I was looking for a picture of Gigi Egley (Chiana in Farscape), when I came across this review for a film called Last Train to Freo.

And a paragraph struck a chord with me.

Films of plays have to overcome lots of problems of scale. Audiences naturally want movies to supply things they can't get from television, and American television, in particular, supplies some very well-written and acted drama on a nightly basis.

It made me think of Australian films that I have really enjoyed, this led me to think, if I had to name 5 British films what would they be?

Of course I then thought that I'd have to share it with you lot.

So what would they be?

I think if I thought about it I can name 5 easily.

the oine title I will somehow never forget, even 20something years on, is "Rita, Sue and Bob too" Not really a great film, just the title stuck.

Been meaning to reply for a few days, but kept forgetting.

My intention was for people to reccommend 5 films that were made by their home nation.(eg Critter/wom6at = Australia, Achim Taiwan or Germany)

Dead Man's Shoes

I've purposefully picked films that are ingrained in our country. Which is why The Third Man isn't there (set in Vienna, lead character American, etc). Honourable mention for Curse of the Were-Rabbit. Honestly, I can't think of another recent mainstream film that captures so well a section of British society.

Tom, I haven't seen it for years, but I never realised The Never Ending Story was German. I wouldn't be surprised if that is the most universally popular German film then? It was a huge hit and I remember seeing it as a kid. I can't think of any others.

I loved this movie as a kid. It was produced at the Bavaria Film Studios which is fairly near where I am living (also "Das Boot" was made there). Some miniatures are part of the film tour. Also you get to ride Fuchur (Falcor in the English version). It was directed by Wolfgang Peterson before he went to Hollywood. The international version you probably know is a different cut. It is shorter and does away of the excellent original score by Klaus Doldinger and instead uses a dated pop song sung by Limahl.

Not now. I hasten to add, I have grown out of liking Limahl!

I honestly don't believe I have seen enough Australian films to answer this properly.
Some I have enjoyed though are (and these aren't in order).

Well, I don't really know many Taiwanese films, but I definitely think that Yi Yi was a great film.
