveting tale of bravery far more enduring than the fleeting heroics of battle.

Desire Under the Elms
| Year: 1958 | 111 min. | United States

Eugene O'Neill's riveting play about a family torn apart by greed explodes onto the screen in a soaring film version starring Anthony Perkins and Sophia Loren. Perkins is the farmer's son Eben, awaiting the day he will inherit the land from his tyrannical widowed father (Burl Ives). But when Eben's father takes a new wife and announces he'll leave the farm to her, passions erupt in a fiery night of lust and fury between Eben and his new stepmother (Sophia Loren in her Hollywood film debut). With a sweeping score by Elmer Bernstein, Desire Under the Elms sizzles with a heated story of passion unleashed and temptation unbridled, and a heavy price paid for the pleasures of sin.

The True Story of Alexander The Great
| Year: 2004 | 150 min. | United States

Tutored by Aristotle, helpless witness to his father's assassination, and a brilliant, pioneering tactician, Alexander the Great had conquered the known world - and sealed his legacy as one of history's most remarkable rulers - by the age of 25.

In the year 334 B.C. 20 year old King Alexander of Macedonia decided to bring the farthest reaches of the world under one domain. Over the next 12 years, he led a grand army across more than 20,000 miles and eventually brought all of Asia under his control, only to perish from battle wounds at the age of 32. Incorporating dramatic onsite reenactments with high-end computer graphics and the expertise of renowned scholars, THE TRUE STORY OF ALEXANDER THE GREAT is a special presentation from THE HISTORY CHANNEL®, examining the life and career of this military genius, impassioned lover, and fearless leader.

Hosted by Peter Woodward (Conquest), this definitive program is available on DVD for the first time.
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.

Laverne & Shirley: The Eighth and Final Season
UPC 032429-145796 | United States 1982 | 543 minutes | Paramount Home Entertainment

It's the finale season for the fun and funny twosome – Laverne (Penny Marshall) and Shirley (Cindy Williams). In Season Eight of the hit TV show, the girls are back and in for some hilarious and touching moments. After meeting the man of her dreams, Shirley weds Walter and runs off to Europe with him. It's a misadventure-a-minute for Laverne, who's still breaking all the rules – whether she's working as a Playboy Bunny, robbing a bank, or living in a nunnery under a strict vow of silence. Lenny (Michael McKean) and Squiggy (David L. Lander) think they've struck gold when they find a treasure map leading them into the desert, and Carmine(Eddie Makka) moves to New York to become a Broadway star! With fantastice guest stars, huge laughs, and heartfelt goodbyes, the finale season of LAVERNE AND SHIRLEY keeps the dream alive for great television fans everywhere.

Yeah, I know that this season pretty much sucks. But I used to love Laverne & Shirley, and I have all the other seasons, so it seemed wrong to leave out this final season. But Laverne & Shirley without Shirley ...  :(

Madman
UPC 5-027035-012995 | United States 1981 | 89 minutes | Arrow Video

Gather around the campfire, and hear the tale of Madman Marz an ill-tempered farmer who, one dark night, chopped up his wife and two children into pieces.  When the locals learned of his heinous crimes, they exacted revenge - sinking an axe into his head and hanging him from a nearby tree.  But the next day, Marz's body was gone...

Thus the camp counsellor finishes his tale, closing with the warning never to say Marz's name above a whisper, lest the hideously-deformed farmer comes looking for them.  Naturally, the first thing that one of the young campers does is calls out Marz's name - precipitating a terrifying night of murder, mayhem and sexy Jacuzzi vignettes!

Inspired by the same Cropsey urban legend which informed 1981's The Burning and starring Dawn of the Dead's Gaylen Ross (appearing under the pseudonym 'Alexis Dubin'), Madman stands as one of the finest offerings from the golden age of hack 'n' slash.

The Professionals: Mk I
UPC 5-027626-705244 | United Kingdom 1977 | 657 minutes | Network

Bodie and Doyle need little by way of introduction, but if the series had at all escaped you since its debut in 1977 their boss George Cowley, head of CI5, couldn't put it more succinctly than his opening gambit: "anarchy, acts of terror, crimes against the public. To combat it I've got special men – experts from the army, the police, from every service. These are The Professionals".

Featuring the perfect ensemble cast of Martin Shaw, Gordon Jackson (completely against type here) and the much-missed Lewis Collins, the series ran for 57 action-packed episodes and made an immediate impact on British and then international audiences which has sustained 35 years. But the series has never looked this good. Painstakingly restored from the camera-original negatives the series could have been made yesterday. No matter how many times you have seen The Professionals, this is a new experience, like seeing it for the first time.

Just arrived from Arrow's sale:

Macabre
UPC 5-027035-005416 | Italy 1980 | 89 minutes | Arrow Video, Arrow Films

Lamberto Bava, son of Mario, made his stunning debut as a director in his own right with a film that is still ranked by many as his best and closest in style to his late father's.

In Macabre a woman devastated by the death of her lover moves into a boarding house where the blind landlord soon begins to suspect that she's resuming her passionate affair with her dead lover! The landlord's quest to find out the truth propels this simmering claustrophobic thriller into a chilling climax and a late night raid on the fridge that'll cure any snack addiction!

A Bay of Blood
UPC 5-027035-006321 | Italy 1971 | 84 minutes | Arrow Video

See the film that set the Slasher movie blueprint! Can you handle the terror of Mario Bava's Giallo classic A Bay of Blood?

When a rich countess is murdered, it's a race to see who'll inherit her estate and you can bet that the body count is going to rise rapidly in the process as the plot twists spin wildly out of control.

The pile of bloodied corpses is going to get higher and higher as one by one the mangled victims are hung, speared, stabbed and macheted.

Thirteen horrific murders turn the screen crimson with blood.

Shivers
UPC 5-027035-011400 | Canada 1975 | 88 minutes | Arrow Video

Initially reviled in its native land (some critics took exception to the fact the film was largely funded by the Canadian taxpayer), Shivers is an intensely claustrophobic, subversive masterpiece and an essential entry in the oeuvre of one of the horror genre s most gifted auteurs, David Cronenberg. Some 40 years after its release, it still retains its power to shock.

Starliner Island is an idyllic community. Cut off from the rest of the world, the luxury apartment block affords its occupants the chance to escape from the hustle and bustle of the big city. But this isolation is to prove fatal when a new breed of parasite – a combination of aphrodisiac and venereal disease which arouses sexual aggression in its hosts – is let loose in the building, resulting in an of orgy terror and mayhem.

Known under a host of alternate titles such as The Parasite Murders and They Came From Within!, Shivers is David Cronenberg's startling debut full-length feature, which anticipates the body-horror concerns of his later films such as The Fly and Videodrome.
