You can only play region 2 here if you have a multi-region player and they are very rare, I don't even know someone who has them. Basically I'm stuck with region 4. I think there are some cases where you can play other regions on certain computer DVD players but I'd prefer to have ones I can watch on my TV.

Jon was referring to something that we know from investigating the features of DVDs further, a side effect from using the collection database software DVD Profiler.

We have found that very often DVDs produced in the UK are region coded for region 2 and 4, hence are playable in Europe as well as Australia. Obviously this can only be found out after purchasing the DVD. But when using the software you will benefit from others making this investigation "for you".

I hope I could get this across somehow.

Hmm I've never heard of a DVD that is two different regions and can play here. In the shops here you can't but anything buy region 4, other regions you can only get online.

Absolutely, and in a nice full circle moment, Profiler tells me that Tru Calling is region "2,4"...  ;)  I've bought Region 4 titles before that even label the sleeves with a symbol showing the two regions. In fact, regardless of the sleeves, I've found region 4 to be dual-encoded anyway.

Critter, there are even a handful of dual-encoded DVDs "1,4". There's surely an issue with NTSC versus PAL, but that isn't a concern with "2,4".

It's the same here, but the only one sell in store are region 1. Most readers are already Multizone but lock for the region it will be sold, all you need is the code to unlock your DVD reader and you're ready to watch everything you want.

No need to buy a region free reader for 100$ and more when the one you own is probably already multizone.

Of course it's even more easier on a computer that's why I watch all my dvd on mine. Never replaced my reader when he had stop working.

How do you get the cod to unlock it? Is it even legal? It sounds like when someone puts a chip in their playstation to play burnt games. I checked and all of my DVD's are region 4 only.

Most of the time it's just a serie of command to enter with the remote, just an exemple with my old reader (Philips DVD642)

1. Turn on the player.
2. Open the tray.
3. Press the following sequence on the remote:
7 8 9 OK 0
4. The number 0 will appear on the lower left side of your screen.
5. Your player is now region free! Put in a DVD and enjoy! :)

You just activate something that is lock without modifying the material (contrary of what you do with a Playstation). It is as legal than importing dvd from the others country, so in theory no... but in fact it's a grey zone ;)

I have a Panasonic blu-ray player. Not sure which one but the one they recommend goes with the Vierra which is the tv I have. Do you think it would have something like that?

You can check if your model is there (check the manual of your reader the model is written there), but you have forgot to mention that it was a Blu-Ray reader. I'm not sure if a BR reader can be hacked with a simple code :shrug:

type your model + "region free" into google, maybe you'll find an answer there.

If I filter my collection for purchase items that are flagged region 4, I get 175 which is 18% of my collection and I only have 2 items actually purchased in region 4.

In my collection 617 DVDs are marked as region 4 or region free (thus also playable on R4 players), even though I only have three DVDs imported from Australia.
