Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics, a review by RogmeisterSecret Origin: The Story of DC Comics 90 Minutes Written and Directed by Mac Carter Narrated by Ryan Reynolds I just got done watching Secret Origin: The Story of DC Comics. It is 90 minutes and narrated by Ryan Reynolds, who happens to play Green Lantern in the movie currently in production. I was glad that the documentary was not taken over by discussion of the various TV and movie incarnations of the DC super-heroes, though there was some of that, of course. For the most part, though, they concentrated on the comics. Among the people we got to see interviewed were Julius Schwartz, Marv Wolfman (I was shocked at how he looks now!), Len Wein, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Alan Moore, Denny O'Neill, Louise and Walter Simonson, Mike Carlin, Paul Levitz, Karen Berger and others. They even had some older pieces where we got to see and hear Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster (co-creators of Superman) and Bob Kane (creator of Batman). While I enjoyed it...I would have liked even more. I wish they could give us more insight into the Golden Age as they mostly concentrated on the big 3 of that era: Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. But I did enjoy what we got. I may have to look now for other comic book documentaries. I should get hold of a copy of Comic Book Confidential...especially since I was still reading comics back at the time that was originally done. (From Roger's Random Reviews on November 13th, 2010) JCVD, a review by RichTitle: JCVD Runtime:96 Certificate:15 Year:2008 Genres:Action Plot:My Review: Awful self-indulgent Van-Damme film, this actor has not made a decent film for several years and this rates down at the bottom of the heap. The idea to promote JCVD as a vehicle to demonstrate the leads serious acting skills backfires, it becomes a slow and boring film heavy with dialogue, with a jumbled and disjointed plot, clumsy supporting characters, and uncomfortable soul revealing scenes. The few action scenes are miserably bad, and it looks like this 'star' has fallen to the level of Seagal in his later years. Damme shame. The only decent part of watching this dvd was having a listen to the dubbed audio, which sounded like a pack of Inspector Clouseau's doing hammy French accents - very funny. My Rating (From DCO third annual November Alphabet Marathon - discussion/review/banter thread on November 8th, 2009) The One Where It All Began: The Pilot Marathon, a review by DJ DoenaFriends What's the show about? A group of mid-20 New Yorkers lives in close proximity and spends much time either at Monica's or at the nearby coffee house "Central Perk". We see how their life developes until the mid-30s. "The Pilot" or "The One Where Monica Gets A Roommate" Ross' wife has just moved out because she found out that she's a lesbian and Ross is devastated. The others (Monica, Phoebe, Chandler and Joey) try to chear him up but then Rachel steps in their life (again) who has just left her to-be-husband at the altar. My Opinion As I said before I love that show and I will re-watch it definitively this year. (From The One Where It All Began: The Pilot Marathon on January 5th, 2008) |
