Airport 1975, a review by GSyren

TitleAirport 1975 (Disc ID: 1879-BE87-1B75-8D9E)
DirectorJack Smight
ActorsCharlton Heston, Karen Black, George Kennedy, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., Susan Clark
Produced1974 in United States
Runtime106 minutes
AudioEnglish Dolby Digital Mono
SubtitlesEnglish
OverviewThe nail-biting action continues continues when a Boeing 747 collides mid-air with a small private plane during a cross-country flight. Now without a captain and first officer, it's up to the senior flight attendant (Karen Black) to pilot the crippled plane to safety with the help of Alan Murdock (Charlton Heston) and Joe Patroni (George Kennedy).
My thoughtsWell, Airport 1975 is a movie of its time. Disaster movies were at its most popular, and the 1970 Airport had been a big hit, so the time was ripe for a sequel. So, pack an airplane full of semi celebrity actors, pack a script full of cliches, and go for it.

It would be an exaggeration to say that Airport 1975 is a good movie. It's not. But it's not really a bad movie either. Technically it's very well executed. And it's a fun ride. But the script drags it down. The bit with the sick kid (Linda Blair) and the singing nun (Helen Reddy) is just too much.

I saw this on opening night in Stockholm (Jan 13, 1975, if IMDb is to be trusted). It seemed pretty exciting at the time. Now, 39 years later, not quite so much. What impressed me most now is how they managed to shoot the opening sequence in Dulles Airport. They must have closed off half the airport. I'd like to see anyone getting permission to shoot a movie like that today. But of course with today's technology they wouldn't have to.

No, Airport 1975 hasn't aged well. But it's still kind of fun to watch. Not a total loss. Recommended for disaster nerds.

The Lone Ranger (2013), a review by Dragonfire

The Lone Ranger

I've been wanting to see this one for a while.  A big reason is because of Johnny Depp, but I also thought the trailers looked interesting.  I went to see the movie on Wednesday and I really enjoyed it.  I'd go see it again and I'll add it to my movie collection once it is available.

The movie is a little different from what I expected, but I really liked it.  The movie shows how John becomes the Lone Ranger and how he first meets Tonto, who is really behind him becoming the Lone Ranger.  Tonto isn't just a sidekick following along.  He is more of an equal and some of what happens is directly tied to him and his decisions.  He also has a dead bird on his head, which is kind of odd at first, but there is an explanation eventually that I think makes sense.  There is a method to his madness that I think works.  The story is interesting and entertaining.  It is a fun adventure movie that is worth checking out.

There is a decent amount of action that involves chases, trains, and explosions.  Real trains were used and stunt men were used..stuff wasn't done strictly with CGI.  The action scenes work well.  There is also a good amount of humor, something that some people may not expect.  I think it works for the movie.  The characters are interesting.  Cavendish, the villain, is evil in a way I didn't expect and he makes a good villain.  Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp work together well and I liked both of them in their parts.

The Lone Ranger is a fun adventure movie that is entertaining and deserves to be seen.  I would have rated it 4.5 stars at Epinions.  Since I can't do that there, I rounded it up to 5.

Smallville Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 7: Disc 5

17. SLEEPER
Agent Double Uh-Oh: Government agents coerce Jimmy into spying on Chloe because of her suspicious computer activities. Kara sends a strange message to Clark... from Krypton. Lex finally obtains and opens the doubvle-keyed safe-deposit box.

My Thoughts:
Interesting episode. Not  100% sure how much I liked it. There was things I liked about it as well as things I didn't. But over all I think I enjoyed it well enough to say it is an above average episode.

My Rating:

18. APOCALYPSE

My Thoughts:
Another interesting epiosde. Like many series has... this is an "alternate world"... "what if I never came to be" type story. I think they did a pretty good job on it. I like the way they explained all his friends having a good life at first... making him think the world is better without him.

My Rating:

19. QUEST
A strange attacker from Zurich strikes again, this time leaving mysterious Kryptonian symbols carved into Lex's chest. Clark connects the symbols to a cathedral in Montreal... and meets grave peril when he arrives there.

My Thoughts:
I really am starting to tire of the whole Veritas arc. It has always been my least favorite arc of the series... though I can enjoy the episodes. This one while not bad... continuing the storyline I don't care for much brought it down a bit.

My Rating:

20. ARCTIC
Is Kara really Kara? If not, who is she? Will Jimmy be Lex's lap dog? Or will he stand up to the blackmail? Will Lana be Clark's forever love? Or will she be forever gone? Will Lex accept the truth he finally discovers? If not, will it push him into madness?

My Thoughts:
This is a good conclusion to the season. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Of course it leaves us with cliffhangers for the cast just like the previous years. So now I am kinda looking forward to starting my season 8 set.

My Rating:

Over-all Season 7 Thoughts
While not my favorite season... it has some good episodes. I could have went without the whole Veritas storyline. But over all it is worth adding to your collection.
