Kill, Baby...Kill!, a review by Jimmy

MOVIE / DVD INFO:

Title: Kill, Baby...Kill! (1966)

Genre: Horror
Director: Mario Bava
Rating: Unrated
Length: 1h23
Video: Widescreen
Audio: Italian and English
Subtitles: English

Stars:
Giacomo Rossi-Stuart
Erika Blanc
Fabienne Dali'
Piero Lulli
Luciano Catenacci

Plot:
'Giacomo Rossi-Stuart' and 'Erica Blanc' star in 'Bava's' final gothic masterpiece, the hallucinatory tale of a remote village tormented by the specter of a dead little girl. Despite it's threadbare budget, Bava creates an unprecedented world of baroque dread, mesmerizing disorientation and explosive color whose direct influence would be seen in films by 'Fellini', 'Scorsese', 'Argento', 'David Lynch' and 'Guillermo Del Toro'. More than 40 years later, it remains one of the most beautiful and unnerving horror experiences of all time.

My Thoughts:
This movie is almost perfect untill the end that remove all the sense to what happen before. What we got here is pretty much a ghost story revenge mixed with middle age superstitions. I see it as an allegory of an encounter between the modern world (the doctor and the inspector) and the primitive world (the cursed village). For most of the film we see that the modern world had no power over the curse (in fact the doctor is responsible of two deaths himself) and even if the curse is beaten at the end (I don't think it's a big spoiler for anyone) the modern world had nothing to do with this victory. Contrary to most of the Italian movies the cast here is 100% Italian (Erica Blanc is Italian and Max Lawrence is an alias for Luciano Catenacci), so the italian track is the one to go with. Not surprisingly the doctor think he is better that he really is (he insults the villagers belief, he is rude with the innkeepers and doesn't respect any of the citizens) and honestly I don't see him as the hero of the story. In fact the real hero is Ruth who represents the old and primitive way.

Like any Bava's movies there are a lot of beautifull image on the screen. By exemple the chase scene already mentions previously by Achim, the use of the spiral staircase in the escape of Monica or the general emptiness mood that we feel about the village (we don't really see anyone having a normal life in the street). The acting is good, but Erica Blanc gets really on my nerve (she overact and never look like the cultivated and the educated woman that her character is supposed to be). The musical score add a lot to the mysterious and frightening mood of the movie. Like I've said this is almost a perfect movie untill the end, not that it's a stupid one but it's a confusing one that remove a lot of sense to what had happens before.

My Thoughts:

OK... I kinda have mixed feelings here. On the one hand I enjoyed the styory they were telling here. On the other it did get ratherf weird in parts. And while I would say over all it was good, I am not sure it was best picture winner good. At least not in my opinion. Though I did like the cast... and do like that Jamie Lee Curtis got the win for best supporting actress from this film. I have always been a fan of hers. Over all I would say I liked it. Especially for the price I paid... $1.75 for the 4K release brand new at a pawn shop! I would recommend, with caution... as I said it does get weird in parts.

Smallville Marathon, a review by addicted2dvd

Season 6: Disc 2

4. Arrow
While attending a fundraiser, Lois witnesses the Green Arrow steal a rare diamond necklace off Martha's neck and vows to find the man behind the costume.

My Thoughts:
Good episode... this is the first real look at The Green Archer. was a fun episode... though I have to admit I was expecting a little more for his introduction. Basically it was good... but I was expecting great.

5. Reunion
As teenagers, Lex and Oliver went to the same prep school, where Oliver and his friends bullied Lex and his friend Duncan. Lex eventually turned on Duncan to gain their acceptance, prompting Duncan to throw himself off the roof. Lex and Oliver return to the school for a reunion and are startled when Oliver's old pals are killed in violent and mysterious accidents that point to Duncan.

My Thoughts:
Funny... I remember when this one first aired that I wasn't to impressed with it... but now seeing it on DVD... I found I enjoyed it much more then I did on it's original run. I found it to have a little feel of a haunted house/ghost type story... as they lead you to believe it was possible at first. Definitely enjoyed it better the second time around!

6. Fallout
Clark is thrilled when he learns Raya managed to escape from the Phantom Zone and has come to see him in Smallville. The two grow close and Raya shows Clark how to restore power to the Fortress of Solitude. However, Baern, a killer who also escaped from the Phantom Zone, takes on both Raya and Clark as he seeks revenge for his imprisonment.

My Thoughts:
This one was a good episode.... not only does Clark go against one of the freed phantoms... but also learns more about his father... his home planet and how to bring back the Fortress of Solitude from Raya. enjoyed every minute of this one.

Disc 2 Extras:

Smallville Legends: The Oliver Queen Chronicles
A short 6 episode animated feature to tell the history of The Green Arrow. Was a lot of fun to watch... really enjoyed it.

The Making of Smallville Legends: The Oliver Queen Chronicles
Decent featurette... but nothing I would watch again... but was a fairly cool watch for one time.

Smallville Legends: Justice and Doom
This was pretty cool...made up to look like an animated comic book... but I lost interest pretty fast since I am a fairly slow reader... it got pretty boring to me having to pause it every several seconds so I could read the speech bubbles. Only ended up watching the first episode (was divided in 5 parts).

Deleted Scenes'
had a single deleted scene for 2 of the 3 episodes on this disc... a deleted scene for Arrow and Fallout. Nothing that surprises me that it was cut... but still nice to have as an extra.
