Johnny English, a review by TomTitle: Johnny English Year: 2002 Director: Peter Howitt Rating: FSK-6 Length: 84 Min. Video: Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85 Audio: German: Dolby Digital 5.1 , English: Dolby Digital 5.1 , German: DTS 5.1 Subtitles: English, German Stars: Rowan Atkinson John Malkovich Natalie Imbruglia Plot: Johnny English, a British secret agent who dreams of rising beyodn his menial job within the MI-7 organization, is hired to protect the Crown Jewels after all the other agents are bumped off. When the jewels are stolen, he eventually uncovers a plot to replace England's monarch with what the British fear the most: a French king. Extras: Deleted Scenes DVD-ROM Content Featurettes Interactive Game Scene Access Trailers My Thoughts: Edward Blackadder meets James Bond. It is a decent James Bond parody. Not as over the top as similar parodies (like the Leslie Nielsen one). Rowan Atkinson does fit well in the role. Sadly the screenplay is rather average. This movie could have been much more.Rating: (From Tom's Random Reviews on November 2nd, 2008) Hotel Transylvania, a review by Danae CassandraHotel Transylvania Year of Release: 2012 Starring: Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Kevin James Directed By: Genndy Tartakovsky Genre: Comedy, Horror Overview: Welcome to Hotel Transylvania, Dracula's lavish five-stake resort, where monsters and their families can live it up and no humans are allowed. One special weekend, Dracula (Adam Sandler) has invited all his best friends - Frankenstein and his wife, the Mummy, the Invisible Man, the Werewolf family, and more - to celebrate his beloved daughter Mavis's (Selena Gomez) 118th birthday. For Dracula catering to all of these legendary monsters is no problem but the party really starts when one ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel and changes everything! My Thoughts: Another really fun film. I'm standing by my statement in my review of Paranorman that one of the things Hollywood is doing right these days is animated movies. The animation is good, the jokes were funny (and only one was a fart joke too!), there was something for kids and adults, and there were several good messages as well (those we fear also fear us, you have to let your children grow up, and you have to have fun to really live). Sure, there was a lot that was predictable, and it did fall into a trope that I see a lot these days and really don't like (shlub dude gets hot chick*), but overall the faults are unimportant - I laughed a lot and had a good time, and that's what's important in films like this. Glad to have it in the collection, and I'd recommend it for everyone. Bechdel Test: Fail Overall: 3.5/5 *the reason this annoys me is that I never see the reverse (From Hotel Transylvania on June 18th, 2013) Birthday Marathon, a review by addicted2dvdAll in the Family: Season 2 The Elevator Story The Bunkers are celebrating Edith's birthday at an Italian restaurant in the city when Archie discovers that Edith failed to mail out a payment to the insurance company. This leads him to run across the street to drop it off. However, on his way he gets stuck in an elevator along with a pregnant Puerto Rican and her husband, an aging hippie, and an erudite black businessman. My Thoughts: This is a good classic sitcom. One that definitely pushes the limits of the time... let alone something you would see in today's politically correct times. It was really funny to see Archie Bunker stuck in an elevator with some of the people he hates the most. Let alone Edith going heavy on the wine at dinner waiting for Archie to get back. My Rating: Out of a Possible 5 (From Birthday Marathon on May 30th, 2009) |
