Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) 95/100 - This is probably my tenth time watching this film and for some strange reason, it really had me in stitches this time. I've always loved this film, but can't understand why I never wrote a review or felt the same way about it in the past. I would give it a perfect score of 100, if it weren't for what I consider Kubrick's sophomoric attempt at humor when he came up with the names of some of the characters. I picture him and whomever he wrote the screenplay with, sitting around a table, drinking heavily and in a moment of stupor bleating out Jack T. Ripper, Burpelson Air Force Base and Bat Guano, thinking how clever he was being. It's kind of the same feeling I get when I watch a Wes Anderson written film. I know it's nitpicking, but for some reason, it has bothered me each time I've watched this movie. But that being said, it's a film I'll always sink my teeth into if it's on TCM, and definitely one of Kubrick's greatest achievements.

Plot:
Dear Viewer,

If you enjoy movies filled with singing rabbits, exploding spaceships, or cheerleaders, you are holding the wrong DVD entirely.

This movie is extremely alarming, an expression which here means " a thrilling misadventure involing three ingenious orphans and a villainous actor named Count Olaf (Carey) who wants their enormous fortune." It includes a suspicious fire, delious pasta, Jim Carey, poorly behaved leaches, an incredibly deadly viper, Meryl Streep, and the voices of an imposter named Jude Law. The only things that could make such a spectacle more upsetting are special features, such as commentary by me or outtakes involving nervous laughter.

I am bound to continue my research into the lives of the Baudelaire orphans, but you are free to seek lighter fare, like blue cheese fondue.

My Thoughts:

I really liked the movie. The review my father posted had one thing correct: it was weird. Oh, and that subbtitles for the baby was funny!!

I don't think this was a very good role for Jim Carrey. There weren't many chances for him to be as zany and outragous as we came to know him, but for such a sinister yet crazy role, who would you recommend? Idk, I guess they did the best they could as far as casting was concerned.

I never read the books, so I'm not sure how dead-on it was. I remember reviewing this before and someone told me it missed adventures and skipped a few books...that or it just wasn't accurate. I can't remember to be honest. I'll leave it to that because, as I said, I haven't read it.

Still, I am very into weird!! I think the movie was very entertaining. An inventor, a reader, and a baby who bites things! Above anything else this is a family-centered murder mystery. (Not so much a mystery as a "This guy did it! Why won't you believe us??" movie) All in all, one of my favorite movies in my collection!

"Stargate SG-1" Marathon, a review by DJ Doena

Synopsis: Caused by Nirrti's experiments a tumor is growing in Jonas's brain and it's growing fast. But this tumor has a side effect: Jonas has flashes of future events that come true. But the tumor also endangers his life.

My Opinion: I stand corrected, they pick up the story of Jonas's DNA again. But the episode was average. Went to a planet, helped a people, killed a Goa'uld, departured.

Synopsis: Daniel appears to both Skaara and Jack to warn them that Anubis will come to Abydos to find the "Eye of Ra". This would allow him to build a powerful weapon. SG-1 wants to forstall him.

My Opinion: A good conclusion to the Abydos storyline, I especially liked the reunion of Jack and Daniel. What amazes me with these stories is where these super-weapons always come from. It's highly unlikely that none of the other System Lords tried to find it, especially when two of the "Eyes" belonged to Ra and Osiris. Ra has been dead for a while and Osiris was out of the game for more than a millennia. Apophis who also possessed one should have been more than interested to get these, yet his former First Prime Teal'c didn't even know they existed.
Anyway, the episode was good, particularly because they didn't defeat Anubis in some surprising way.

The Season - My Opinion: The season was mixed. Jonas brought new life into the team and I liked him end-to-end. But there were a number of episodes I didn't like that much and I even liked the clip show Disclosure more than (for example) Shadow Play. But they still managed to create a good enemy, after the "abdication" of Apophis.
