The Tingler, a review by GSyren

TitleThe Tingler (043396-077799)
DirectorWilliam Castle
ActorsVincent Price, Judith Evelyn, Darryl Hickman, Patricia Cutts, Pamela Lincoln
Produced1959 in United States
Runtime82 minutes
AudioEnglish Dolby Digital Mono, Spanish Dolby Digital Mono
SubtitlesChinese, English, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, Thai
OverviewVincent Price stars as an obsessed doctor who discovers that fear manifests itself as a parasitic creature, which grows on the spinal cords of terrified people. If they scream, the Tingler can be destroyed. If they don't, it will sever the spinal column and kill them. He successfully isolates and removes the Tingler from a deaf mute (Judith Evelyn) who has been scared to death by her devious husband. Once captured, the Tingler escapes and runs amok in a crowded movie theater. Terror is loose, but can it be stopped?

THE TINGLER is legendary horror director William Castle's magnum opus. After the success of HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, Castle devised a new gimmick called "Percepto" for THE TINGLER. Participating theaters would wire seats so that random moviegoers would get a tangible electric shock during climactic moments in the film. Another novelty used to maximum effect is the short color sequence depicting blood pouring from a faucet and filling a bathtub. Castle went on to direct more cult classics like HOMICIDAL and 13 GHOSTS and later produced the mainstream hit ROSEMARY'S BABY.
My thoughtsWilliam Castle was a showman, and to properly appreciate films like The Tingler

Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion, a review by Danae Cassandra

Gamera 2: Attack of the Legion
Year of Release: 1996
Directed By: Shusuke Kaneko
Starring: Akiji Kobayashi, Toshiyuki Nagashima, Miki Mizuno, Tamotsu Ishibashi
Genre: Action, Science-Fiction, Tokusatsu, Kaiju

Overview:
Ten thousand years ago, an advanced civilization created the Gyaos to eliminate rampant pollution. However, the Gyaos grew stronger, started breeding and began feasting on humans. For protection, the Gameras were created to fend off the attacks. The onslaught of the Gyaos was eventually halted, and they were forced into hibernation. Despite the best efforts of its people, the advanced civilization was ruined. So, the scientists preserved the last remaining Gamera and bequeathed him to the next civilization, should the Gyaos ever return.

A new threat involving extraterrestrials hoping to colonize on Earth requires Gamera to ward off insect-like alien soldiers dubbed "Legion."

My Thoughts:
Just as good as Guardian of the Universe.  Gamera looks awesome here, and Legion is a bad-ass kaiju foe.  Seriously, the design for the Legion and its Queen are really great.  Possibly the best designed foe for Gamera thus far and the biggest threat.  The human story isn't quite as developed as GotU but the spread of the Legion and the reactions of the people are pretty realistic.  I like that the 90's films don't make the humans so stupid and useless as the Showa era ones did.   If you're new to kaiju films and not into cheese, these are totally the Gamera films to watch.  They're also the ones to watch if you're not new to kaiju.  Really looking forward to the third one.

Bechdel Test: Pass

Overall: 3.5/5
