Whale Rider, a review by Rich

dodging sheep in NZ...

A small Maori village faces a crisis when the heir to the leadership of the Ngati Konohi dies at birth and is survived only by his twin sister, Pai. Although disregarded by her grandfather and shunned by the village people, twelve-year-old Pai remains certain of her calling and trains herself in the ways and customs of her people.  With remarkable grace, Pai finds the strength to challenge her family and embraces a thousand years of traditions in order to fulfill her destiny.

Certainly a dvd that would be better understood by a woman, as the underlying theme of the film is the struggle of a girl to be accepted in a mans world. Well crafted, flowed beautifully, and wonderful acting by all involved. Great scenes with the whales, and as a viewer you develop a love/hate relationship with the tyrannical and proud grandfather. A wee bit too slushy for my taste, but I would still recommend a viewing of this with a 5/10.

5/5 Stars

My Thoughts:

The Cove was a milestone for animal rights awareness. These people stopped at nothing to get the footage that they did and were well prepared to enter an extremely dangerous zone. A team was put together including ex military and divers and then the equipment rolled in (all of which had to be snuck into a small hotel in Taiji). They had thermal camera, underwater sound recorders, night vision cameras, and the most brilliant of them all, high definition cameras disguised in false rocks which were planted in the dead of night around the area of slaughter. These rocks were actually created for the team by one of the head molders in the Industrial Light and Magic film visual effects company.

Now I really could go on forever about this documentary but in the end you just have to see it for yourself. I was in tears countless times, as well as often on the edge of my seat as these brave people held somewhat stakeouts in the middle of the night while being followed by Japanese police. I highly recommend that anyone who can get a copy of this film watch it, and then try and show it to their friends.

Pete's Pilots, a review by addicted2dvd

Desperate Housewives
Experience the television phenomenon that has fans cheering and critics raving. "Refreshingly original, bracingly adult and thoroughly delightful, Desperate Housewives is like the answer to a TV prayer you didn't know you'd made," says Robert Bianco of USA TODAY.

Now you can spend the night with the women of Wisteria Lane and relive every minute of the weekly television event that heated up water coolers from coast to coast. With spectacular bonus features, including extended, unrated episodes, this sizzling six-disc set is full of surprises and loaded with entertainment.

PILOT
One bright sunny afternoon on Wisteria lane, housewife and mother Mary Alice Young ended her seemingly perfect life. Now, in death, Mary Alice sees the lives of her four best friends and neighbors, Susan, Gabrielle, Bree and Lynette, and their most intimate secrets. Single mom Susan has a crush on new resident Mike, model-turned-trophey-wife Gabrielle is having an affair with her seventeen-year-old gardner, perfectionist homemaker Bree is driving her family crazy, and former career woman Lynette is stressed beyond belief from her quartet of out-of-control kids. Together these four women try to solve the mystery of what drove Mary Alice to shoot herself.

My Thoughts:
This show is an odd case for me. It is a series I never even considered collecting before. But then I won a copy of season 1 on an online contest. So I check it out.. and found this series is pretty addicting. Once you start watching you just don't want to stop. Then once I finally came to the end of the season I was like that was fun... but I am in no hurry to get season 2. And what happens? Our good friend Roger gives me a copy of season 2! And once again... I am addicted to watching this series till the end of season 2. Now today I watch the pilot episode again... and I can see myself watching this whole 2 seasons that I own once again. And even think about buying the next season.

But it seems like after a day or 2 of not watching this series I tend to forget about it and not worry about the next season any longer.

Now who has season 3 that they want to send me?  :tease:
