Carnival of Souls, a review by Antares

Carnival of Souls (1962) 60/100 - Cult classic? OK, I can see why, but it doesn't make it a great film. To be honest, it reminded of a protracted version of "The Hitch-Hiker" episode of The Twilight Zone from its first season with Inger Stevens. Yet, I can see this film's influence in other films that were to be made in the future. Polanski must have seen it before he made Repulsion and maybe Kubrick was influenced by it in The Shining. The one thing I did like and noticed right from the start, was the homage to silent films every time "the Man" appeared. I don't think I could sit through it a second time, but by the end, I wondered what I may have missed in this viewing. There were some very interesting shots used to depict her losing her grip on reality.

My Thoughts

I really enjoyed this movie.  I think the plot works well and is interesting overall even though the Nazi element to it is a bit dated.  There are some suggestive things going on without anything explicit being shown.  The pace is slower, but that works to help set up everything that is going on.  Bergman and Grant are wonderful in their parts and they have a decent amount of chemistry.  Alex works as the villain even though not a lot about him is shared.  The way his mother dominates him did make me think of Norman's relationship with his mother in Psycho..or at least what it was like earlier.  There is a decent amount of suspense and mystery in the movie even though the mystery could have been slightly stronger. 

Overall I really liked this movie and thing it is another very well done Hitchcock movie.

 

I did get a review posted on Epinions today...or yesterday.  Whatever.

Plot:
After witnessing a horrific demonic murder at the side of a Toronto roadway, private investigator Vicki Nelson finds herself on a collision course with another citizen investigating the case. He is Henry Fitzroy - former Duke of Richmond, cutting-edge graphic novelist and 470-year-old vampire.

To solve the brutal murder, Vicki finds herself collaborating, against her better judgement, with the suave and seductive Fitzroy.
