Police Academy, a review by Dragonfire

Police Academy
The call went out. The recruits came in. No longer would police cadets have to meet standards of height, weight and other requirements. Brains were optional too. Can't spell IQ? Don't know the number 911? No matter. Police Academy grads are ready to uphold law and disorder.

Building on a nightsticks-and-slapstick tradition going back to the Keystone Cops, Police Academy spawned 6 sequels plus 2 TV series (one animated, one live-action). Now the popular debut film calls for backup, adding arresting 20th-anniversary DVD extras. Join Mahoney (Steve Guttenberg), Thompson (Kim Cattrall), Harris (G.W. Bailey), Hightower (Bubba Smith), Jones (Michael Winslow), Lassard (George Gaynes) and more. They're not the Five-O. They're the Five Uh-Oh. They make the world a funnier place.

I decided to watch this one again.  Yes it is silly, but it is entertaining.  This one is a decent choice when in the mood for something silly.  The characters are likable for the most part, and very entertaining.  Harris isn't exactly a nice guy, but he always cracks me up, especially when Mahoney plays some tricks on him.  The acting isn't the greatest, but it isn't horrible either.  The DVD I have has a few interesting extras.  Some things in the movie are a bit dated, but it is still funny and entertaining.

I did get a review posted on Epinions a few years ago.

My Thoughts:
As family get-together drama goes, it is a good movie. These type of movies just don't seem to be my taste. I bought this one years ago for my lesbian movie collection. I had started to watch this one then, but didn't get through it. Now I finally got around to watch it completely, after I learned that it was directed by Gurinder Chadha, who also did Bend It Like Beckham and Bride & Prejudice.
This movie is about four families and their separate Thanksgiving family gatherings. These four family stories intertwine which works surprisingly good.

Xena: Warrior Princess Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 2: Disc 6

21. Lost Mariner
After a shipwreck, Gabrielle finds herself aboard the cursed vessel of the lost mariner Cycrops. Soon, she and Xena are confronted by pirates and the nasty god Poseidon.

My Thoughts:
I like this one... good story with the cursed ship. And I like seeing Tony Todd in an episode. Someone I know from several horror movies. I had to laugh when Xena showed Gabrielle the pressure point in her wrist to stop sea sickness... and Gabrielle just about beats her wrist all to hell when someone tried to give her some squid to eat.

My Rating:

22. Comedy of Eros
Draco is threatening to sell some temple maidens into slavery and Xena is trying to stop him. Trouble is, she's also falling in love with him. Meanwhile (and just as strange), Gabrielle is falling for Joxer.

My Thoughts:
Not a bad episode... but not really good either. They (obviously) tried for a comedy... but I personally just didn't find it that funny. Silly to a point. But there was nothing here that actually made me laugh.

My Rating:

Over-all this is a good season. Though I do think the first season was a little better.
