I Am From Titov Veles, a review by Danae Cassandra

Where We Are: Macedonia

What We Watched:

Jas sum od Titov Veles (I Am From Titov Veles)
Year of Release: 2007
Directed By: Teona Strugar
Starring: Labina Mitevska, Ana Kostovska, Nikolina Kujaca, Xhevdet Jashari
Genre: Drama

Overview:
Set in the quaint but scarred town of Veles, three sisters long to escape the suffocating environment of their dying community.  Burdened by memories of their late father, each chooses a different path:  Sapho struggles to secure a visa to Greece, Slavica desperately searches for a rich husband, and Afrodita harbors hopes for love and children.  In this contemporary story of urban decay, director Teona Strugar Mitevska blends stark realism with memorable performances to create a vivid landscape of life and longing in post-communist Macedonia.

My Thoughts:
Watching this film, I am reminded of coal country - eastern Kentucky, West Virginia - except instead of coal, here we have a factory that brings jobs and poisons the land and people.  We have a bleak crumbling infrastructure people are desperate to escape from - into dreams, drugs, sex, or to actually grasp the ability to leave for better opportunity.  This was a really well done character study, both of the sisters themselves and the character of the place.  You can feel the despair and the hopelessness roil off the screen.  If that didn't say it - this isn't a happy story, and it doesn't have a happy ending.  But it has something to say about life and living, and that always makes for a film worth seeing.

Bechdel Test:  Pass

Overall: 3.5/5

Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter, a review by dfmorgan

Shrek Forever After: The Final Chapter

Year: 2010
Director: Mike Mitchell
Cast: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz

OverviewWatched: 22nd. Jan 2011
My Thoughts: The fourth and supposedly final chapter in the Shrek saga. Shrek (Mike Myers) is suffering from mid-life angst where every day has settled down into a standard routine. Matters come to a head and Shrek signs a contract with Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) whereby Shrek is granted a day to relive his days as a feared ogre and Rumpelstiltskin receives a day from Shrek. However the day that Rumpelstiltskin receives from Shrek has ramifications far and beyond what Shrek imagined and now Shrek must try to stop Rumpelstiltskin's machinations. Overall I did enjoy this film and it seemed to me to be better than the third but still not as good as the first or second.

My Rating: An enjoyable 3

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

12. The Eyes Have It (2/5/95)
Flying blind. A sceming optometrist develops an ultraviolet-ray device that renders Superman sightless. Then Lois is kidnapped - and Superman feels powerless to help her.

My Thoughts:
This is a good episode. They made it entertaining to watch a blind Superman.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

13. The Phoenix (2/12/95)
With a little help from his friends, Lex Luthor returns from the dead. But he wants more than just life, much more - wealth, power and former bride-to-be Lois Lane.

My thoughts:
The return of Lex Luthor. This is also the (I believe) final episode that has Denise Crosby as a guest star... playing Luthor's doctor. An episode I enjoyed.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

14. Top Copy (2/19/95)
"Clark Kent is Superman!" A hotshot television journalist, who's also an assassin for Intergang, discovers Clark's secret identity...and reveals it on nationwide TV.

My Thoughts:
This is a very good episode that guest stars Racquel Welch as the reporter that discover's that Clark is Superman. Lois and Clark is still dancing around whether or not they should take their relation to the next level. I forgot how long it took for those 2 to get together. And that isn't even including the troubles they had getting to their wedding.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5

15. Return of the Prankster (2/28/95)
The Prankster and the president. Armed with a ray that temporarily freezes people, the Prankster breaks out of jail. His diabolical goal: kidnap the president and hold him for ransom.

My Thoughts:
Bronson Pinchot is back as the Prankster. This is another fun episode. Looked like a lot of fun to me... being able to freeze people and then manipulate them anyway you wish. Once again Bronson Pinchot was great as the prankster.

My Rating:
Out of a Possible 5
