The Karate Kid, a review by addicted2comics

Title: The Karate Kid
Year: 2010
Director: Harald Zwart
Rating: PG
Length: 140 Min.

Stars:
Jaden Smith
Jackie Chan
Taraji P. Henson
Wenwen Han
Rongguang Yu

Plot:
12-year-old Dre Parker could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts "the karate kid" on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han, who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

My Thoughts:

Wow. I didn't exspect this!

They changed a lot of things. The place (that didn't concern me much, story stays true no matter where it is), the fact that they changed Mr. Miyagi's name. (That had me a little worried) Actually, that was about all they changed. I know, I know, he's supposed to be the Karate Kid, not the Kung Fu Kid, I know some people get on it with that, but the way I see it is karate is a generic term, and kung fu falls under that category.

The truth is, I have no reasoning why this movie is all that good. The main story is the same as the original, though they used different training exercises, the love interest is mainly the same, the challenge is the same. I suppose the modern setting and a younger Karate Kid simply added spark!! Awesome remake!!!  (and I don't say that often!!)

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

Dracula, a review by GSyren

TitleDracula (US: Horror of Dracula)
Year1958
DirectorTerence Fisher
StarsPeter Cushing, Christopher Lee, Michael Gough
OverviewChristopher Lee and Peter Cushing, Britain's premier masters of the macabre, bring the Horror of Dracula to vivid, full-color death in this retelling of Bram Stoker's spellbinding vampire tale. Dracula (Lee), a centuries-old nobleman damned to an eternal half-life, travels from his native Transylvania to London. In the lurid nightlife of his adopted city, he finds new victims. He also finds Dr. Van Helsing (Cushing), a scientist who becomes the Count's implacable foe in a deadly game of bat-and-mouse.
My thoughtsHammer's first Dracula outing changed forever how Dracula was portraid in movies. This is Christopher Lee's cinematic breakthrough. Before this he had only played minor parts, and the monster in Curse of Frankenstein, but this was the first time that he really got a chance to shine. And playing against him is the great Peter Cushing. Some have complained that Jimmy Sangster's script leaves out and/or changes too much of Bram Stoker's story. But that's unfair because it's necessary to transform a story when adapting a book. The latest Blu-Ray release of Dracula is a great restoration of an old classic, and includes two short sequences that was thought to be lost, but was found in a damaged Japanese print. A great classic film, and some very good extras makes this a must for serious film collectors. Unfortunately this release seems to be region B only, but I assume it will be released in the US eventually.

Audio: English: Dolby Digital Stereo, Spanish: Dolby Digital Stereo
Subtitles:

Plot:Extras:
2 Collectible Art Cards
DVD-ROM Content
Featurettes
Production Notes

My Thoughts:
After having it already for a few years, I finally came around continuing with the next volume of the classic He-Man series. I still enjoy watching it. Even though the animation is very limited, I like how much they got out of reusing a lot of stock footage. Filmation series are known to be animated completely in the US without out-sourcing to Korea or such. And having almost 70 episodes per season, it is such a great task that they managed to produce such a continuesly fun series that way.
Also I never got tired of the He-Man theme music.
