The Witchmaker (1969), a review by JimmyMOVIE / DVD INFO: Title: The Witchmaker (1969) Genre: Horror Director: William O. Brown Rating: Not Rated Length: 1h39 Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1 Audio: English Subtitles: None Stars: Anthony Eisley Thordis Brandt Alvy Moore Shelby Grant Tony Benson Plot: Dr. Ralph Hayes (Alvy Moore) is a professor of paranormal studies who leads a group into the Louisiana swamp to investigate a string of murders. His student Tasha (Thordis Brandt) is the psychic whose powers have been inherited from her witch ancestors. Hayes believes that witchcraft is the reason behind the murders of the young women, and reporter Victor Gordon (Anthony Eisley) is out to cover the story. The trail eventually leads to Luther the Berserk (John Lodge) a sorcerer of incredible powers who, after drinking the blood of his victims, has the ability to raise the dead as his unholy army of the night. The efforts of the human researchers collide with the supernatural forces of evil in this terrifying feature. My Thoughts: Back to better film This one is one I already know well before buying the Code Red release in april, so I known already what to expect before starting it. What I didn't expect is how it will look great!!! This is probably one of the best use of the shadow I've ever seen in a movie, great lightning works by John Arthur Morrill the DP of this film. This film is the genre of film that make you think and don't throw everything in your face (sometimes it's a good thing sometimes not, depend of what you watch). Of course some could say that it moves slowly but not me, I like how the story is developped. John Lodge who play the berseker (some kind of Devil servant) do a really good job and he sure looks creepy. The cast isn't filled with big names, but everybody act well. Also it was interesting, at least for me it was, to see Patricia Wymer (The Babysitter), Sue Bernard (Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!), Nancy Crawford (The Thrill Killers) and Diane Webber (the most popular pin-up girl of the fifties and the sixties) showing in small role. Also be prepare for a nice ending... This film was produce by L.Q. Jones (you can see him in many Sam Peckinpah's movies) who will produce and direct six years later one of the greatest cult movie ever made. This film being of course A Boy and His Dog L.Q. Jones is present on this release for an interview and a great commentary track with John Arthur Morrill. Rating : (From Jimmy's - 2011 Ooctober Horror Marathon on October 2nd, 2011) What Price Hollywood?, a review by AntaresWhat Price Hollywood? (1932) 3.5/5 - A Pre-Code precursor to both A Star is Born and Sunset Blvd. about a waitress who is discovered by a famous director and catapulted to stardom, all the while the director's career is fading. What makes this pre-code work is Lowell Sherman's performance as the washed up director, and the realism in the story about what Hollywood fame does to him. Just two years later a film like this could have never been made and stayed true to its story. Clocking in at a quick 88 minutes, we get a view of Hollywood that would be white washed just a few years later at the hands of the Breen Office. This is my second film starring Constance Bennett and its a shame that her career was so reminiscent of a shooting star. She definitely had a good screen presence and had enough moxie to make her roles interesting. (From Antares' Short Summations on April 16th, 2012) Smallville Marathon, a review by addicted2dvdSeason 2: Disc 5: EPISODE 17: ROSETTA Determined to find out where he came from, Clark travels to New York to meet Dr. Virgil Swann (Christopher Reeve), a brilliant scientist who possesses a message for Clark from his home planet. My Thoughts: Another really good episode... but then how could you not like an episode of Christopher Reeve in it? I loved that homage to the Superman movies by having a clip of the Superman theme playing in the background. EPISODE 18: VISITOR Perhaps Clark is not alone on Planet Earth. A student with unusual interests and powers believes he's an alien - and he wants Clark to help him return to his far-off home world. My Thoughts: An OK episode... nothing really special here. EPISODE 19: PRECIPICE Clark must do community service and his family is slapped with a lawsuit after he roughs up men who hassled Lana. Lex tries to protect Helen from a deranged former boyfriend. My Thoughts: Again a decent episode ... nothing too special... other then it being the first episode where Lana starts to learn self defense. I have to admit though... I don't care much for the new sheriff. EPISODE 20: WITNESS Thugs who dain enormous strength by inhaling kryptonite mist leave Clark feeling powerless when they attack Jonathan and Martha. Lionel has a manipulative offer for Chloe. My Thoughts: This is a good episode... I enjoyed it. This is the start of a little feud between Clark and Chloe... which I don't care for... and it goes further then it should of... but it does make for a good storyline.
