Gangs Of New York, a review by RichTitle: Gangs Of New York Runtime:166 Certificate:18 Year:2002 Genres:Drama, Action, War Plot:Martin Scorsese's GANGS OF NEW YORK introduces today's world to the Five Points, a dark corner of the city known to New Yorkers of long ago as the centre of vice and chaos. Into this frontier of extreme lawlessness arrives the young Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio). Amsterdam is the orphaned son of the slain Priest Vallon (Liam Neeson) - once chief warrior of the Dead Rabbits gang that rallied the Irish immigrants of the Five Points. Amsterdam has returned to the Five Points to hunt down his father's killer. His target is William Cutting AKA "Bill the Butcher" (Daniel Day-Lewis), who has since become the merciless new leader of the neighbourhood, a Nativist who detests the newly arrived immigrants and is determined to fend off all so-called "foreign invaders". My Review: You would of hoped that a big movie like this which was condemned as being poor quality on dvd, would have been remastered for blu-ray. Sadly not, there is still problems with hues, ghosting and shadow on the edges of the picture, and it is very noticeable specifically in the big fight scenes. The audio is first-rate and really loud, had to turn amp way down more than usual. For the film itself, it has many flaws of course most noticibly DiCrapio playing a hard Irish immigrant ( ) but it is a fun action and bloodthirsty tale, with Daniel Day Lewis playing a wonderful role, and it is one of my guilty pleasures. My Rating (From Riches Random Reviews on December 30th, 2009) Windtalkers, a review by addicted2dvdWindtalkers In the brutal World War II Battle of Saipan, Sergeant Jo Enders (Academy Award Winner Nicolas Cage) guards - and ultimately befriends - Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach), a young Navajo trained in the one wartime code never broken by the enemy, the Navajo Code. But if Yahzee shoudl fall into Japanese hands, how far will Enders go to save the military's most powerful secret? My Thoughts: This is one of the several I have that I never seen before. But I had always thought the trailer looked good. And I did enjoy this movie quite a bit. I didn't realize until I watched it that this movie was based on a true story. I never personally been much of a fan of Nicolas Cage... but never disliked him either. I do think he did a fine job in this movie. I would definitely recommend this movie... especially if you like war movies. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From What Movies I Been Watching on July 24th, 2009) "Due South" marathon, a review by RickThe Wild Bunch My favorite episode so far! Comedy, drama, suspense and action all rolled up into one. It would have made a good 2 part story. They could have expanded a bit on the other dogs missing and how Diefenbaker and his gang got involved and decided to take down the dog-napping ring. Rating The Blue Line Meh Not good, not bad, just there. Good to see Ray with his car again, although it does take a beating. Rating: (From "Due South" marathon on July 19th, 2009) |
