Hot Rod, a review by KinkyCyborg

Title:Hot Rod

Rating: PG-13
Length: 88 Min.
Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 2.35:1
Audio: English: Dolby Digital: 5.1, French: Dolby Digital: 5.1, Spanish: Dolby Digital: 5.1, Commentary: Dolby Digital: 2-Channel Stereo
Subtitles: English, French, Spanish

Stars:
Andy Samberg
Jorma Taccone
Bill Hader

Isla Fisher

Plot:
Andy Samberg '(Saturday Night Live)' stars as Rod Kimble, a stuntman with a fake mustache and a dream, in this outrageous comedy so unpredictable you won't know what hit you! Rod has never landed a jump without wiping out. His family and friends think he's a joke. And, to top it off, his stepfather Frank uses him as his own personal punching bag. But he's not going to let a few minor problems keep him from the biggest stunt of his life!

Co-starring Isla Fisher '(Wedding Crashers)' and Ian McShane '(Shrek The Third), Hot Rod' is "very, very funny from start to finish" and scales the heights of hilarity as Rod defies death to win the money, win the girl and, ultimately, win some respect.

Extras:
Scene Access
Audio Commentary
Feature Trailers
Deleted Scenes
Featurettes
Outtakes/Bloopers
Closed Captioned

My Thoughts:

Quite possibly the dumbest movie I've ever watched. Took me almost all week to watch it as I could only stomach it in 20 minute doses. Sissy Spacek and Ian McShane should be ashamed for signing on for this one. Lorne Michaels needs to learn that not every SNL character or alumni will work on the big screen. I'm actually quite stunned that this received 6.5/10 on IMDB.

The only 2 positive things I can say about it are it had good 80's music and Isla Fisher is gorgeous.

Young Frankenstein, a review by Rich

20/11

Young Frankenstein

Mel Brooks' monstrously crazy tribute to Mary Shelley's classic pokes hilarious fun at just about every Frankenstein movie ever made. Summoned by a will to his late grandfather's castle in Transylvania, young Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) soon discovers the scientist's step-by-step manual explaining how to bring a corpse to life. Assisted by the hunchback Igor (Marty Feldman) and the curvaceous Ings (Teri Garr), he creates a monster (Peter Boyle) who only wants to be loved.

I will no doubt be unpopular by questioning the hype on this film, I'd read in so many places how funny this is, top 10 comedy movie etc etc. I thought it was plainly boring and self-absorbing.
Perhaps Mel Brooks is like marmite, you either love him or hate him. Unfortunately I veer on the side of disliking his comedies and him (except Blazing Saddles strangely enough  ).
The jokes are banal, adolescent and obvious, I am surprised they didn't use canned laughter. Large gaps in-between laughs made the film seem stretched and quite a viewing ordeal.

The positives:
Shot like the original movie in 1:85 ratio it was visually appealing. Teri Garr - great knockers (Shank you Doctor Fronkensteen), and Marty Feldman (Are his eyes really like that?) were perfect in their roles.

Perhaps this is just dated and the concept overdone, if I had seen it in the 70's when it was fresh and unique it may have made a much more positive impact on me. However, for me today on first viewing, this was a

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Marathon, a review by DJ Doena

Season 3

Disc 1

The Search, Part I
Synopsis: During his stay at the Utopia Planitia ship yards (prior to his assignment to DS9), Sisko has helped designing and building a ship whose sole purpose was to fight the Borg: The Defiant. It's over-powered and over-gunned for a ship this size but now DS9 needs it. And the feature list has been updated. In the hope to find the Founders of the Dominion without having to engage in battle the Defiant has got a cloaking system - sponsored by the Romulan Empire. Sisko hopes to contact the Founders and show them that the Federation is no enemy of them.

My Opinion: From a diplomatic and tactical POV this was a stupid idea. If you'd want to negotiate with the leaders of an enemy force, would you take your biggest gunship and try to sneak into enemy territory? It would be like taking a B-2 Spirit, landing it on the Red Square and trying to talk to Khrushchev. But I liked the general idea of the Defiant from the beginning. The Star Trekian universe has never been a very peaceful one and the Federation is surrounded mostly by hostile forces. I wonder how many Starfleet ships have been destroyed in the cardassian border wars because they weren't really equipped to fight in a war.

The Search, Part II
Synopsis: Unfortunately the cloaking system didn't help in the end and when the crew returns to DS9, the Vorta are already there and they negotiate with Starfleet. But Sisko and the others become more and more uneasy because of where these negotiations are going. Meanwhile Kira and Odo are still in the GQ because Odo has finally found his people.

My Opinion:
The House of Quark
Synopsis: A drunken Klingon attacks Quark in his bar but accidentally kills himself. But Quark tells a story how he heroically killed the warrior in a battle of life and death. And ironically, some Klingons actually want that he sticks to that story, although for different reasons. And suddenly Quark finds himself as the head of a klingon house.

My Opinion: I loved this episode. Quark and Grillka were great together and the clashing of ferengi and klingon culture was also fun to watch. But divorce seems to be painful. ;) And it was nice to see chancellor Gowron again although I have to admit the more klingon episodes I watch the less I can wait for Martok to make his appearance.

Equilibrium
Synopsis: Dax begins to behave irrationally and aggressively. Additionally she has hallucinations. Bashir fears that the symbiosis is breaking apart and that they may lose Jadzia. Sisko and Bashir return with her to Trill but the mystery is getting bigger instead of being solved. Something isn't right with one of Dax's previous hosts.

My Opinion: This was an average episode. The 'revelation' wasn't that interesting and the episode hadn't much plot at all.
