Following
| Year: 1999 | 70 min. | United Kingdom

Before he became a sensation with the twisty revenge story Memento, Christopher Nolan fashioned this low-budget, 16 mm black-and-white neonoir with comparable precision and cunning. Supplying irrefutable evidence of Nolan’s directorial bravura, Following is the fragmented tale of an unemployed young writer who trails strangers through London, hoping that they will provide inspiration for his first novel. He gets more than he bargained for when one of his unwitting subjects leads him down a dark criminal path. With gritty aesthetics and a made-on-the-fly vibe (many shots were simply stolen on the streets, unbeknownst to passersby), Following is a mind-bending psychological journey that shows the remarkable beginnings of one of today’s most acclaimed filmmakers.

A Virgin Among the Living Dead
| Year: 1973 | 79 min. | Belgium

Redemption celebrates the life and career of Jess Franco (1930-2013) with a deluxe edition of his mysifying erotic thriller: A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD (Une viege chez les morts vivant). (Christina von Blanc) stars as a woman who journeys to her ancestral home and finds herself surrounded by the restless spirits of her eccentric family—who may or may not be alive.

This disc includes two complete versions of the film: Franco's original cut (CHRISTINA, PRINCESS OF EROTICISM) and the re-release version (A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD), which was expanded to incorporate zombie scenes directed by French horror auteur Jean Rollin (The Living Dead Girl). Also included is the softcore erotic footage shot to create a third version of the film.

The Mist
| Year: 2007 | 126 min. | United States

From legendary frightmaster Stephen King and Academy Award® nominated director Frank Darabont* (The Shawshank Redemption,The Green Mile) comes one of the most tense and terrifying films since The Shining.

*2000 Best Picture and Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published, The Green Mile; 1995 Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, The Shawshank Redemption.

Philadelphia
| Year: 1993 | 125 min. | United States

Philadelphia (1993), widely hailed as Hollywood’s first grand-scale feature film examination of the AIDS crisis, stars Tom Hanks in his Academy Award®-winning performance as Andrew Beckett, a hotshot lawyer well on his way up the corporate ladder. But even as he wins yet another promotion, Andrew is concealing a terrible secret: he is a gay man, suffering from AIDS. When his bosses discover this, he is summarily fired. Andrew summons the strength to fight his own firm, enlisting the aid of a homophobic ambulance-chaser, Joe Miller (Denzel Washington), the only attorney in town who’ll take the case. Superbly directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs), from a screenplay by Ron Nyswaner, and featuring the Oscar®-winning Bruce Springsteen song, “Streets of Philadelphia.”
If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.
-- Thorin Oakenshield
