There's No Business Like Show Business, a review by Danae CassandraThere's No Business Like Show Business Year of Release: 1954 Directed By: Walter Lang Starring: Ethel Merman, Donald O'Connor, Marilyn Monroe, Dan Dailey, Johnnie Ray, Mitzi Gaynor Genre: Comedy, Romance, Musical Overview: Marilyn plays an ambitious showgirl who gets involved in the lives and loves of the Five Donahues, a family of Vaudeville performers. My Thoughts: While this is remembered today as a Marilyn Monroe film, she's in the supporting cast here. This is Ethel Merman's film and she is great in her role. Sure the plot is standard and pretty predictable, but the numbers are a lot of fun and everyone gives a good performance. Yes, Monroe does stand out of the supporting cast, and for the reasons she usually does - her beauty and charisma are evident the moment you see her. "Tropical Heat Wave" is her standout number here, and if you're a fan of hers you won't want to miss it. The film itself might have stood for a bit of editing, but overall it was a lot of fun and I'd recommend it if you enjoy musicals. Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1 Audio: English: Dolby Digital: 5.1, French: Dolby Digital: 5.1, Commentary: Dolby Digital: 2-Channel Stereo Subtitles: English, Spanish Stars: Meryl Streep Philip Seymour Hoffman Amy Adams Viola Davis Alice Drummond Plot:Extras: Scene Access Audio Commentary Featurettes Closed Captioned My Thoughts: A scandal hitting a church... who'd of thought! Another fine example of how one person's speculations can snowball into an avalanche of accusations. I particularly enjoyed Father Flynn's sermon on rumors. This can be a bit slow at times and it does leave you asking some questions when it is over but it is fascinating to watch how a few slips of the tongue can cause events to spiral out of control. Meryl Streep and Phillip Seymour Hoffman give excellent performances. I wonder if Amy Adams is wearing anything under that habit... Stars: Johnny Galecki as Leonard Hofstadter Jim Parsons as Sheldon Cooper Kaley Cuoco as Kaley Cuoco Simon Helberg as Howard Wolowitz Kunal Nayyar as Rajesh Koothrappali Mayim Bialik as Amy Melissa Rauch as Bernadette My Thoughts: Well that is it. I already finished watching this set. Another great season filled with laugh out loud moments. I really couldn't suggest this series high enough. I feel safe in saying this show is my favorite current sitcom... if not my all-time favorite sitcom. I always find it so easy to watch this show. No matter how long ago I seen the episode before. Matter of fact (while I am not going to do it... I could easily start at season 1 again now.... and re-watch all 6 seasons again. This season while probably not my favorite season... is definitely up there... a must see!My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From Addicted2dvd's Random TV Series Watched on September 12th, 2013) |
