Wings of Desire, a review by Antares

Wings of Desire (1987) 3.5/5 - I actually watched this film about a month ago and forgot to write a review on it. Now that four weeks have passed by, I am at a loss to think of anything in this film that was truly memorable. As I was watching it, it held my curiosity and there were some truly beautiful scenes, but as a whole, I will probably never watch it again. Bruno Ganz was great as can be expected, and I loved looking at Solveig Dommartin. It's a shame she died so young. Sorry if there's not much written here, but the film just didn't grab me. I liked it, but barely.

When his usual intelligence sources fail, James Bond (Agent 007) enlists the aid of crime boss Draco to track down Ernst Stavro Blofeld, head of the evil SPECTRE organization. The trail leads to the mountains of Switzerland, where Bond goes undercover in Blofeld''s hi-tech headquarters. He encounters a bevy of seductive women, but none more beautiful than Draco''s daughter, Tracy, who wins 007 over with her fervent independence, caustic wit and love of adventure. Bond pledges his eternal devotion to her, but there are more immediate concerns: Blofeld is poised to unleash horrific germ warfare weaponry that will endanger every living thing on earth. Bond''s adventures hurl him through artillery-laden ski pursuits, and a dramatic avalanche drive

Unlike a stereotypical Bond, this was very close to the book, Lazenby was a bit one-dimensional but in a film with a gritty plot, actual spy work, emotions and vulnerability, it worked ok. Perhaps Georges downfall for his future as 007 was simply he isn't hard enough, he lacks a certain edge when it comes to physicality and presence.
Kojak is not Blofeld, I much preferred Donald Pleasance in that role. Diana Rigg a passable Bond girl.
This was back to basics with Bond having to save the world with wit, charm and intelligence, and very few gadgets to assist, which is in line with Flemings original book. The music is one of the better offerings in the whole series, and the stunts and effects do not suffer overly from dating. The dark ending I thought could have been worked better, and as we know we now have the next offering with Connerys return to avenge Blofeld.

I was looking forward to this one since I first saw the revised opening theme music in Bollywood style on Youtube. It made the impression to me that this episode is done with some affection to Bollywood. Also I thought it would take place on a Bollywood movie set (which would haven't been that far-fetched because Bollywood likes to go shoot abroad). But sadly, this all wasn't the case. They just called it "Bollywood Homicide" because Indians are involved. There was a Bollywood dance routine, but just a small rehearsal with some simple choreography. Not really worth of Bollywood. As was the music used (though you could faintly hear a song from Kabhi Khuchi Kabhie Gham in the background in one scene).
It would have been the perfect chance to invite some Bollywood actors (even if only from the B- or C-List), but instead we got some unknown American actors with Indian heritage. The only one known to me was Sendhil Ramamurthy from Heroes. But I never really liked him.
Also the mystery was nothing special. I knew from the first appearance of the perpetrator that she was the one.
