Question on Televisions

My brother is looking to pick up a new TV. He asked me which is better...

- Plasma
- LCD
- LED

I know nothing about flat screen TVs so told him I would ask here.

For what it's worth, my next TV will be LED.  Plasma is a dying technology and has some limitations in size (if that is an issue for your brother).  LCD is less expensive, if cost is a factor, but LED seems to provide more vivid color with much higher contrast ratios and better performance in "high speed" scenes.  I believe it has a faster "switching time" which helps reduce blurring in scenes with fast action.

Best advice.....go out and compare and pick what is most pleasing to your eye (and in the budget)!

What's your budget and that will help us guide you in the right direction. Then, go to any independent specialist and they'll be happy to hook up the relevant tvs and help guide you further.

If money is no problem: OLED
If mainly watching movies (HD) and/or big screens (> 46"): Plasma (usually best Price/Worth-ratio)
If mainly watching TV (SD) and/or smaller screens (up to 32"): LCD (on bigger screens the squarish pixels become evident)
If wanting to save energy on a medium screen (32" - 46"): LED (on screens bigger than 42" LED is still far more expensive than Plasma)

LED and OLED have by far the best Black (achieved by simply switching off the "black" pixels)

If money isnt a issue, i would pick OLED aswell.
Personally i got a LED tv, wich i am very happy with.
A bit more expensive than the Plasma and LCD tho. :\

What he says.  For movies on big screens nothing beats plasma, it's much warmer.

And I mean warmer in all senses of the word, after a few hours of watching I have to open a windows even in winter

I have an LED and I've been happy with it.  I've heard that LCD is better..but I don't know personally.

Personally I would steer clear of LCD.
My sister has one and when watching programmes that are on location in sunny climes (things like CSI Miami, Invasion, Lost) then I used to see ghosting and halo like effects around actors/moving objects.

Most distracting.

That's usually not a problem of the panel, but of the glass-plate in front of it.

No one else noticed it  , even after I pointed it out to them when they didn't believe me.
