Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, a review by snowcat(From Emma's Film Reviews (snowcat) on October 13th, 2009) Harper, a review by AntaresHarper (1966) 2.5/5 - As good an actor as Paul Newman was in his lifetime, he sure did act in some truly subpar films. At times, I thought I was watching an amalgamation of a bad episode of Jack Webb's Dragnet, mixed with a healthy dose of Mannix machismo. Johnny Mandel's score for this film almost sounds as if it was lifted from one of these shows too. What really surprised me, was the fact that with such an all star cast of A list actors, that most of them were sleepwalking through their roles. Only Newman and Robert Webber seem to be invested totally in their characters. Janet Leigh supplies the same window dressing type character she portrayed in The Manchurian Candidate, while Lauren Bacall and Shelley Winters played their usual stereotypical roles of that time. The former as the acerbic shrew of a wife, while the latter played her usual drunken floozy. I swear, if I had been playing a drinking game, and had taken a shot every time I murmured Oh my God while watching this, I would have died of alcohol poisoning by the end. Thank God that Newman would rebound with Cool Hand Luke the following year, because this was a very forgettable film. My Thoughts: This season had a slow start, but it turned out great again. This is the season where Steve Carell left the show towards the end. The storyline they have given him to write him out of the show was the right way to go.Also Ricky Gervais finally made two cameo appearances this season as David Brent. In the first he ran across Michael Scott and was joking with him. The second was a Video CV where he applies for the manager job after Michael Scott left. I would have liked him interacting with the complete Office cast though. Will Ferrell had a few episodes where he had taken over from Michael. He did a good job. Sadly Pam and Jim didn't get a good storyline this season. I always liked their scenes together.
