This is something we've been doing over at the Filmspotters Forum for a while and it has been very successful at creating not only discussion, but interest in seeing films by the directors listed. Here's how it works...

A poll is created and you can select up to 5 films that you consider to be that specific director's best work. If you want to be helpful to those who may not know any of the directors work, you can color code the films that you've seen from that director's canon in the associated thread. The color coding is as follows...

GREEN

LIME GREEN

ORANGE

RED

BROWN

 Masterwork

 Good

 Average

 Approach with Caution

 Compost Material (Crap)

I will post a new poll from time to time and if you have a suggestion for a director, then post it in this thread. I hope everyone participates, we have a lot of fun and a good amount of friendly banter with these polls at Filmspotters.

Michael Bay
Danny Boyle

John Carpenter

David Fincher

Alfred Hitchcock

Elia Kazan

David Lean
Sergio Leone

Terence Malick
Hayao Miyazaki

Martin Scorcese
Kevin Smith

Peter Yates

For me, last year's major discoveries of established directors with pretty much their entire work watched were:
Reha Erdem
Julio Medem
Eric Rohmer (not exactly new, but still about half of them seen for the first time)
Andrzej Zulawski

I'm planning to get through Godard and some other Nouvelle Vague directors this year, but so far I'm rather slagging.  :training:

For now, I'm trying to use directors that a broad amount of people here have seen. Down the road, I'll definitely do Rohmer.

He hasn't made many films, he was easy. I dread doing Hawks, Hitchcock or Ford.
