Topic: Blu ray: Samsung or Sony

Awrighty.I dont actually own a blu ray player yet  .Blockbusters are currently doin a deal on 2 blu ray players.
Samsung BD-D5100
Sony BDP-S185
Both are the same price.I dont kno if any of you own either of them.Any thoughts ? cheerz

As for Sony vs Samsung, IMO you might as well rake in one of the deals on a PS3 right now, and get a gaming system along with it.

If you're after something entry level just to test the waters, Asda are selling some cheap £40 player right now that supposedly stands up with decent £100-150 players.

I dislike Sony (you pay the name only for a so-so product...). At least with the other one you list it's possible to change the region for the DVD reader part (don't get too excited, you can't for the BR reader).

That's not entirely true about Sony. Normally their stand-alone gear is of very high quality, but it's still pricey and it misses certain features, granted like the multi-region/multi-format. Still they make very reliable stuff and the PS3 was made at a loss because of their support for Blu-Ray. Also, I found out fairly recently that some shrewd people are snapping up PS1s from Ebay because the CD player is of an exceptionally high standard, so much so they are being adjusted to be used as stand-alone audio players and considered better than top-level CD units that would cost hundreds.

Please Jon don't make me cry... Sony get that money back by charging non-sense high price to the labels to use the format. By exemple they charge for 3500 copies upfront whatever it is the number printed or not. This isn't for nothing if all the indy label see the format as a waste of money.

The labels still want to use it though, Jimmy.  Sony screwed up Betamax by denying licences to the porn industry and tried the same thing with Blu-Ray. When HD-DVD started to take hold, only then did they relent.

I know many label owners who don't go HD for that exact reason. Except for new out of theatre movie nothing sell enough on Blu-Ray to justified the high road robbery tactic that Sony use. Paying 3500 times the redevances upfront just doesn't make sense when 1000 units is a good seller on Blu-Ray.

I'm talking about the porn studios, Jimmy, not the independent labels you mean. I saw an interview with one that talked specifically about Blu-Ray and how it was them and their kind that tipped the balance. It was Sony who forced the issue by finally allowing them to use it. Sony don't like their formats being used for porn, but they can't ignore it's the biggest seller.

No adult film studio release catalog titles on Blu-Ray and the upfront payment is the reason for this (it was confirm to me by at least two of them). Like I wrote only the new titles are made available on Blu-Ray and you know already I've no respect for movies like Teenage Gang Bang #10 or Grannies Crack Whore 26...

I'm not a fan of Sony at all. Their equipment generally is good but IMO, better can usually be had for the same money.

I really don't care, Jimmy. You said labels, I responded. I know what I meant and I'm not bothered enough for another arse kicking contest. As Sam said, Sony are over priced anyway.

Good way to divert the discussion when you start by trying to make a charity organization of Sony because they sold the PS3 for less than it cost them to produce one. Everbody knows the machine isn't how they do their profit, they make their profit on the format redevances and as I've shown their practices are high road robbery. So don't divert the discussion using non-related arguments because I don't cry a river over the good heart of Sony...

BTW it is a well known fact that Nintendo, Sega and most of the game systems do their money with the licencing and not the hardware who is always sold at lost. It's the exact same thing with the VHS, DVD, Laserdisc or Blu-Ray readers...
