Title: Jimmy's 2009 Horror Marathon
Post by: Jimmy on September 28, 2009, 02:43:34 AM
It's this time of the year again when we all go back to our teenage years and go crazy for any frightening creatures. This year I've decided to go for the low budget horror, sometimes an Italian or Asian title will appear since I see them as low budget also (in fact, except for the Hollywood productions most of the horror films are low budget).

My number from last year is 50, I think I will kick this last year number in the nuts and beat the crap out of it easilly :training:

I've decided to let DVDP decide the movie I will watch using the "movie pick" feature.

DVDP had decided that I will start it thursday with Cinderella a South Korean's movie made in 2006

Title : Cinderella (2006)

Overview
Seeking the much-desired quality of 'ul-jjang' (the perfect face), 17-year-old Hyunsu's friends are envious that she has a plastic surgeon for a mother. On their summer vacation together, she watches as her friends get plastic surgery and then one by one begin to die mysterious deaths. Hyunsu's mother holds the key to the dark secrets that have been tucked away up to now.

My Impression
As any Asian movie this one is a little bit complicated and you need some time in the beginning to understand what this movie is about. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the dvd overview make you think of something else. In fact, you understand the story only after the first 45 minutes and everything turn "creepy" and sad. Yes sad, this is certainly one of the sadder and depressing "horror" movie I've seen. You can understand the "bad guy" action and sympathize with him/her as you do for the 2 real victims. I can't wrote more than this because I don't want to spoil it, but if you like your "horror" different with a psychological side to make you think you will like this one.

Title : Drawing Blood (2005)

Overview
Bodies begin to pile up the moment George Adam's wife leaves town for the weekend. George's past comes back to him, but its nothing like his current life in a safe, calm suburban home. Unbeknownst to him, lovers, friends and neighbors cannot escape the grip of his evil basement. If the local law enforcement can piece the grisly clues together, they may be able to save the next innocent victim. Drawing Blood is a psychological horror film that captures the raw terror of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the pure horror of Halloween.

My Impression
"Raw terror of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and pure horror of Halloween" my ass ::) Really poor movie with no character development at all. Sure many people are killed (very poorly to be polite), but we don't really care since we know nothing about them except for what we see before they got in the house. Terror sure ::), a person enter in the house for whatever reasons, George isn't there and they are smash on the head with an axe, a hammer, a bottle and a couple of ridiculous things I won't say. The acting is really poor with the exception of Robert Z'Dar and Joe Estevez (he really looks more and more like his father) who aren't there a lot in the movie. Some nudity is present that help a little (even if the girls aren't that good looking) but not that much. By the way one of those scene demonstrate the lack of talent of the crew involve in the filming : 2 actors are supposed to have an intercourse but we are able to see clearly that they wear their underwear all the time ::)

Pete if you watch this one could you tell me who is the killer... I sure have no idea of who is it supposed to be :-\

Title : It Waits (2004)

Overview
It is a vengeful beast of Native American legend, sealed deep within a cave for over one thousand years. Nearby in a remote forest outpost, troubled young ranger Danielle St. Clair (Cerina Vincent of 'CABIN FEVER') is struggling to confront dark demons of her own. But when the creature is accidentally released from its secret tomb, Danny’s inner conflicts meet a flesh-and-blood nightmare: A monster that hunts without equal, slaughters without mercy and savors the taste of human torment. Now its wait is over. And tonight, one woman must face - and destroy - its flesh-ripping fury ... alone!

My Impression
Nice one that looks really like an eighties film. The scare come more from the general mood of the movie than from the creature itself, in fact we have to wait a long time to really see it (something that I've always appreciated) and when it finally happen I was happy to see a man in a suit and not a CGI thing. But sadly they had used some CGI when the creature flies, it doesn't match really well and, honestly, you can do it with a blue screen much better. Cerina Vincent is surprisingly good in the movie (for the reviewer her white shirt was certainly a distraction), since most of the time she is alone. The rest of the acting is correct also. Some ideas could be more developped, but I've appreciated this one in general.

Title : DeadHouse (2004)

Overview
Four teens venture on a road trip to visit family on their vacation. They are trapped inside a broken down house by a clown masked killer and tortured. Now with time against them they must lean to put their differences aside and try to survive their night at Dead House!

My Impression
Unoriginal and boring... This is so amateur that most of the time we heard absolutly nothing because the "actors" mumble their lines or the music is way too loud. The special effects are non-existent and nothing happen... The killer had a paper sheet for a clown mask for god sake, talk about cheap... Really the trailer looks 500% better than the movie is. Not as bad as The Sorority, but it can get its member card of the crappy movie club...

Title : Planet Blood (2008)

Overview
After a comet struck the Earth, destroying most of the populace, a man Justin lives alone in his house, haunted by fear and guilt. As he fights with his inner demons, he also must deal with swarns of flesh-eating vampires who appeared from the bowels of the Earth after the apocalypse.

My Impression
This one is short (50 minutes without the end credit), but this is certainly the first one that I've really appreciated in those 50 movies set. Of course it isn't perfect and have come weakness like the use of CGI to represent the blood when a vampire is killed or a couple of jump cut because of the editing. But the good acting of Brett Kelly, the fast moving of the film (not that the action is fast, more that the story is fast), the general melancholic tone of the film and the ending make up for the weakness.

Nice short (too short) Canadian movie who owe probably a lot to "The Last Man on Earth" for its inspiration (I've never seen the original or the 2 remakes).

According to imdb this film doesn't exist, so maybe I review only one of my dream

Title : The Slasher (2000)

Overview
You can't see him, you can't hear him, you can't find him... but he can find YOU!

My Impression
What to expect from a movie with the most generic title ever seen... probably not much and in this case "not much" isn't an overstatement. Boring, boring and more boring... 5 minutes of this was enough for me, but I've made the effort to watch it all for you. Badly filmed (we see the boom mic so many time that I don't understand why it isn't credited in the cast list), some of the dialogue is re-recorded and those guys can't even read their lines (make you wonder why they have recorded it live in the first place), the acting is awfull (I feel generous, since it's worst than awfull), the effects are the let throw some red stuff kind of effect and even the nudity isn't a saving grace for me (those girls are full of tatoo, rings and piercing :yucky:).

Title : Killer Story (2004)

Overview
Monty and Fortunato, two old-time writers, get locked away in an abandoned saloon by a mysterious stranger and are prodded into out-duelling each other with their storytelling abilities by a sexy woman, who may in fact be a ghost.

My Impression
Correct me if I'm wrong but an anthology is usually composed of 3 stories plus a wraparound and this isn't the case here. Certainly not that big of a reproach since I've appreciated it, in fact that looks like something that could be a failed pilot for a serie like "The Ray Bradbury Theater" (wich is not the case at all). Personally I like more the first story who had a better script, acting and vibes. Not that the second isn't good, but it was too predictable since the short Poe's story that had inspired it is well known. The wraparound had a good end and it's always nice to see 2 good actors like William Smith and Joe Estevez in a film like that. Of course the film isn't really frightening since it is based on three Edgar Allan Poe's short stories and, to be honest, it was maybe scary in the 19th century but certainly not anymore.

I think you will appreciate this one Pete ;)

Title : Frightworld (2007)

Overview
Frightworld, a horror themed amusement park that has been shut down for decades, is about to be re-opened. To celebrate, the new owner, his girlfriend and their friends throw a party on the park grounds. The party gets a little bit out of hand and blood gets shed.

My Impression
This one is surely an exhausting watching experience, so much that I had to take a couple of break from it to catch my breath... The movie throw everything in your face with an editing completely weird, a very unenlightened set, an audio hard to hear by moment because of the echo, gory effect coming out of nowhere in a flash and a lot of metal music top level. Those factors themselve don't make a bad film, but more something like a grueling experimental horror film...

The acting quality is variable, but Andrew Roth who play the park owner and Kamillia Kova (http://www.imodel.com/index.cfm?mid=10699) (love her sexy british accent) are certainly one head above the rest of the cast.

Not good or bad, but certainly different...

Title : The Las Vegas Serial Killer (1986)

Overview
A killer is stalking the streets of Las Vegas, a merchant of whose resume in the field of human slaughter is vast and horrifying. On August 31, 1986 Jonathan Klick was released from the Nevada State Penitentiary on a technicality. He arrived in Las Vegas three days later and is responsible for what came to be known as "The Glitter Gulch Holocaust."

My Impression
Personally I like it, but since it's a Ray Dennis Steckler's movie most people will find it boring. This is the sequel of The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher my favorite Steckler's movie and the movie isn't that different (except that Carolyn Brandt isn't in this one, since her character was killed in the first part). Pierre Agostino continue his quest to strangle all the dirty woman of Las Vegas while, at the same time, 2 guys are on the pursuit of their dream of becoming the greatest purse snatchers of Vegas. If all this sound exciting listen really well, this isn't the case at all. So why I like that? Because it's Steckler... The film had random stock footage of a parade and of a rodeo, the naration is silly and unnecessary (like The Hollywood Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher this film was made to be listen without the narative), the murder aren't bloody at all and most of the girls are attractive.

I haven't found a single one of his film (even the adult one that are really weird) that I haven't like and this one will certainly not be the first one.

Title : I Dream of Dracula (2001)

Overview
An erotic tale of vampire lust!

My Impression
The film start with a bad news at least for me
(http://img01.imagefra.me/img/img01/2/10/3/aesp_pres/f_gods8onr6kmm_ba2f4dd.jpg)
The same guy who had made the awfull mess that is The Slasher that I've reviewed yesterday :weep:

That sure means that I was expecting definitely not something enjoyable and decent... Of course the movie was awfull, badly act and with those ugly girls full of tatoo and piercing. But at least this time the sound is audible (sure it would be better if the film wasn't so much overact) and the director of photography is better (even if he abuse of the zoom in the person talking only). One of actress (Michellina Shaffranski) act relatively well, at least she act natural, and she is cute in a normal everyday girl kind of way. The sad thing is that this film could have been good with a real script and better actors (even for low budget the ones in this film are awfully bad)...

I don't give up on this guy yet at least he had showned some sign of amelioration with his second film. By the way,
there are nothing erotic in this film unless you like not good looking tattooed pierced girls ::)

Title : A Bothered Conscience (2006)

Overview
Twenty years after his father is murdered in a savage act of retribution, Lucas is left alone to preserve the twisted family legacy.

My Impression
Now color me surprise, but this movie is awesome  Not just in a low budget awesome way, but in the greatest new horror movie I've seen in year way

For a first movie the director had made a top-notch movie... highly original with a well written script that make the viewer empathize with the "bad guys" (you will understand at the end). The principal character played by the father of the director is incredibly well cast (no problem to believing he is Keller McGavin), Stephen Martin who is cast as McGavin's son is a good choice also. Of course the other aren't that great, but this isn't a problem since they aren't important. This movie is the perfect exemple of what is a scary film for me : something that can happen for real.

This director is destined to go higher than the low budget film, remember the name Dennis Smithers Jr. you will certainly hear it again in a near future.

It really sad to see that every horror released theatrically in the recent years are bad remake when a film like this exist.

Title : Alucard (2003)

Overview
A modern telling of Bram Stoker's classic!

My Impression
My god this movie is endless...  It is not only long by its running time (2h30), but by the way it is construct. Let me explain, all the movie is based on the diary of the principal characters (I think that the original Bram Stoker's book was like that also) and everytime something a little bit interesting happen we switch to a new diary. This switching make a very confusing film (of course, I've to be honest by confessing that I've fallen asleep a couple of time). This is a really big negative, because the movie itself is well made and a good conversion of an old story in the modern time. The movie is just too long for a low budget... But the last 10 minutes are great!

Maybe you will like it Pete, since you're a biggest vampire movie fan than me. Don't let my review discourage you ;)

Title : Hell Hath No Fury (2005)

Overview
Hell Hath No Fury is a balls-out horror anthology that is a bloody and erotic mix of stories in the style of the horror-lit anthologies.

My Impression
Another good Canadian movie (I know I'm partial for our industry). This anthology is center around the revenge theme and for a rare occasion it's women revenge time... The acting in this one is real good, but this isn't a big surprise since the acting talent pool in Vancouver is one of the best in our country thanks to the multiple American TV shows and movies made there. At the beginning the film is confusing since it start with 2 real shorts segment of maybe 5 minutes, but they will became clearer later since they are connected to the others. Of course each of the story aren't at the same quality level, but Prey and Torched are awesome. In Prey a police officer get her revenge on her rapist in a very particular way without being involve directly in it. Torched is a very hard one and not a funny watching at all for a guy. This time it's a nurse who will get her revenge on her unknown rapist, this one is a festival of torture and error. Of course the general theme isn't an appealing one for everyone that's why a little funny time travelling segment is included (nothing complicated or gruesome).

I consider that this one is worthy of an individual purchase that's why I've added this film to my wishlist for listening the commentary and give more money to those guys. They really deserve it.

Title : Eaten Alive (1980)

Overview
A girl risks her life and plunges into a jungle hell in search of her missing sister. Throughout her perilous journey, she must fend off hungry cannibal tribes and avoid being served up as a sacrificial lamb for a good old-fashioned suicide cult!

My Impression
One of the first Italian exploitation film that I've bought on dvd and it's always a pleasure to rewatch this one. Very good cannibal exploitation film, not as good as Cannibal Holocaust or Cannibal ferox but a top one. In fact this movie loose a lot of point when you realized that it recycle footage from Man from Deep River, Jungle Holocaust and Mountain of the Cannibal God (not that the footage is that obvious with the exception of the killing of the Me Me Lai character, but it's easy to spot if you have seen those movie previously). The story is a mix of two different subjects : Cannibals and isolated religious cult (an obvious reference to the Jonestown cult massacre of 1974). I think that this amalgam gives more depth to this movie compared to the other cannibal exploitation film (except for the sublime Cannibal Holocaust). The movie had a good cast like most of the Italian film with a mix of Europeans an Americans stars like Janet Agren, Ivan Rassimov, Mel Ferrer, Paola Senatore and, of course, Robert Kerman who give a much better performance in this one than in Cannibal Holocaust. You can even catch, if you know them of course, Gerald Grant (great in Radley Metzger's Score) and Jake Teague (his most known role for most of you is probably Mr. Biddle in Debbie Does Dallas).

Great Italian exploitation film, but of course this type of cinema isn't for everybody.

Title : Dark Light (1993)

Overview
A tale of intense vampire action!

My Impression
The problem with this one is the budget, more money could make it so much better. The basic idea is interesting :  the army had done a secret research to create a race of super soldiers, they had used a vampire as a guinea pig to combine is strength with the human strenght (the real army experiment on thing as insane as this in real life). The experience had succeed with the creation of a vampire race who can live in daylight. But when the human-vampire hybrid break out they have to retrieve him and keep it secret. That sound like a pretty good film on paper, but on the screen not so. Nothing really happen and the action is absent. Too bad that this idea was not developed better...

Title : Anthropophagus (1980)

Overview
A group of tourists take a boat ride to a deserted island. Once there, they discover that most of the residents have disappeared and soon find themselves being stalked by a malevolent presence. They try to uncover the mystery but nothing could possibly prepare them for what they would eventually find.

My Impression
Obviously this one will never meet my high expectations before watching it and after more than one viewing this haven't change. It was on the UK video nasty list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_nasties) with some great film like The Beyond, Cannibal Ferox, Cannibal Holocaust, etc. (of course some stupid film like Don't Go Near the Park and Snuff were also on this list ::)). So I was expecting a movie more gruesome and shocking than this, but I've to say that one of the scene near the end is really shocking. Without those expectations, I would had appreciate this film more since it's a good variation of the close room theme (the room here being an isolated island) with the mysterious vanishing of all its population. Joe D'Amato for a rare time had created a good suspense in this film, we have time to know the characters and, in some degree, to get attach to them.

Without the false hope created by the British censor board my rating would have been  ;D, but since I feel cheated my rating will be lower...

Title : Torment (2007)

Overview
Suzi Lorraine (Chainsaw Sally, Satan's Schoolgirls) plays Laura Wiggington, a woman recently discharged from a psychiatric hospital. Her husband Ray (Tom Stedham) takes her to an isolated river cottage to recover. There she is stalked by a psychopathic clown named Dissecto (Lucien Eisenach -- Hellbound: Book of the Dead) who performs macabre "tricks" for his literally captive audiences. But does the clown really lurk nearby or only in the dark recess of Laura's troubled mind?

My Impression
Not too bad except for a very important fact : Clowns aren't frightenning unless you are a teenagers and the clown is John Wayne Gacy. So it was really hard to not laugh even when the clown torture the two Mormons Missionaries, more when we see him making ballons trick and others clown thing before finally killing them. But like I've said this is a good movie where you aren't sure if all of this happen for real or not (to be honest, I have no idea if it is or not). For the obvious budget limitation that the movie had the director had done a nice little suspense. The acting without being great is correct (if we forgive the fact that one of the Missionary looks more bored than frighten when he is tortured). The casting of Tom Stedham as the husband doesn't work for me, he just look too old to be married with Suzi Lorraine.

Title : Master of Darkness Magic (2004)

Overview
A group travels into the woods to find some mysterious magic abounds.

My Impression
Wich word can I used to describe this film? grandiose, gorgeous, wonderful, awsome, thrilling, action filled, masterpiece, ....

Of course none of them ::)
This film is simply cheap, ridiculous and idiotic. Think of a bunch of idiot who had played "Dungeon & Dragons" way too many time and decided to play the game for real. But there is a catch : The game master isn't really good and had a hard time to came with some ideas to make the game interesting... So we have a thief, a mage (she knows only one magic that is missile), a priest (even more annoying than Richard Simmons) trying to reach the level 4, an overweight fighter who can't win a fight against a flying sword (don't get excited this is really ridiculous to watch), an old wizard who looks like Merlin (he can cast only one magic also, Fireball) and a Necromancer who is supposed to be the bad guy but isn't because he kill the villagers to build an army of lame zombie to fight against a dark knight who wants to open the gates of hell to bring the armageddon to the forest kingdom (No it isn't that awesome... but I try to make it sound like).

Bad acting, cheap effect, bad sound (it goes from one speaker to another, the sound works one speaker at the time so the other is full of parasite and distorsion), the actors look embarrassed to be in this, ....

Not at the level of The Sorority since I've laught almost all the film and, at least, one of the actress is a cute French Canadian girl...

Rating :  :hysterical: (I can't rate something so ridiculous)

Title : Trapped (1982)

Overview
An Innocent camping weekend turns into terror and murder for four young university students. Henry Chatwell (Henry Silva, OCEANS 11, SHARKEY'S MACHINE, CHAINED HEAT) stalks, tortures and kills his wife's lover, witnessed by the students. Unable to contact the sheriff, they return to their campfire, where they are taken captive.

Chatwell's verdict is that the students must die!

My Impression
One thing that I've learned in my years of movie watching is to not step in in the redneck bussiness if I don't want a lot of trouble, of course those four young students don't give a damn. The film is not exactly what I expected (a trashier version of Deliverance), but I've appreciated it anyway. Of course the student act like idiot (not in the sense of "American Pie" idiot, but in the sense of nobody would react like that). Henry Silva gives a terrific performance in the role of the redneck who lost all his self control after he catch his wife cheating on him. The poor guy he catch get the beating of his life for this. Strangely the film lost its momentum when the town citizens catch the students as the story turn into a cat and mouse game, but the final is sure grandiose...

Not the best film directed by William Fruet (the honor goes to Death Weekend who is not released yet on dvd), but another good Canadian film.

Title : Kottentail (2005)

Overview
When two animal rights activists set free a lab rabbit, they unknowingly release a bloodthirsty beast which is hungry for human flesh.

My Impression
I was asking myself how they could have made an horror movie with rabbits as monsters, since Night of the Lupus the only other one I've seen was certainly ridiculous... It didn't took me long to understand that this movie would be the first real comedy in this marathon. The openning credit is made like a comic book and they use this technic often in the movie for the transition. But the real giver was the first glimpse of the rabit in the laboratory :hysterical:

So this is our bloodthirsty rabbit, don't worry it will attack only one person who will get infected and as a result turning into :fingerchew:

After some story development, I will not reveal them of course, a team is formed to fight Kottentail (the guys infected is name Hans Kottentail) and what a team

Of course the acting delivery is bad (but I think it's voluntary), the effect is poor, the story stupid and the dialog silly. But I've laugh almost non stop, not because the movie is bad but because it's a real good comedy (silly but there is nothing bad with that)

Title : A Vampire's Tale (2004)

Overview
A modern day vampire struggles to find out who he is.

My Impression
First comment does someone is in charge of the quality control at Mills Creek? I hope not, since their overview for this film had nothing to do with it. The real story is : A man had seen his girlfriend killed by a vampire, since than he wants to avenge her by killing the vampire responsible. For this he will recruit a woman recently attack by the same vampire.

Now that this is corrected here we go with the review... Not really original, short in action and the acting is ok without being great. One big problem, at least for me, is the quality of the color in the film itself. The color are all wash out and bland, maybe this is a director choice (more probably the quality of the film stock used was low) but this is boring to watch.

Really nothing special here

Title : Tartarus (2005)

Overview
A horror/sci-fi film, Tartarus is about how man lives in two worlds - one that controls his physical being and one that commands his soul.

My Impression
The description isn't really perfect again, but almost... In fact John is stuck in a bizarre world (Tartarus) who looks like an alien abduction nightmare (what it isn't but I can't spoil it). While he go through some weird "medical" testing he succeed to escape for some time. The film despite is obvious lack of money (the CGI effects are really low quality, the score is annoying and the sets are really cheap looking) pass the test. The subject is original, Juan Fernandez can really act frighten and you are surprised when you finally understand what is really this place.

Title : Nutcracker : An American Nightmare (2003)

Overview
A prominent psychologist uses advanced brainwave technology that allows him to see into the minds of his patients - but it backfires on him, and he sees his own repressed memory, killing his father, and placing the blame on his brother, who was confined to a mental institution.

My Impression
This one could have been so much better. The problem is that the story doesn't move very fast and you are bore many times since nothing really interesting happen. But David Hess seems to have a lot of fun with a role different than what he is usually typecast in.

Title : The House by the Cemetery (1981)

Overview
A young family moves from their cramped New York City apartment to a spacious new home in New England. But this is no ordinary house in the country: the previous owner was the deranged Dr. Freudstein, whose monstrous human experiments have left a legacy of bloody mayhem. Now, someone -- or something -- is alive in the basement, and home sweet home is about to become a horrific hell on earth.

My Impression
Not one of the best Fulci's film. The film had a good start but the story take a turn in the nothing department for most of the running time, untill the end when finally we get some great Fulci's effect. It's evident that the ghost movie isn't one of my favorite horror genre, so for me 2/3 of this movie is boring. Sure the dubbing doesn't help at all, the boy's voice is so annoying (why take an adult to do a whining girly voice like that?). Not that the movie is that bad, but for a Fulci's movie this isn't really impressing.

Title : Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat (2002)

Overview
From the godfather of gore, Herschell Gordon Lewis, comes the most eagerly awaited sequel in the blood red history of splatter cinema!  The cannibal caterer is back with a new recipe for gross-out, comedic carnage that literally blows chunks across the silver screen!  From the groundbreaking production team of H.G. Lewis and David Friedman, the maniacal masterminds responsible for BLOOD FEAST, 2000 MANIACS and COLOR ME BLOOD RED, BLOOD FEAST 2 is a gorehound's wet dream!

My Impression
Of course this one isn't as good as the original Blood Feast who was the first gore movie ever made, but it isn't too bad. They had decided with this one to do a black comedy and some of this comedy works well by exemple the running gag with the detective who always eat or the dead father who is always dressed differently everytime we see him. Of course the acting isn't really good (I'm not certain if this is voluntary or not), but... The killing effect are particulary good (a little disgusting at time, don't eat while watching ;)) and the score by Southern Culture on the Skids is interesting. Even if he just had a little cameo, I've appreciated John Waters (director of Pink Flamingos, Polyester and many others films) in the role of a priest on the prowl for some alter boy ;)

Title : Divine Intervention (2007)

Overview
Steve Reynolds, strung out on drugs, experiences a divine vision and becomes inspired to embark on a ruthless quest of recruiting people into the Lord's Army. A sinner in his midst gets two options - prayer or the crossbow. Fighting off his own compulsive demons as well as a checkered past, Steve brings the word of the Lord down on the sinners of Ware, MA one arrow at a time. Will Steve save any souls with his own brand of vigilante divinity? Only God knows.

My Impression
This is one of those movie were I root for the bad guy (even if he is a nutcase). Why? Because his target is a bunch of stupid teenagers from the internet generation (sorry for our younger members) and I've learned to hate them at my previous night job. I despise their language, their stupidity and the lack of respect they have for their elder... So I was sure happy to see a bunch of idiot drunk and stoner killed by a crazy religious guy, too bad that he didn't kill them all.

For the film itself the acting isn't that great, the effect aren't too bad for this kind of movie (look normal and not over the top) and we got some nice looking girls for some gratuitious nudity. One of the girl who can act is the everyday kind of girl who is usually my type (some picture attached).

A nice way to pass 80 minutes

Title : Shutter (2004)

Overview
Late one night on a country road. Tun and Jane accidentally run down a mysterious pedestrian. Fleeing the scene, they return to their lives in Bangkok, but soon discover that life has returned to anything but normal. Nightmares haunt Jane's dreams while Tun, a photographer, notice odd spectral figures begin to appear in his work. Returning to investigate the site of the accident, they can find neither rumour nor report of the victim. But when one by one, Tun's closest friends begin to die, he and Jane know they must unravel this mystery before it unravels their very lives.

My Impression
Those Asians are certainly the master to create fear without a lot of blood or music trick. This one is another one who deal with the spirit world (sometimes it get annoying since 90% of their horror films are based on that), but this one deal with the remorse and sorrow emotions also. Of course if you have seen a lot of these Asian films you will get a good idea from the start where this film will go, but it countains a good part of surprise. Be sure that this film will make you jump by moment and that some moments are really scary (by exemple the ladder scene near the end or the moving spirit in the series of polaroid). By moment the films is confusing but all will become clearer while the story progress. This isn't an american production, so don't expect a feel good ending.

Title : Brainiac (2004)

Overview
Victims are found with their heads drilled and their brains literally sucked out. As the mysterious deaths pile up, Doctor Sunday Morgan, Assistant Laboratory Director at PsyMax, finds clues to a cover-up at PsyMax.

My Impression
This movie is stupid and pointless :yucky:
It's a remake of El barón del terror a mexican black & white movie made in 1962 that I've never seen, but I'm sure that it's a more enjoyable way to pass the time (all the mexican movie of this period that I've seen had a masked wrestler character, so even if they are boring we can watch a wresting match). Too bad this remake doesn't have a masked wrestler, since that would make the movie 1,000,000,000% better... But in place of that we get lousy acting, very bad special effects (Tom Savini must be ashame of himself, since he is responsible for them), a share holder meeting with 5 stockholder (the company is supposed to be on the New-York Stock Exchange), a strip club where the strippers dance with a bikini (this is probably the reason why the club had only 3 clients), a 17 years old Cheerleader who looks 35 and a story obvious from the beginning. Title : Doctor Dracula (1980)

Overview
Though his readers find it hard to believe, prominent author John Wainwright claims in his books to be the reincarnation of famed magician and mind controller Svengali. The black magic forces of Radcliff (Carradine) allow Wainwright to stage the ritual sacrifice of his newest Trilby, wich leads to a bizarre confrontation with the strange Dr. Gregorio - Who is actually the long undead Count Dracula.

My Impression
Even if I'm a fan of Al Adamson usually, I wasn't expecting much from this movie (this isn't for nothing if I've wait more than one year and a half to watch it). This film was destined to be a mess, why? Because it was first a Paul Aratow's incompleted movie made in 1975 under the name Lucifer's Women about a satanic cult. Years later Adamson had shoot some new footage and add a vampire plot to the film. Evidently the result is inegal and the story isn't an easy one to follow (without forgetting that the appearance of Larry Hankin had changed in 6 years). The acting isn't too good and no one seems really interested by the project. This is really sad to see John Carradine in this film, since he looks very unhealthy and had to read his text (he even do that with many difficulty). Of course
Jane Brunel-Cohen is easy on the eyes but she's one of the worst actress I've seen (and I've seen my part of bad acting in my movie genre).

By chance the movie was a part of a 3 movies set and the others were good...

Title : Johnny Sunshine (2007)

Overview
In the year 2012, three years after the rise of zombies, a seedy underworld of exploitation and violence exists in a maze of alleyways and speakeasies just outside the city walls; where life is cheap and the drugs are cheaper. Surviving to a ripe old age has become an urban myth. At the center of it all is Johnny Sunshine, a porn-snuff star and killer for hire. She stalks the night like a tempest of sex and violence, much to the pleasure and profit of her producer, Max, and his entertainment empire. As the body count rises, Johnny becomes a victim of her own success. A secret plot is hatched to orchestrate her downfall and capture it all on camera to create the greatest snuff film ever made.

My Impression
Another deception, not that I was expecting something awesome in the first place. Poor excuse for an horror movie, the zombie had absolutly no make-up and they look just like the drunk we see at 3 AM at the bar exit ::) This is more an excuse to show some real poor execution of snuff movie with non attractive people, one girl had a pretty face but her breasts are fake (not my style at all). If I want to watch a sadistic film I can watch an Avon Film in my collection and not lost my time like I had just done with this ::)

What can I say sometimes we win sometimes we loose with those set...

Title : Alone in the Dark (1982)

Overview
At a secluded mental institution, Dr. Bain ('Halloween's' Donald Pleasence) maintains order while electricity fuels the asylum's hi-tech security system that keeps the nearby neighborhoods safe from menaces like Frank Hawkes (Academy Award® winner Jack Palance*, 'City Slickers') and "Preacher" (Academy Award® winner Martin Landau, 'Ed Wood'). Meanwhile a new doctor, Dan Potter ('The A-Team's' Dwight Schultz), arrives in town with his family, but the inmates don't take kindly to his presence and believe he has killed off their former therapist. Suddenly a power outage leaves the town in chaos...and now the maniacs are free to roam the streets and hunt down the man they believe has invaded their lives. With the area quickly descending into riots and chaos, the innocent few must fight for their lives when they're left terrified, cornered and ALONE IN THE DARK! One of the most memorable and terrifying cult horror films of the 1980s, this white-knuckle shocker from director Jack Sholder ('The Hidden') delivers one seat-jumping scare after another along with a thick vein of sly, pitch-black humor. Turn off the lights and watch...if you dare!

My Impression
Damn nuclear power goes and the lunatics had taken over the asylum again, but this time they had taken the city also. This one is a pleasant memory, since I've seen it at the theater (ours was not strict at all, if it was ok with our parents no problem to enter). This one is probably one of the most frightening movie of the eighties (as you already know for me the movie that can happen for real are the scarier) who make you jump almost continuously till the end. Of course the acting is top level... which isn't surprising when you had the great Jack Palance and Martin Landau (who had surprised me at the times since I was knowing him only for Space 1999 and Mission Impossible). The supporting cast is great also with Erland van Lidth (who looks innocent but is really frightening) and Phillip Clark (who had a big surprise for you). Really this one is a strong recommandation if you have never seen it.

Surprisingly the next movie of Jack Sholder after this great "Night of the Living Dead feels like films" will be the weak Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2. Finally I love the punk music played by the Sick Fucks (God the eighties music was awesome)

Title : Die You Zombie Bastards! (2006)

Overview
Thrill to the mayhem that ensues when ever-lovable serial killer Red Toole sets off on a globe-trotting quest in search of his missing wife, the lovely Violet - caught in the clutches of the evil Baron Nefarious who, of course, plans to conquer the world (or something) by turning everyone into Mindless Zombie Slaves! Sure, the story may sound familiar, but trust us - you've never seen anything like this...

My Impression
Don't expect something like a scary movie here, since it's a Troma like horror comedy (if Jon can count a movie with the word ghost in the title, I think I can do the same with mine... At least mine had naked green painted girl zombies in it :P). Being a Troma like film, you already know what to expect : bad acting, cheap special effect, gratuitious nudity and juvenile humour. Yes all of this is there in this film, but this isn't really the reason why I've bought it (Troma isn't really one of my favourite studio). I've bought it because Jamie Gillis (one of my favorite American actor) have a role in the movie and Hasil Adkins was a really cool redneck. The film itself isn't too bad, even if the humour is juvenile it's funny (certainly more than the idiotic ones I've watch in another marathon (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,5314.0.html)) and I like the fact that everyone overact voluntary with the exception of Jamie gillis who act seriously.

Not a movie that I watch often (2 times in three years), but it's a real funny ride.

Title : The Vampire Conspiracy (2003)

Overview
Five strangers are abducted by a megalomaniacal vampire and put into a deadly maze of witz and endurance. Should they make it through alive, they receive this vampire entire fortune. Should they fail, they become his victims and are placed back into the game, this time as a succubus to hunt the next round of victims.

My Impression
All I can say is, at the risk of sounding partial again, I begin to think our horror industry is the best. The best way to describe this film is "Cube with vampires and more". Of course the participants don't have puzzle to resolve to open the door since they are in a maze, but they have to find what is the common denominator between them to survive. The movie low budget doesn't really hurt it, since nothing would have been really different with more money. The acting is good, but some of the characters are a little bit too cliché. The only negative thing is the end who happen too fast and is unclear (for me it was).

Another Canadian winner

Title : Kiss daddy goodbye (1981)

Overview
In a small quiet seaside town, two gifted children are left to fend for themselves after a gang of outlaw bikers murders their father. But when these twins, who have inherited their deceased mother's supernatural powers, decide to ressurect their father's corpse, the town will awaken to a series of bizarre murders. As the local sheriff tries to uncover the mystery behind the strange killings, the children begin to lose control of their powers and stop at nothing to avenge their father's death.

My Impression
Nothing really special here... Feels almost like a tv movie since we see no blood when somebody is shot or stab (weird since the film is rated R). The story is really badly developed and not really interesting. A really poor Marilyn Burns performance as usual (except for TCM she had never impress me), an old teen idol (Fabian) in the principal role, two annoying kids who takes 80% of the screen time (but the little girl is cute) and the less impressive 3 bikers club ever seen on screen.

The dvd quality is ordinary; full of tape defect (remaster my ass) and fullscreen... doesn't worth the 2$ I've paid for it.

Title : Shadow People (2008)

Overview
Billionaire Clarence Martel has everything money can buy, but not everything he wants, namely immortality. Seeking to fulfill an ancient dark prophecy, Mr. Martel approaches Mikey, a gambler in way over his head, with a simple proposition. In exchange for a one night job, Mikey's debt will be wiped clean.

Having no other way of clearing his debt, Mikey and his brother Paul agree to do the job. In an old abandoned house, they perform a ritual known as the "Drawing of the Shadows" and unwittingly unleash the demons of the darkness, the Shadow People.

Forced off the road by a storm, four unsuspecting friends seek shelter in the house and fall into the deadly trap already set in motion. If they want to survive, they must play a terrifying game of cat and mouse with the house's murderous inhabitants.

My Impression
With a better director this one could have been good, since the basic idea is interesting. But the set had a lot of weakness : the outside shot of the house made ovious that it's only a little shed and the house is supposed to be strongly board but it looks really easy to remove the plywood from the window. We don't really care about the people who died since no character builing is made. The fact that the sound is bad doesn't help also, it isn't that much to ask for a commercially release film to be audible I think... At worst, just reregister the voices track. The set is badly light, but I can live with that since it is the base of the story. Of course, the acting isn't that great (a lot of overacting) but usually that doesn't bother me that much. I don't really like the idea to let a book in a box prepared by the rich guy employee that explain how to win (very weak I'm stuck and I don't kow what to do kind of idea)

Not too bad, but too many weakness to be really appreciated...

Title : Trees (2000)

Overview
Life is peaceful in the small town of Hazelville until a man-eating Great White Pine makes the Memorial Day campers into a holiday feast. With an ingenious scheme, forest ranger Mark Cody, botanist Max Cooper and Squint the lumberjack turn the buffet table around on the killer tree.

My Impression
This one is a parody of Jaws, but with a killer tree in place of a killer shark... Of course the idea is stupid, but no more than a killer elevator or a killer laundry folding machine. Evidently the movie isn't scary at all and no one had stopped to go in thw woods because of him. It was a good parody, not a great one with a lot of laugh but respectfull of the original material.

Not something that I would have paid for, but since it was in a 50 movies pack it's ok.

Title : Art of the Devil (2004)

Overview
In modern-day Thailand, witchcraft is not something to be taken lightly. In fact, there are dire consequences if you do. When a millionaire spurns his pregnant mistress, she places a deadly curse on his entire family. Soon, each family member dies in a decidedly brutal fashion. The police are puzzled. But an observant and open-minded reporter might be just the guy to unlock the mystery. This absolutely relentless Thai thriller, making its American DVD debut, boasts enough gruesome and shocking imagery for ten horror films.

My Impression
Very different than the usual Asian movie that we are used to. This one as written in the overview deal with the world of curse and witchcraft. This is very good movie, even if the subtitles are a little bit fast and hard to set in Power DVD. The film start when the story is already in progress and you sure don't understand what happen, but the story will be reveal piece by piece untill it rejoins the point where it had started. In this film it's hard to not understand why the person responsible of the curse is at fault, the father of this familly has really mistreated her, in fact her fault is that she overeact and the word is even weak. The acting seems ok (it's not easy to judge when a movie isn't in a language you understand).

Another Asian winner....

I'm unable to find it on dvd, do you have any idea if this is available from an Asian website at least with english subtitles (not important at all if the extra are only in Thai)?

Khon len khong (Art the devil)
Long khong (Art of the Devil 2)

Hope that you can help me with this ;)

Title : Storm of the Dead (2006)

Overview
When the Florida Panhandle is hit by a "Category 5" hurricane, the President of the United States has no choice but to reactivate the Florida Militia to restore order in the region. In their quest to restore stability to an unstable area, the Militia is ordered to 'shoot looters'. When one of the looters tracked down and shot is the grandson of a Voodoo Queen, all hell breaks loose as she seeks revenge on the Militia.

My Impression
After watching this film I feel the same deception that if I would Have watch a movie called "Curse of the Black Mummy" and the film have been about an African mother using a lot of four letter words... More simply said there are no storm and no zombies in this film. It's just a non credible army reserve unit (with no name tag or apparent rank on their uniform or respect for the officer and carrying Chief Boyardee can as lunch in place of ration pack) who walks supposedly in the Florida swamp, find a trailer trash girl with a big pair of breast, 3 of the soldier are kill by the girl who is in fact an old black woman, 3 of them return at the base after talking with the old woman about the fact that it's not friendly to shoot looters and the movie is over. The film is as boring as it sounds... Debra Cassano (she's a pretty good actress) and Karin Justman are certainly two beautifull women (no, none of them are the TTGWBB)
(http://img01.imagefra.me/img/img01/2/10/13/aesp_pres/f_gods8onr6kmm_9c5e6f3.jpg)  (http://img03.imagefra.me/img/img03/2/10/13/aesp_pres/f_gods8onr6knm_ad32c6d.jpg)
But that wasn't enough to make this film interesting for me.

Title : Black Ribbon (2007)

Overview
Kenneth Richardson is a tormented writer, possessed, affected by a haunted machine. His wife Beth has a volatile relationship with him resulting from the haunted typewriter that has consumed Kenneth's life. Joey is a mentally challenged man with the mind of an eight year old, befriended by Kenneth. Nana is Joey's mother and protector. Jennifer Gesner is a Goth chick, who aligns herself with Kenneth to achieve the most horrifying ritual of Satan worship. Isabella Conti becomes the housekeeper for Ken and Beth, an innocent young lady caught in the web of horror and terror as Ken's life dramatically transforms into a life of misery.

My Impression
This one is less stupid that it sounds and don't tell me that an haunted typewriter doesn't sound ridiculous since I will not believe you. The story is interesting because of the way we see how Richardson is gradually affected by the curse and the attempt he does to keep his sanity. The acting for me the post part is amateur or annoying (Rudy J. Altenor who play the retard becomes annoying very fast). But the film is for the most part enjoyable, common we have a prisonner woman trap naked in a cage or lock on a table most of the time and Joe Franklin had a small cameo in the film (he was the host of The Joe Franklin Show, a local tv shows in the New York area, for more than 40 years). The problem is the end who is the most old and cliché idea of a twist to end a movie

(click to show/hide)

Without this the film would have been rated  :), but because of that it worth only this rating...

Title : City of the Living Dead (1980)

Overview
The Seven Gates of Hell have been torn open, and in 3 days the dead shall rise and walk the earth. As a reporter (Christopher George) and a psychic (Catriona MacColl) race to close the portals of the damned, they encounter a seething nightmare of unspeakable evil. The city is alive - with the horrors of the living dead!

My Impression
Now this is more what I expect from a Lucio Fulci's movie... This one is his best horror film after The Beyond and The New York Ripper (of course this is my oppinion). The story can be complicated to understand in the first viewing, so it's necessary to watch it 2 or 3 times to really appreciated it. The Living Deads are more frightening in this film, as in The Beyond, than in their American counterpart. They doesn't beat you by their number, they aren't dumb (for a dead person of course), they don't care about eating you (they just want to rip off your brain) and they can teleport themselves (it certainly look like that). The special effects are top-notch and really effective (the death scenes of Giovanni Lombardo Radice and Daniela Doria are two classic). You will see many familliar visages in the cast : Catriona MacColl (The Beyond), Christopher George (Day of the Animals), Venantino Venantini (Cannibal Ferox), Michele Soavi (director of Dellamorte Dellamore), Janet Agren (Eaten Alive), Perry Pirkanen (Cannibal Holocaust), Michael Gaunt (at least for me since he appeared in 15 adult movies that I own) and, of course, Giovanni Lombardo Radice and Daniela Doria. The score from Fabio Frizzi is effective (particullary the theme used when the living dead appear). The only critic as usual is the dubbing of the italian actors who sound too forced and unnatural.

Title : Knight Chills (2003)

Overview
It is the ultimate adventure as his rival strive to not only come to grips with what they thought could not be possible, but now must also fight to stay alive.

My Impression
My expectations for this film were not really high, since it's based on the Dungeon & Dragons game and playing that is boring as hell (sorry for the fans of those game). But I was pleasantly surprise since the movie is almost good. A lot of time is spend on the game playing club to develop the characters and it's a good thing since most of the time in those kind of film the development is really absent. The killer looks good (of course without the budget limitation he would have been much better). The story isn't complicated and the end is interesting, but the kid side story wasn't necessary (unless they had tried to let the end open for a sequel). The acting is correct for this genre of film with the usual mix of good, wooden and annoying (or really annoying) actors. Of course this film had some weakness... The story is a little bit too by the book and it didn't take long to know who will be the killer. The film had very few blood in it (it's evident that it isn't an R rated film). The police officer and the school officials are too caricatural.

Not a bad film, but don't expect something really original.

Title : Curse of the Wolf (2006)

Overview
A young woman, Dakota (Renee Porada) has finally found a way to "control" her Lycanthrope metamorphosis and desires to live a "normal life". All might be well if not for Dakota's "pack", who wants a different life for Dakota... to live in werewolf immortality and hunt with them forever!

My Impression
Not too bad... Of course the werewolf make-up is a little bit weak, but it's understandable since the movie was probably made for less than 50,000$. The story is original and the highlight of this movie, and the reason I like it, are the numerous martial art fight. All those fight are well choreographed and look real to me, of course the fact that most of the cast members are specialist in different fighting technics help. Most of the acting isn't that great, but when one of those actors is Darian Caine who cares if this is well act or not ;) The music is annoying and don't really fit for the most part, the instrumental pieces are ok (the problem is the songs).

This isn't An American Werewolf in London, but this is certainly better than The Howling 2 and Bad Moon.

Title : Lust for Dracula (2004)

Overview
Mina Harker (Misty Mundae) isn't the happiest of Hollywood Hills wives even though she's married to wealthy pharmaceuticals magnate Jonathan Harker (Julian Wells!). The depressed Mina longs for Jonathan's love and the happiness a child would bring them, yet the arrival of the beautiful and mysterious Dracula (Darian Caine) - seductive vampire servants at her side - will change their lives forever. Dracula offers Mina the existence she so desperately craves - one that is immediately threatened by Mina's sister, Abigail Van Helsing (Shelly Jones). Van Helsing seeks to not only destroy the monstrous vampire but also covet Mina's seemingly perfict life and husband Jonathan. As these troubled individuals move closer towards their destinies and a final battle with Dracula, blood will be spilled, souls will be destroyed, and true love will become undying.

My Impression
A more than welcome change of pace for me, since even if I like horror this isn't really my favorite genre and after a while they tend to all look alike. With an erotic vampire theme movie we are more in my usual territory. This isn't the first time I review this one and my opinion haven't really change, except for the fact that I've appreciated it even more this time. I've really more seen this time the artistic quality of this film, sure it's a weird vampire movie by itself but it possess a dreamlike visual poetry that make it more than a softcore film. Of course being a tony Marsiglia's production this isn't that surprising.

You can read my previous review (http://www.dvdcollectorsonline.com/index.php/topic,695.msg73675.html#msg73675) for more detail.

Title : This Darkness (2003)

Overview
When world-famous genetic engineer Dr. Van Helsing discovers the secret to immortality, his world is ravaged by true-blood vampires.

My Impression
Non sense and poor vampire movie, where the vampire attack an university professor because he had found a serum to became immortal and want it (sorry but vampires are suppose to be immortal they are no reasons for them to want the serum). Of course the vampire can live in the day, but they are cannibals also... I forgot you must shoot them in the head to kill them...

Completly lame and poorly acted... But the catacomb like place where they had filmed the end on a Florida beach is really beautifull and creepy.

Title : Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986)

Overview
Michael Rooker is unforgettable as Henry, a soft-spoken loner with a cool exterior masking an inner rage that boils at blast furnace intensity.

When fellow ex-con Otis invites Henry to move into his Chicago apartment, he becomes a willing participant in Henry's senseless, random killing sprees. Meanwhile, Otis' unsuspecting sister, Becky (Tracy Arnold) is smitten with Henry, whose broken childhood mirrors her own.

Masterfully directed by John McNaughton, HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER is a chilling character study of a mass murderer that continues to shock and disturb twenty years after its debut.

My Impression
Now I'm happy that my favorite horror movie was selected for this marathon. I know that some will disagree that this film is an horror movie, but for me it's the most frightening film I've ever seen (as you know I'm only frighten by the movie that could happen in real life). This movie is an evidence that it's possible to make a great film without a budget (100,000 $ for it). The acting is great and really convincing, seriously this is the best work of Michael Rooker and Tom Towles is the perfect choice to play Otis Toole. The movie doesn't always show the violent murder, but the result and this is scary to see only the dead victim and an echo of the murder action. Of course some murder are shown and the familly murder is the scarier thing I've ever seen on screen (I'm certain that the people who had seen the film understand) it's so realistically filmed and possible with all the crazy people living outside. The way Michael Rooker play Henry you had no choice to think that these kind of psychopat live a perfectly anonymous and normal life in reality.

Really nothing negative to say about this film (even the music score is frightening). They had changed some little fact about the real story by exemple the real Becky was the 12 years old niece of Otis, but I'm not sure that it's a bad thing since at one point enough is enough.

It's not everyone's cup of tea. It is a scary view into a killer's mind, someone who lacks emotion and just floats along through his life, with the killimg being a form of entertainment (there is no other apparent motivation). The scary thing about this film is that not only could this happen, it probably is happening somewhere right now...

Title : Pony Trouble (2005)

Overview
Tune in, turn on and freak out as Cindy and Donna take you on a wild ride into America's most obsessive, sexy and freaky pop-culture power trip!

My Impression
Honestly I've had definitely no idea of what the movie I just watched is about ???, but I'll try to resume...
This is about some teenagers who had win a contest to appear on a TV reality show in the future. The title of this show is the Pony Game and that consist of wearing paper mache horse head and playing with My Little Pony (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/My_Little_Pony) toy. The players are supposed to adopt the personality of the Little Pony they are (girls toy are sure an unknown and weird world to me ). Meanwhile a group of girls participant go in a canadian forest because they want to see a fairy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairy) (of course our forest are well known to be full of fairies when the Wendigo doesn't scare them) and they go there dress in fairy costume. I've forgot to say that some boys play also and one of them wear a baby costume. At the end they will fight some cyborg, some will die, one of the girl will find the Rainbow of Might and everyone will return to sing the happy song... The film end the same way it had started with a girl in underwear who whip and make love to a Care Bear (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Care_Bears). At one point they eat a guy this is the only possible reason why this is label as an horror movie.

I've nothing to add except that this film is problably awesome to watch on drugs

Title : Clean (2005)

Overview
Follow a dangerous killer and fellow murderers attending a snuff party. Unbeknownst to them, our anti-hero has an agenda to clean up his godforsaken life. The hunters become the hunted and learn the true meaning of fear!

My Impression
Awesome and original movie from my province, seriously what were you expecting from me... I had a lot of respect for all the Canadian filmakers who make their films without the need of government subsidy (they are so rare in our money sucking entertainment industry) and who probably make a better profit because they take chances. But since this isn't a political forum, I'll review the film (but I could write pages about those money leeches)...

Like I've said the film theme is original, a serial killer who decides to redeem himself by killing a group of killers. Of course none of the actor are well known (very appreciated since we always see the same actor over and over here), but the principal character was familliar to me. Not as an actor but as a singer, it's Marco Calliari the first singer/guitarist of Anonymus (a pretty good alternative rock band from our province) and now doing a solo career in italian. I was surprise since he is a very good actor, not something that I can say for all the actors in the film but we had to understand that the movie was filmed in english and not in french. Talking of french, it was fun for one time to understand everything perfectly since no one talk with an accent. Of course this is only true for me, Sebastien and Eric

The special effect without being great are well done and are old school like I prefer them. The film doesn't have a boring second and it goes real fast. I like the score also that made me remember the good time when I was partying at l'Express (an alternative bar who doesn't exist anymore from my city).

Sometimes I'm proud to be a French Canadian and this film is one of those time ;D

Title : Don't Answer the Phone! (1980)

Overview
A Vietnam veteran/photographer terrorizes Los Angeles by going around strangling young women in their homes while taunting psychologist Lindsay Gale by calling her radio call-in show to describe his misogynistic ways. Meanwhile, the police detectives are close behind the psycho hoping he'll slip up and make a mistake.

My Impression
Another personal favorite of mine, it's the movie I've bough the most often (five times : the original VHS released, the first dvd released by Rhino (the only dvd I've thrown in the garbage with all the violence and nudity cut), an uncut bootleg on dvd-r, the uncut version released by Deimos Entertainment and, finally, another uncut version in a 8 movies set). This is the kind of movie that doesn't had a lot of blood, in fact the mood of the film is created by the great performance of Nicholas Worth (who had sadly died not too long after the released of this dvd). No blood doesn't mean that this movie isn't violent, in fact I seriously doubt that you will appreciate it if you are a woman (all the victims are women and their killing is not really pleasant). Like I've said Nicholas Worth made this movie by his interpretation of the murderer (he can switch really fast to a good guy to a creepy guy to a complete psycho). It was also great to see James Westmoreland again in a first role (he is credited as Rad Fulton in The Undertaker and His Pals one of the first movie I've reviewed here). of course a lot of beautifull women appear also like Pamela Jean Bryant (Playboy Playmate of the month of april 78), Susanne Severeid, Denise Galik, ... Another note worthy cast member of this film is Chuck Mitchell, the name probably doesn't ring a bell for you but if I say that he had played Porky Wallace I'm sure that you know who he is.

Certainly not a bad film and a must in every film collection if you are a fan of crime horror film.

Sometimes I'm proud to be a French Canadian and this film is one of those time ;D

Jimmy, have you heard about Pontypool (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226681/)? I heard Mark Kermode review it last week and it sounds interesting. Confused a few people here because Pontypool is a place in Wales, but anyway...

It's essentially a zombie movie, but infected, not undead. Victims catch the virus through words! Sounds bizarre, but apparently it works. There's an interesting sub-text about going on as well: you don't catch the virus if you speak French! Read into that what you will...

You might be able to download the podcast here actually if you fancy a listen (it's the second one down): http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/fivelive/kermode/rss.xml

Title : He Knows You're Alone (1980)

Overview
Now you see him. Now you don't. The face of a killer appears out of the darkness and just as quickly disappears. A young woman has an eerie feeling someone is stalking her. Another beauty steps into a shower... and a bathroom-door handle slowly turns. We're in slasher-flick territory -- and also in a rare realm of film history, because screen icon Tom Hanks makes his movie debut in this knife-edged shocker.

The up-and-coming legend plays the brief supporting role of Elliot, a psych major whose musings about the nature of fear reinforce the tone of this twisted tale about a sicko who targets brides-to-be... and a detective scrambling to stop the carnage. Wedded bliss can be very short-lived when 'He Knows You're Alone!'

My Impression
I'm a little bit deceived by this one, since I feel it could have been so much better. The problem is that this movie was a victim of the MPAA non sense cutting policy. All the violence is cut and no blood is present and this isn't because I've a cut version of the movie. Seriously, if I watch a movie about a maniac stalker I don't think it's too much to ask a minimum of blood and violence ::)

I like the performance of Caitlin O'Heaney (a very underated actress) and Don Scardino, the opening of the movie is great and Tom Rolfing (the stalker) had a good screen presence even if his role is silent.

Too Bland and generic for my taste, but maybe some of you could like this film.

Title : All Night Long (1992)

Overview
Three high-school students are witnesses to a violent murder. Joined together by this unforgettable experience in a way they cannot understand, their link to the world of violence strengthens when a group of rapists attack one of their female friends. Embracing the shocking underworld of savagery, the three teenagers make a pact to find the rapists and exact revenge for their friend.

My Impression
It's been a while since I've watch this one (at least more than 2 years) and I've obviously forgot that this isn't a typical horror movie. It's more your typical familly friendly japanese movie ;)

Of course this isn't true (at least I hope) since the movie is a "what if?" type of movie, in this case what would you do if your new girlfriend would be raped and murdered by a gang of teenage bad guy? Being a Japanese movie if your answer was "call the police" you are wrong... The real answer : go there with 2 new friends and beat the crap out of them and more. That can be sound like a piece of garbage, but a long time is pass in the film to show the love story between the 2 young protagonists (almost one hour) and this revenge doesn't sound gratuitious. Yes it's bloody and violent, but this isn't without reasons like in the stupid Hostel. You will see that no one can used violence and not be affected by it (it doesn't end well for neither the rape gang and the revenge gang). Some of the acting look over the top, but I see that more as a way to reflect what happen when your brain switch is at the off position.

2 others films were made in that serie, but I haven't see them yet...

I recommand this film, but it isn't a movie for everybody

Title : Kill Syndrome (2006)

Overview
A depraved, inbred familly of degenerate psychopaths led by the grotesque, cannibalistic "freakshow" abduct, torture and kill innocent victims deep in the backwoods of rural Arrowood County. Always recording their crimes on video.

My Impression
The longest 50 minutes of my life... Waste of time this isn't for nothing if this film doesn't even had an imdb entry... It's not a movie at all!!! Everybody shout and shout and shout their lines when they don't miss them, not that it isn't that much of a problem since the script countains only the words fuck and bitch (I haven't count them but they are said certainly more than 500 times in 50 minutes). The movie is badly filmed sometimes the screen is green or red or yellow or normal (for this film, not in the usual sense of this word) for no reasons. No editing is present, they turn off the camera when they have no idea of what to do. The movie had no plot at all, unless kidnaped a girl or a man and torture them cheaply is a plot. Maybe I'm too harsh since the movie had two "subplots". One woman and two men travel, their car broke, the woman goes with one man to find a mechanic, the guy alone is killed in the night, the two others walk in the forest in the day, the dead guy wake up, they continue to walk in the day, the dead guy walk, they argument (they do that since the beginning) and walk, the dead guy is kill again, the other guy fight with the killer, the dead guy looks really dead this time, they continue to fight with some funny slapping sounds, the killer win, the killer hit the looser with something and we never heard about those 3 peoples again. Second subplot : a redneck argument with his trailer trash wife because she wears perfume, he gets angry because she's a fucking no good fucking bitch who doesn't know how to make a fucking dinner for her poor invalid husband (he isn't, he is just a drunk), she cook him a dinner, he isn't happy of his fucking dinner who looks like a fucking slop (??), he hit her because she's a fucking no good whore, later he falls asleep, she hit him one million times with something, God this guy is hard to kill for a puny guy like that, finally after five thousands other hits he die, she decide to saw his body in the bath but she change her mind and get out, the killer take her in his pick-up, she wake up in a very solid chicken wire cage ::), the killer and a fat trailer trash woman (I think it's his sister) tease her, the killer fall (I think she had hit him offscreen), she hit the trailer trash woman and the movie end... They even had the audacity to start this movie with a narration à la Texas Chainsaw Massacre...

Waste of time, but at least you only have the review to read and the trailer to watch. It isn't 50 minutes for you :phew:

It seems that it's over for me this year. I haven't watched an horror film since sunday and I've restart my X-Files watching, so it's obvious that I won't watch one today.

To be honest, I'm not very proud of my performance... Sure I've watched 52 films (2 more than last year), but I've watched 44 of them in the first half of the month. The way I've decided to do it is probably the reason why I wasn't able to maintain my interest. It was just too much average movies for a month. One thing is sure I will do it differently next year and choose my movie.

 = 5
;D = 12
:D = 15
:-\ = 8
 = 6
:yucky: = 8

Sorry for my bad performances :(
I know I've watched a lot, but for me this year is a flop...

And what would I say? I only watched two movies for my October marathon. I wonder why I even bothered starting a thread
I even had prepared a pile of movies I planned to watch, but none of them managed to keep me from watching TV episodes. But on the other hand, I think I set a new personal record for number of watched TV episodes.

I felt bad I had to stop my watching at about half way through the month after the build-up for my marathon we had. But of course the circumstances were beyond my control.

I know I have much to do today... but I am hoping to watch some Halloween episodes of some sitcoms and such today... since I didn't get many (or any?) watched this year. And maybe by this evening fit in a horror movie if I am lucky.
