The Call of Cthulhu, a review by addicted2dvd
Stars: Matt Foyer as The Man John Bolen as The Listener Ralph Lucas as Professor Angell Chad Fifer as Henry Wilcox Susan Zucker as Landlady Kalafatic Poole as Bartender Plot: Written in 1926, just before the advent of "talking" pictures, The Call of Cthulhu is one of the most famous and influential tales of H. P. Lovecraft, the father of gothic horror. Now the story is brought richly to life in the style of a classic 1920s silent movie, with a haunting original symphonic score. Using the "Mythoscope" process ~ a mix of modern and vintage techniques ~ the filmmakers have worked to create the most authentic and faithful screen adaptation of a Lovecraft story yet attempted. My Thoughts: I basically found this one to be more on the weird side. But to be fair I really should give it another chance as I did have to get up and miss some of it. Between that and having a bit of trouble keeping up with the subtitles... so needless to say I wasn't able to take it all in. But there I did get to see some pretty good scenes in with what I found to just be weird. Though I do think it is worth giving another chance and hopefully that would raise my rating a bit. My Thoughts: This is a movie I have seen before... but not since getting the DVD recently. It is the first time I seen it since it originally came out. I did buy a DVD used from a local video store before it went out of business... but unfortunately the copy that I bought was messed up pretty bad and you could barely watch the disc. But thankfully a friend had an extra copy they could send me to replace it with. Before watching Showtime I looked up some reviews to see what other people were saying about this one. It quickly became apparent that it isn't much liked. Which I just don't understand. As I really did enjoy every minute of it. Sure it isn't an award winning... thought provoking epic. But in my opinion it does what it sets out to do... and does it well. It entertains. Sometimes just a fun... leave your brain at the door... popcorn flick is all you need. And Showtime is just that. This is of course one of those buddy cop movies with lots of action and a good amount of laughs. I thought DeNiro and Murphy made a great team. I have always liked both actors. Murphy is funny as always... and DeNiro is as enjoyable as always. Being able to do comedy as well as he can the serious work. I think if you are looking for just a fun way to escape real life for 90 minutes this is a good way to do so. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From What Movies I Been Watching on June 3rd, 2011) Tom's Random Star Trek Reviews, a review by TomStar Trek: Voyager 7.10 Shattered Writer: Michael Taylor (Screenwriter), Mike Sussman (Original Material By), Michael Taylor (Original Material By) Director: Terry Windell Cast: Kate Mulgrew (Captain Kathryn Janeway), Robert Beltran (Chakotay), Roxann Dawson (B'Elanna Torres), Robert Duncan McNeill (Tom Paris), Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Robert Picardo (The Doctor), Tim Russ (Tuvok), Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Garrett Wang (Harry Kim), Martin Rayner (Dr. Chaotica), Manu Intiraymi (Icheb), Scarlett Pomers (Naomi Wildman), Nicholas Worth (Lonzak), Martha Hackett (Seska), Mark Bennington (Adult Icheb), Vanessa Branch (Adult Naomi), Anthony Holiday (Rulat), Terrell Clayton (Andrews), Majel Barrett (Computer Voice (voice)) Voyager gets split into different time areas and only Chakotay can travel between those areas. It's fun to revisit instances of Voyager's past this way and get some climpses of a possible future. Though it's stupid how Chakotay refuses to tell Janeway at the end about his experience, citing the Temporal Prime Directive. But he had no problems telling Janeway of the past a lot of stuff about the future (even though as they later find out she will forget it anyway). Telling Janeway about his experience wouldn't pollute the time line as she already knows everything which there is to know about. So he could just as easily have explained to her his actions.
