The Burning, a review by Rich

Title: The Burning

Movie Count:14
TV Ep. Count:8

Runtime:91
Certificate:R
Year:1981
Genres:Horror

Plot:A group of summer camp pranksters got the scare of their lives when they target the camp's creepy caretaker...and he takes bloody revenge ! "Gruesome" (The Hollywood Reporter) and "stomach churning" (Boxoffice), this terrifying tale is "a brilliant slasher flick [and] gory as hell!" (slasherpool.com)
After a cruel joke goes awry, severly burning him and subjecting him to five years of intensive, unsuccessful skin graft treatments, Cropsy (Lou David) is back at camp...and ready to wreak havoc on those who scarred him! With his hedge clippers in hand, he terrorizes the camp and systematically mutilates each victim. Can a few courageous campres save themself and destroy this demented madman before he kills them all?

My Review:
Funny 80's B movie slasher film, full of nubile young teen girls with perky tits, and jocks and geeks chasing them
Caretaker turns killer with shears and scissors following a prank gone wrong, and he slowly one by one murders his way through the camps guests. Plenty of ketchup and fleshy close-ups, but the gore does not make up for some fairly inept direction and a dot to dot obvious and boring storyline.
Interesting to see young Holly Hunter, Jason Alexander and Fisher Stevens on show.
This would fit nicely into Jimmys current marathon.

To this end, he equips an abandoned tomb in a graveyard into a residence and headquarters and prepares for a new career. With that, he becomes the Spirit, a mysterious crime fighter whose only costume is a blue business suit, fedora hat and a little eye mask. His first major case pits him against P'Gell, a femme fatal who has criminal designs on the city.

My Thoughts:
This is a 1987 TV movie that a friend sent me a copy of. It is off of an old TV recording from when it originally aired. With that being the case I was a little concerned what the quality would be like. Turns out I didn't need to worry. While it was an obvious old recording... it is more then watchable. And something that was an extra bonus to me personally.... he didn't edit out the original run commercials. And I found it oddly fun seeing the commercials that I haven't seen in a good 25 years! It brought back a lot of memories.

The film itself I found to be rather entertaining... well in a cheesy sort of way. The film makes more then one reference to the character (The Spirit) being similar to The Lone Ranger... and I can see their point. What with the similar look to the mask and the fact that Denny Colt is believed to be dead. But with such a cheesy feel to it... it also reminded me a bit of the old '60s Batman series. Speaking of which... I don't know if this TV Movie was supposed to be the start of a TV series that never happened or not... but I believe I would have watched the series if they made it.

Now I want to once again thank the friend of mine for sending me this one. I really did enjoy watching it.... definitely worth the time put in to it. Thanks 'Cat!

Tom's Random Star Trek Reviews, a review by Tom

DS9 1.07 Q-Less
Writer: Gene Roddenberry (Original Characters By), Rick Berman (Original Characters By), Michael Piller (Original Characters By), Robert Hewitt Wolfe (Screenwriter), Hannah Louise Shearer (Original Material By)
Director: Paul Lynch
Cast: Avery Brooks (Commander Sisko), Rene Auberjonois (Odo), Siddig El Fadil (Doctor Bashir), Terry Farrell (Lieutenant Dax), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko), Colm Meaney (Chief O'Brien), Armin Shimerman (Quark), Nana Visitor (Major Kira), Jennifer Hetrick (Vash), John de Lancie (Q), Van Epperson (Bajoran Clerk), Tom McCleister (Kolos), Laura Cameron (Bajoran Woman)

This episode was obviously made to bring in viewers from TNG. Too bad that Q hardly interacts with the DS9 crew. It would have been great to have more scenes between Sisko and Q.
It was a good way to introduce Q to DS9 and at the same time bring the Q/Vash story to a conclusion. Sadly there weren't any other Q episodes in DS9 after this one.
