Gotcha Dsig! And i gotta agree Silence! Platoon as one of my favourites.
And i really liked We Were Soldiers aswell. I liked what Gibson & co did with it.

I cant decide on wich movie is my absolute favourite between, 'Platoon' 'Casablanca' And 'The Bridge On River Kwai'
Those are my top 3 movies of all times. Never get tired of watching them.
We'll Always Have Paris.

A few more from my collection (I wish I had used tags from the beginning!): Casualties of War, Hamburger Hill and Tigerland

Piffi

What did you think about 'Tigerland' Kate?
I see its "fairly" new for a Vietnam war movie.
And i see that Colin Farrell is playing in it aswell.
We'll Always Have Paris.

It is still in the unwatched pile. I haven't been in the mood for war movies for awhile.

I've been watching a lot of TV series lately so I don't see myself getting to it yet.

Battle Royale is back. It's time to return to the island and kill your friends, because the cult Japanese movie that defines twisted action and sickening violence is ready to shock you all over again.

In a world where teenagers have no respect and adults are losing control there can be only one solution: Battle Royale! Now, see what happens when you let a high school class loose on an island, arm them and then give them a simple choice... Kill your friends or have them kill you; with poison, cross-bows, machetes and dynamite. 'Beat' Takeshi Kitano (Violent Cop, Zatoichi) is a teacher pushed to the edge by his unruly charges. Kidnapped and gassed, his class wake up with exploding metal rings around their necks. If they rebel, they could lose their heads. Now they have three days and only one is permitted to survive this grisly battle to the death.

Directed by the master of 70s Yakuza thrillers Kinji Fukasaku and featuring Kill Bill star Chiaki Kuriyama, Battle Royale is the movie that helped to define extreme Asian cinema in the 21st Century.

My Review:
Ok, first of i just have to say thank you to Sam! Great recommandation yet again. This movie was a movie i didnt know about, before i got it recommanded to me, after watching 'The Hunger Games'
And i was looking forward to checking it out. The movie reminded a bit about 'The Hunger Games' but again, very different. I found the story in this movie quite interesting. And some of the scenes was just brutal and way more grapich than 'Hunger Games' This version or "original" or what i should call it, its for me by far much better than 'Hunger Games' A sick and twisted movie at times, but again a good story and it had me interested trough out the movie. A movie that i am going to watch again somtime! A movie that is simular to 'Hunger Games' but yet so different. For me, i have to recommand this movie highly to the people who enjoyed 'Hunger Games' or like a good horror movie i would say.
And the limited edition, i would say that the Extras alone is worth the money for the bluray :) Just great!

My Rating:
5/6

Glad you enjoyed it mate! The packaging is great for this. Not overdone, just good solid quality packaging.

Piffi

Yeah, loved the movie and the extras, aswell as the packaging.
Well done movieset! And i have to say that i liked "Battle Royale"
better than "Hunger Games" But after what you guys have said,
i wont get "Battle Royale 2" tho.
We'll Always Have Paris.

Achim

Didn't doubt you'd like it. Glad to see you prefer it over Hunger Games. The fact that it's brutal is key to the message. In Hunger Games that part falls a bit flat because they aimed at a lower rating, hence maximising the audience (I felt the first half was like this big crescendo working up to the first moments in the Games and then the lack of graphic violence lessened the impact immensely).

Piffi

Hehe Silence :)
And Achim i gotta agree. And i would choose the BR before THG
But that being said, i will be checking out THG 2, when that comes.
And from what i've heard about BR 2 and the trailer, i am not sure
about that one at all.
We'll Always Have Paris.

Well part of the problem with BRII was that director Kinji Fukasaku died during production so his son 'finished it off'.

Silence> an additional link between that hilarious pic and BR: Tarantino was due to play the President of the USA in BRII but after the death of Kinji, had to cancel due to scheduling conflicts.

A US remake was in the works for 2015, but rumours are that it is currently not happening. Of course, it's been on/off for years.

Good thing it didn't happen... he is an awfull director that fanboys find original because they don't know better (those who know seventies cinema know he steal everything he did in other movies) and he is even worst as an actor (even me I was more natural in the amateur short films we did 20 years ago).

samuelrichardscott

I agree about him being an awful actor, but he's a cracking director. So what if he stole ideas from other directors, as long as the films are enjoyable? Most directors do this. If anything, Tarantino has opened the eyes of many to other movies and those movies tend to get released (or get better releases) when his movies come out. For example, when Grindhouse came out, loads of new Grindhouse discs were released. When Kill Bill came out we got some new Scorpion 701 releases. When his Django film is released I bet we get some sweet editions of previous Django movies.

He's always given credit where credit is due, and I'll hold him in high regard for a long time. In fact, without Jackie Brown, I doubt I would've discovered Coffy, Foxy Brown, Truck Turner, Slaughter or my favourite - Black Mama White Mama.

Love him or hate him, he's a talented guy. Anyway, I won't turn this into another Tarantino for or against thread - we can just read the 100 or so others. :P :hysterical:

That comment is just sad :(
and I won't say what I really think of it...

Not true at all... first that film was a huge flop and deserved to be as it was an insult for those loving the cinema of seventies. Secondly, grindhouse is a generic term for the hipster crowd who don't know better. Thirdly, grindhouse isn't a genre but just the name of the independant cinemas who were located in the 42nd street at New-York. Finally, I and many fans were buying those movies a long time before that stupid insulting film was released...

Funny because I have never needed an hack to discover new genre, but what do I know? Seventies cinema is what I watch and love so I'm not a part of the dumb hipster crowd.

You say "you're not part of the dumb hipster crowd". I'm sorry, but that's quite insulting to neglect people views based on their opinions of certain things, especially when I'm in no doubt you've likely unfairly encountered reaction with your taste in adult cinema. That's like me saying you're a sex-deprived perverted virgin because you enjoy seventies adult cinema or that you have psychotic tendencies due to your love of horror (I don't think that, just giving an example back).

Sorry, I never said Grindhouse was a genre. What I meant was that the movies that played in Grindhouse theaters got loads of Grindhouse branded discs. You only need to look at the release dates of all the Grindhouse compilation discs to see which movie they coincided with. btw, Grindhouse is my least favourite movie of Tarantino's but I still found it to be fun. I see it as a tribute rather than an insult though I certainly wouldn't say anything bad about your opinion because the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing.

Also, how is it sad that I discovered a whole host of blaxploitation films after watching Jackie Brown? If anything this is a good thing. It's no different than discovering Asian cinema thanks to Battle Royale or sixties British sex comedies thanks to the Carry On films.
