This film was unsettling - voyeurism, torture, sex, sadism, James Woods in a strong performance, and Cronenbergs direction all gelling together into a fascinating viewing experience, albeit not the most pleasant.
Watching contestants humiliated on TV has now become a common theme today, so this film in many ways was ahead of it's time. Certainly the whole storyline of the movie is incredibly interesting, I assume it was a demonstration of the negative effect of the television on modern society, but as always with Cronenberg you are never 100% sure what you are meant to take away from one of his films?
Disturbing movie, I am not sure if this should be classified as horror, sci-fi or arthouse? definately worthy of its cult tag, I personally didn't love it, but it left a mark.

Although a little on the slow side, I can appreciate the effort. For its time nice special effect, which they went on to milk to death by a slow journey through the cloud. The pacing is better in this Director's Edition than in the original cut (at least of what I remember of the original cut).
In the beginning of the movie we also got a nice, long model shot of the Enterprise. After all they flew around it for at least five minutes
The score is great and saves the long effect shots. The theme is so good, that they used it as the opening theme of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and after hearing it now countless times, I am still not tired of it.

What I do not understand: They knew that the transporters are acting up. This is why Kirk took the shuttle. A few minutes after Kirk boarded Enterprise, they were using the transporters again and lost two people this way. How careless can you be?

5. LOST BOYS
While cleaning the basement of an old inn, Melinda finds the lost spirits of three boys that died in an orphanage fire 50 years ago. She must help the boys pass on before the inn is destroyed and they become eternally earth-bound spirits.

My Thoughts:
This remains to be one of my favorite episode. I really liked the story behind it... even if it was obvious who the old man that bought the old inn was.

6. HOMECOMING
Melinda assists an upset teenage ghost and learns something that will affect the lives of everyone the boy left behind.

My Thoughts:
Another good episode... deals with a teen trying to find his birth mother but dies before he gets the chance.

7. HOPE AND MERCY
A woman who died during pregnancy can't cross over until her husband stops blaming himself. Plus, Andrea meets a con artist who discovers a surprise about her past.

My Thoughts:
A good... but somewhat standard episode. But I did enjoy the set up for the next episode at the end of this one.

8. ON THE WINGS OF A DOVE
Five years after his father's death, Jim begins acting strangely. Melinda notices and believes the problem is caused by his tortured spirit. Painful memories are brought back when she is surprised by a visit from a friend (Estella Warren).

My Thoughts:
This episode was enjoyable... was good to see Melinda's husband more in the thick of things. Now he gets an idea of what Melinda has to endure.
