I do something similar to the first choice every year... What I do is my 25 Days of Christmas Marathon... because in my view once Christmas day is over... it is over for me. And I watch at least 1 Movie/TV Show Episode/Special per day till Christmas day... but I never get numbers as high as I do for Halloween as I don't have as many Christmas shows as I do Horror Movies  :P

So that is how I will be doing it... just like I do every year. :)

To anyone who has just joined us from the link I posted at Invelos here is the link to the thread where you will post you list of watched/watching movies. http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,551.0.html

This thread is for discussing them (and for Richie to  :redcard: us when we get behind  :tease: )

I don't think I'll be joining this one.  I was never really a fan of Christmas movies so I only have one and my budget doesn't allow me to buy 30 DVD's right now.

I do not have many Christmas movies either. This is why I will join Full Christmas Marathon (B):

I don't have all that many Christmas movies either (though I do have a lot more then one)... but I have enough Christmas episodes of TV Series to get me through every day of the month if I wanted to!  :P So maybe you have enough with TV Show episodes?

Or just use some extremely imaginative linking to achieve the full or even the half marathon - any actor/actresses in a film called Noel/Holly,Ivy etc etc, films set around christmas, titles of 25 or 25th, it should get your imaginative juices flowing to see how obscure the link can be  ;)

I don't know what you all use to select your titles for this marathon, but I've decided to use Tom's CCViewer, as I did previously. It's really great, you should take a look.

By the way, Tom, is it possible that there is a bug in the import function, especially regarding Collection Numbers?

I've reassigned quite a few collection numbers recently in DVD Profiler, but your CCViewer, even after reimporting the XML data, doesn't seem to update the collection number correctly. I have quite a few numbers that don't match anymore, even after reimporting the same XML file a few times. It reflects correctly on my phpdvdprofiler site, but not in CCViewer. For example, online, Berserk: 6.God's Hand has a collection number of 1246, but in CCViewer it doesn't have any, which was the case before I did some reassignments.

Could it be, that you have "Settings->Auto-lock quick edits" enabled and did edit the collection number on tab "Details"? When you right-click there on the collection number, does it show up as locked?

This one's an easy one for me. I have a Christmas tag. When I filter using it the result is 45 movies.  (Of course this counts Die Hard and Die Hard II  )

Here is the SQL-Query for the CCViewer I use for this marathon:
SELECT p.ProfileID, p.Title, p.ColNo, p.SortTitle, p.Originaltitle, p.OriginalSortTitle, p.Description FROM Profiles p WHERE (p.Title LIKE '$Title begins/ends with$*' OR p.OriginalTitle LIKE '$Title begins/ends with$*' OR p.Title LIKE '*$Title begins/ends with$' OR p.OriginalTitle LIKE '*$Title begins/ends with$') AND ColType = 'Owned' ORDER BY SortTitle;

After saving it in "Tools->SQL Queries" it is also available as a filter under the collection list.

Pretty much same thing here... but I have 2 tags... one for Christmas Movies (20) not including Die Hard 1 & 2  :P and one for Christmas Episodes (70).

No. I've never edited anything right from CCViewer. I always do the changes in DVDP and import the XML.

I've also verified if it's locked, and it's not.

I think I know what the problem is. Beginning with version 1.5.0 I am comparing the LastEdited and ProfileTimestamp when importing the collection file and skip the profiles where both haven't changed (makes the import much faster). Profiler does not set change any of those timestamps when reassigning collection numbers and thus those profiles are not updated in the Viewer.
To force an update on all profiles, execute the SQL-Query "Reset ProfileTimeStamp" before importing (available via File->Update->Other Data->SQL_TomGaines.xml).

same here Tom  :(

I just used the filter functions in DVD Profiler, ie christmas, xmas, festive etc etc anywhere in title or overview and got over 100 hits.
Decided to only watch unseen films or tv episodes for this function, with the odd exception which is ritual crimbo viewing  :-[

To force an update on all profiles, execute the SQL-Query "Reset ProfileTimeStamp" before importing (available via File->Update->Other Data->SQL_TomGaines.xml).
Nice, it worked!

But as a workaround to this, that wouldn't make every profile be updated, couldn't you do a CRC/MD5 hash check on the profile, and if they differ, update?

That would be a database change to save the checksum for that profile. And if I change something via the Viewer, the checksum has to be reset (to make it possible to revert fields if they have not been locked). Currently I think the only personal data I have forgotten to always update is the Collection Number. Maybe I will implement your idea for the next version. Thanks for the tip!

Anyone else getting on board the xmas marathon - the clock is ticking for Saturday start.

Hopefully we can get a few stragglers to do the half marathon this time round?

I've spoken about this at work, poking around to gauge interest. Well, it turned out into a full blown movie marathon among colleagues! (it's only 15-20 movies, but still!)

So what I did is ask them to send me the list of movie they plan on watching, and I'll create a poster that we'll put in the cafeteria (we tried for the reception, but it didn't fly too well with the bosses, even though 1 of them is participating), with cover scans and people can then put whatever they wish to mark it as read (push pins, stars, check marks, etc). We'll see how it turns out!

I am not even going to reserve a spot in the other thread. There is no way I will manage to watch 31 movies during December...

...and I don't really want to either. For once I have several days planned for other stuff already and I also need to get going to arrange the new computer (organizing the files, getting accustomed to the new software a little more). So, I'll watch as much as I can, but no way up to 31. I have seen it doesn't have to be Christmas movies after all, which wouldn't have been easy for me, but still...

I'll join again in February. In January I am going to Germany for 2 weeks, without my DVDs, but in February, then I have a week holiday! (Chinese New Year) :yahoo:

You could reserve your spot, and do a half-marathon  ;) or option C

12 DVDS of Christmas (C)...
Watch 12 films or TV episodes linked directly to Christmas

Richie, I see you gave "The Escape Clause" a 2/10. That's a pretty low score!

When I watched it last week I didn't expect much, but even at that I was pretty disappointed. The first one was really good. The 2nd at least had a good story. This one just looked as though they were making it up as they went along. There were very few parts where I even chuckled. Another series of movies that should have ended at two, although I'm sure they made a boatload of cash on it and that's all that mattered.

And one more comment:
(click to show/hide)

Probably would have rated it a 3 or 4 though had I included it in my marathon last month (was sandbaggin it in case I needed to pull one out for this month :bag: ). Although looking at my ratings I guess most of my stuff is high, even if I didn't like it that much. Hmmmm... time to re-evaluate

I have gotten a good start on my Christmas marathon. I started with 2 of my all time favorites; Rudolph and Frosty. I rated them both as a 10, generous I know but I can’t help it I love them. They make me happy and I look forward to seeing them every year.

The third movie I watched was The Polar Express. Although I did enjoy it I’m afraid I was disappointed. The interesting thing is that my disappointment related to some of the topics we’ve discussed in these forums, Tom Hanks in particular.

This might be the first film that Tom Hanks did that I saw him instead of the character(s) he is portraying. Whoever designed the animation made the main character look too much like Tom; it was eerily life like, so much so all I could see was Tom Hanks.

This was a major mistake as far as I am concerned. I think the movie should have designed the character another way; for example I liked Tom Hanks in Toy Story because I saw Woody as Woody.

What makes this so sad is that I really enjoyed the rest of the movie; the visual effects, story line and general feel of the movie was great. But… :'(

I've never seen The Polar Express, because I don't like the clips of the animation. Reviews comment on the "dead eyes" and I agree. It seems to leave it cold and creepy, going against the intentions of the story and leaving you with no choice but to focus on Tom Hanks.

I have started the first day of the marathon with 6!! movies. Just to get a good start to be able to watch 31 movies this month
I am even watching "Les Douze travaux d'Astérix" a second time now. As a DVD bonus, each Asterix movie has an extra audio track (on the German release) with the movie dubbed in a different German dialect. This movie (my favorite of all Asterix movies) is dubbed in my native Bavarian  :thundergod:

That sounded interesting, so I checked... I have 3 movies and maybe 4 TV episodes that are directly linked with Christmas (well, with "Christmas" in the Overview) :bag: I guess I could find 2 or 3 more if I looked hard, but still not enough. (I'll take a deeper look, as 12 sounds like a fair number and would give me something to do on the actual holidays, after work :stars:)

I'm off and running as well. Last night I watched a movie that was not going to be included in this. It was called "Hot Rod" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0787475/) starring Saturday Night Live's Adam Sandburg. Going in I knew it would be pretty bad so I was not disappointed

ALmost at the very end Ebenezer Scrooge pops his head out of a window with a Christmas goose, so I guess this one counts!  :hysterical:

BTW - I've added a rating scale to my list. Should help me rate things properly. Suggestions are welcomed as to modifications on it (before we get too far along). Perhaps we could come up with our own DVDC Online "official" ratings so we're all on the same page?

Today was Boys Town (Spencer Tracy and Mickey Rooney). Classic Christmas movie that I've never seen. Not sure what I expected...  :-\ I enjoyed it.

Also watched Elf. This is a must for anyone who likes Christmas movies. Will Ferrell is incredible at playing Buddy. His childlike innocence is fantastic. Even if you don't like Will Ferrell movies this check this one out. Good story, good cast. You might even jerk a tear at the end (I always do  :-[ )

I've only seen short bits on TV the other day (when the kids get on the train at he beginning), and I had a sort of creepy feeling watching it. I read something about the "dead eyes" in this movie, could be it, but since I've not yet seen the whole movie, I wouldn't know, but something felt odd watching those 10-15 minutes of the movie.

That being said, yesterday, I finally found time to start this new marathon: I watched Hero and Guess Who. Ok, both are not exactly Christmas movie, but I don't really like Christmas movie  :bag:

Hero. Good movie, great visuals and fight scenes. I always get lost in the story though, must be the dubbing (yes, I know, I know Watch the subs! The subs! You heretic!. Overall I like the movie, but something is missing to make it truly great IMO.

Guess Who. I like that comedy. Lighthearted, fun, plenty of funny awkward moments. And Zoe Saldana?  :drooling:

Today was Avalon.

I like that movie. It is very slow paced, showing a bleak future. But even though I like that movie, a lot, it is either pure cinematic genius that completely escapes me, or, I'm simply too dumb to understand it. Either way, the imagery is nice, the concepts are great, but the whole didn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Oh and the soundtrack is awesome! Really, Kenji Kawai is a name I'll keep an eye out for.

Tonight was The Night Listener with Robin Williams.

I love Robin Williams, for humour of course, but even more when he's doing more serious, dramatic roles, and here, it is completely dramatic. That being said, I'm on the fence about this movie. You've got a nice cast, a great starting idea, which happens to be based on a real life event, but somewhere along the line, something went wrong. It is built like a thriller, yet failed to keep the tension going through the whole movie. The actors are fine in their roles. I really can't put my finger on what went wrong, but something wasn't right. Maybe another viewing is in order and would shed some light, but as it stands, I think The Night Listener is a good movie, that failed to deliver.

A couple of oldies again today

Christmas in Connecticut (1945). Good enough. Not something that will be on the "must watch" list every year but I will certainly watch it again.

A Christmas Carol (1938). I had never seen this version. Guess what, it was just like the rest  Looking forward to my anual viewing of the best version of "A Christmas Carol" - "Scrooged"  :hysterical: Probably will be soon.

Not sure what's up next.  :hmmmm: I'll have to see what catches my eye when I go look.

Whats the film you have in your collection called Father Christmas? No actors or scans to give me a clue  :weep:

Looks like I have a contribution to make

IMDB Link (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180691/)  It's an 25 minute animated story by Raymond Briggs, who also did "The Snowman" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084701/) (which I liked). Bought them both last year for a couple of bucks at Best Buy. I do like the style of animation on them.

Not sure I'll even watch it. One of those things we have on hand for when we get little visitors (nieces and/or nephews). It's a 25 minute cartoon about Santa taking a vacation so I don't see myself going out of my way to watch it.

No wonder you're asking already. At the pace you are watching your Xmas marathon, you could probably pull a double, easily!  :tease:

But yeah, I'm curious too, what is planned for January?

The real reason I am asking: I have problems fitting in the movies I'd like to watch and it would be helpful to know, which movies can fit into next month's marathon. E.g. I had the urge today to start watching the Back to the Future trilogy. I can fit the first two into this month's marathon. I do not have any idea how to fit in the last one

What I was thinking of was a 'THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE'   January Marathon

This would be a marathon viewing titles either true, or based on, true stories or events. It is amazing how many in your collections will qualify.
To include documentaries to diversify the watching pattern available.

3 targets for participants;

Half marathon - 13 titles (13 miles)
Full marathon - 26 titles (26 miles)
Iron man  - 42 titles (42 kms)  :training:

For February I had the idea of a LINKED MARATHON

That would be where the next title you watched in the marathon, had to begin with the last letter of the previous title watched.
ie Back To The Future, followed by Eragon, followed by Night of the Living Dead etc etc

This would make it a pretty flexible marathon for viewing content.

Would everyone prefer this for January?

Starting point could be an overview search with DVDP for the words 'true' 'based' 'fact' etc

Of course there is also IMDB keywords;

Keywords (Partial Matches) (Displaying 7 Results) 1. true-crime (1122 titles - Bowling for Columbine (2002), ...)
 2. true-love (868 titles - Shrek (2001), ...)
 3. true-life-adventure (678 titles - Into the Wild (2007), ...)
 4. true-story (649 titles - Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story (2005), ...)
 5. dream-comes-true (186 titles - "Fantasy Island" (1978), ...)
 6. based-on-supposedly-true-story (171 titles - Fargo (1996), ...)
 7. true-confessions-magazine (9 titles - The Affairs of Martha (1942), ...)

I never thought much of Will Ferrell (and I didn't like Elf), but I changed my mind after watching Winter Passing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380817/), an indie drama, where he also co-stars with Zooey Deschanel. But be warned, that's no Christmas movie, it starts out pretty depressing, although it moves to a somewhat "happier" end. Also: dead kitten alert.

I had also thought of the letter linking thingy, but also wasn't sure if that wouldn't make us a very limited range of titles in our collection.

The "star linking" crossed my mind as well.  But, why define what/who a star is? If they link in DVD profiler would be good enough for me. Bonus points for those who can finish with the same person they started with. :)

As I am not available (for the Marathon) in January I'd like to have one of the above two elected for February ;D

I recently watched:

The Love Letter (http://german.imdb.com/title/tt0140340/)
A nice TV movie. The "letters sent through time" idea was later used in The Lake House.

The Munsters' Scary Little Christmas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Munsters%27_Scary_Little_Christmas)
Horrible! Without the great duo of Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis, the Munsters have lost all their charm.

Back to the Future (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_future)
One of my all-time favorite movies!

Charlie's Angels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie%27s_Angels_%28film%29)
Not bad. But I remembered it to be more fun.

Yesterday was "Surviving Christmas" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0252028/) with Ben Affleck, James Gandolfini, Christina Applegate and Catherine O'Hara. It was entertaining enough. I don't expect much out of a lot of my Christmas movies. Just a laugh or two and maybe a tear or two. This is one I'll probably watch every few years is all, but will watch it again.

Also watched "Jingle all the Way" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116705/) with Arnold Schwarzenegger & Sinbad. Anyone who has kids and has been on the hunt for 'this years' toy can relate with this movie, although they do take it to the extreme. Again, enjoyable enough.

I finally got to watch Elf for the first time. I really enjoyed this movie; Rick summed up my feelings quite well. I didn't know what to expect but I'm glad I saw it. I particularly enjoyed seeing Bob Newhart, one of my all time favorites, as Papa Elf.

Although I had seen this many many times before, I decided to watch the 1966 version of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas (or should that just be How the Grinch Stole Christmas?!?). I love this movie and try to watch it every year.

I then decided I had to see Jim Carrey as the Grinch. I think Jim Carrey is wonderful; I’ve loved him since In Living Color. He might be one of my favorite comedians so of course I liked this movie.

The only problem now is I’ve had the music from these last two movies playing in my head since I watched them! “You’re a mean one Mister Grinch…” aaaggghhhhh

Recently, I've watched The Nightmare Before Christmas (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107688/), Little Women (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110367/) and Monty Python and the Holy Grail (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071853/).

So first was Nightmare Before Christmas. Well, I'm biased on this one. It is a Tim Burton movie, and I like pretty much everything he did/will do (can't wait for Sweeney Todd (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408236/)!), also, it is stop motion animation, and I have a soft spot for that. The whole idea of the Halloween world, wanting to organize a Christmas event is great. Great musical numbers, rounded out by a nice story and great character design. We have a winner!

Next up, was Little Women. The actresses are good in their respective roles, with Winona Ryder as cute as ever. A classic story, well told.

This morning was Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Well, where to start. I liked it, it has its charms and some genius moments. But as a whole? It didn't keep me fully interested the whole time. Was it way too high expectations? I kept hearing from people how good it is, and I had never seen it before. Do I simply not "get" British humour? I don't know, might not be my cup of tea, but then I loved The Office, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and I know I love Red Dwarf. I don't know, something didn't work, but I'll give it another view sometime, I may appreciate it more then.

Oh, I forgot one. I also watched Kingdom of Heaven (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0320661/).

It is a great, epic story. The images are gorgeous, well filmed. The music is awesome, a great mix of genres. The actors were great. So what was missing? Well, for one, it was a bit long. Clocking in at 194 minutes (I watched the Director's Cut), there are times when not much is happening, and I found myself losing interest. But once it picks up, it is awesome. The fight scenes are well played. The final defense of Jerusalem at the end of the movie is great too, you believe it may actually have happened that way. The action can sometimes be brutal, but in the context of the film, it fits. All in all, a great movie.

Tonight was Big Fish (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319061/)

What do you know, another Tim Burton movie. And guess what? Yes, I loved it. The film is beautiful. I won't go into too much details, as I don't want to ruin it for anybody, but suffice to say that the whoel concept of the movie is great. How everything is tied together is really wonderful. Tonight was at least the third time I saw this movie, but I remember the first time I saw it, the story unfolding before my eyes, how we keep going from reality to flashbacks of Ed Bloom's past, the story of Ed Bloom slowly being told, add to that the Tim Burton touch, and you have the main ingredients for a great movie. And this one, to me, is a homerun. An out of the ballpark homerun.

Hence why most of the Christmas music I listen to is not from mainstream people. For instance: Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass Band, etc.

I also have some CD that are by Wind/Brass bands, with arrangements by Jan Van der Roost for example. Makes for a much needed change in pace regarding Xmas music.

After the hockey game last night I couldn't sleep so I caught up on a few movies. I  watched Ice Age, Ice Age: The Meltdown and March of the Penguins.

I'm a sucker for animation so of course I loved both of these. I had seen Ice Age before but I had to watch it again before seeing part 2. I like Ray Romano but my favorite character is Sid; John Leguizamo is terrific. Scrat's pretty cool too.

March of the Penguins was wonderful too.  I had heard this version was totally different than the original La Marche de l'empereur. Morgan Freeman was perfect as the narrator and I can't imagine the film without him. Has anyone seen them both?
